you know I think more people need to be talking about the Washington Capitals and things that are coming up for them in the very near future so let me break that ice the Washington Capitals yes they have a lot of big decisions to make especially involving three key guys if not the three biggest key guys in their lineup the main three Alexander Ovechkin Niklas Backstrom and Braden Holtby not so much ovie right now but in the very near future he's going to become a big talking point now at the end of this upcoming season both Braden Holtby and Niklas Backstrom will become unrestricted free agents unless of course they signed something before that because there's nothing stopping them they can open negotiations now and discuss and negotiate a next contract Braden Holtby is without a doubt one of the best goalies in the game today if Washington were to lose Braden Holtby that would be absolutely huge Niklas Backstrom I've said it for years is arguably the most underrated player in the NHL I still classify him as one of the most underrated players in the NHL I still look at him as a franchise center he's an incredible player one of the best playmakers in the game today he deserves so so much credit for a portion of the Stanley Cup win in Washington and them just being a consistent regular season team although you know they did finally get over their playoff demons last year and a huge congrats to them and hey I'm wearing this Jersey because of it I never thought it would happen so kudos to them so contract negotiations now as of right now they have over 62 million committed to their payroll for the next year not this upcoming season but I mean the next one 2020 2021 then they have nearly 50 million committed the following year so they really need to keep that in mind when looking ahead to how they're going to try to keep these guys in their lineup now Baxter was 31 this is his final year he's making six point seven million which to me is a huge bargain considering what he brings you know you look at other players around the league at 6.7 million and you look what Backstrom does and Wow yeah that's that's a really good contract and no doubt he's one of the best centers in the game today I think between Hopi and Backstrom they have a much better shot at keeping Backstrom simply because as we know you know bow Brosky really cashed in going to the Florida Panthers and arguably the worst kept secret one of the worst kept secrets in hockey history everyone knew he was going to Florida everyone knew he was signing there but then he signs a 10 million a year now hope he can definitely look at that and his next upcoming contract negotiations you know he this is his final year he's 29 you know the rΓΆszke was 30 he signed a 10 million so the hope he's going to be 30 at the end of this contract he's making 6.1 million this year and if he's thinking hey if Bobrov ski can get 10 why can't I get 10 and if that happens Washington is in a very very tight spot indeed next year so obviously they might have to focus on shipping someone out maybe a Tom Wilson maybe a TJ oshi or maybe newly signed Carl Hagelin some have even said Demetri Orlov off the blue line now TJ Yoshi I absolutely love that guy he reminds me a little bit of well I shouldn't say that name because you know she does have some antiques to him but when he's just playing hockey and concentrating on hockey the guy's an absolute phenomenal talent he's a very stand-up individual too you know you watch his stuff in between periods or outside the arena in general if he's given interviews he's just a very genuine human being I have mad respect for TJ oh she's one of my one of my favorite hidden gems in my list of favorite players around the league now TJ oh she signed for six more years at five point seven five million that would free up some cap you know Tom Wilson five more years at five point one six six million I remember when that contract was announced I went yeah I don't really like that but Tom Wilson was a twenty goal scorer this year or perhaps Lars Eller as well four more years at 3.5 million what I'm getting at is this year Washington said you know the main guys they're all they're the whole group the whole band is together to try to go after another Stanley Cup I like their odds I like this lineup Washington looks legit going into this year and they stand just as good of a chance to win the Stanley Cup as any other team but if we look ahead to the next season that's when reality will really kick in and this is something that they're going to have to address before then so general manager Bryan McClellan has to get to work whether it's a text or typing emails or picking up the phone something has to give something has to happen now Demetri Orlov he signed for four more years at 5.5 million that's another guy that could cycle up to free up some cap if they're really determined to keep Hopi and Backstrom around or you never know maybe if Washington this year you know these guys start this season they're still on sign negotiations haven't really kicked up yet and Washington isn't looking all this and that moving forward maybe they could decide hey we want to hit free agency we want to try to really cash in here and have another opportunity to win a Stanley Cup Backstrom I see being very team-oriented I could see that guy actually taking less in order to help out the franchise that's just the type of guy he is and type of player I could see that happening from him hope he's a bit of a a wild card for me I don't know if he would purposely take less to try to hold the team together or he could be going after bobrov Snee money time will tell but regardless I see Backstrom staying over Holtby when push comes to shove now they also have a top prospect in Ilya samsonov that's something that they could you know pull out the sleeve and say well hey we have a guy here coming up maybe he could take Holtby spot maybe he'll get an actual shot this year who knows but right now the Capitals are 1.5 excuse me 1.3 almost have 1.5 1.3 million over the cap because you know they're able to carry that extra 10 percent so before opening night as of now Washington needs to shed 1.3 million so in the coming weeks the Washington Capitals are going to be active how exactly they shed that cap well that remains up to 100% speculation they could either make a trade they could either put someone on waivers they could they need to do something they need to free up 1.3 million moving forward but regardless Washington has a lot of decisions to make in the very near and fast approaching future and you know once the season kicks off and you know negotiations aren't real lise seeping through between either you know Backstrom and Hopi well you have to start to really wonder and speculate could this be the last year for Holtby or Backstrom with the Washington Capitals and then after this year old veg can goes into his final year and come on he's still the best pure goal scorer in the game today he's making nine point five three eight million and you have to think his next contract easily over ten million dollars easily regardless of his age the guy still putting the puck in the back of the net at a 50 goal per year pace yeah he's worth more than ten million dollars without a doubt so what are your guys thoughts of the Washington Capitals moving forward frankly right now I absolutely love their lineup I think they have a legit shot at making some noise and because they've won the Stanley Cup in 2018 I no longer view the Washington Capitals as that one-trick pony that's going to just completely steamrolled people in the regular season and then get bumped in the second round I look at this team as the team that has a legit shot of going deep into the playoffs once again this upcoming season that would be very exciting if they did so what do you guys thoughts on Washington moving forward you know with negotiations whether it's Backstrom or Holtby and of course you know shedding cap before the season starts this year they need to shed 1.3 million but they also need to really prepare themselves for the reality of Backstrom and Holtby becoming unrestricted free agents at the end of the year that's a big big talking point and something that's really going to heat up as the months start to start to pass by so as always everyone you can give me a follow on twitter at justin the mane 87 make sure to use promo code hands down for your first purchase at c key everyone like saving I'm not even sure the cap they need to free up this year is worth talking about. Send 2 guys down, there you are done. Just means they can't carry several extra players on the roster to start the year. As to the goaltending, if Holtby ends up wanting crazy money (which he may or may not) then the Capitals probably need to let him go. Paying a goalie 10 million seems like a recipe for disaster.

Great stuff! I think one thing that needs to be thought of too is the fact that the Seattle expansion draft is soon, and the caps won’t be able to protect two goalies. So, do they let holtby walk so
They can protect the younger prospect? Or do they risk losing the prospect by giving holtby a contract and protecting him? It’s all very interesting to see, of course I want everyone to stay as a diehard caps fan!

As a Caps fan, I personally see Backstrom and Ovi both taking hometown discounts and going forward with Ilya Samsanov to replace Holtby,. Becauseyeah, Holtby is going to be asking for Bobrovsky money, and we just cannot give Holtby that kind of money if we want to keep our core intact for the long run.

They're better off keeping Backstrom if push comes to shove. The goalie market is more fluid these days and so getting a netminder who's good enough isn't as big of a stretch. Half the time you can strike it lucky on a reclamation project. Just look at Lehner and Mrazek. These guys don't necessarily have to be hella dominant either, they've just got to be up to the task when they need to be. Binnington got St. Louis a Cup with very average numbers in the playoffs, but when they needed him to do it he rose to the occasion and could shut it down. So finding a solution in net in a post-Holby world isn't an insurmountable task.

Maybe it's petty, but I don't see them winning with Reirden. I think it was foolish and not a little tacky the way they let Trotz go, after winning their only cup. It looks bad on their club. There's enough talent there that they can just play and have a chance to win, but I don't see it happening. They still have all the big pieces on their club, but see if their 3rd and 4th line new signingings generate offence; they won't win with only 4 guys scoring. Not sure, but might miss Orpik, and Smith-Pelly was a big part of their cup win.

I love Holtby, but not for more than like 8 mil, and even that is pushing it. Caps have 2 very good goalie prospects, vitek and ilya. Gotta keep backstrom and ovi, they HAVE to retire as caps. If anything, move eller and/orlov and bring in some young kids. Great kids in Hershey.

Without Tom Wilson headhunting and breaking jaws throughout the playoffs, the Capitals would never have won, I mean stole, the Stanley Cup. They move on from him and they're done.

i could see Ovechkin's new contract being 3-4 years long at 10 million , meaning he would be a capital until he is 36 so his contact would expire a year or two after his point production declines
