and we are here with Chris bench Hitler and his beautiful van and we are going to give you guys a tour of his van it looks amazing I'll be seeing it for the first time with you guys right now and feel free to send us your questions I have a phone right here if you have any just comment in the comment section and they'll consider to ask so quick question before we hop inside are you living out of this thing full time when you start I guess building it out yeah no I wish I was but this winter I tried to live in it full-time and there was definitely a lot of times left north where we stayed at friend's house because it was very wet and soggy winner as most people know so yeah there were yeah we didn't saying it full full time but we started building it out September 1st I believe and we had some deadlines the Builder Scott Smith with Smith made he had a different he's a finished governor so he had a different house lined up so we had to have it pretty much done Wow long hours so you built this thing out and put my bass very much nice so before we hop inside I have a question about the outside this is rad you guys can see there's a picture on the outside of what looks like Mountain here there's like a van in the center of the compass did you have someone paint this how did you get this high with my friend Skywalker there's a muralist the compass was a logo I created for the series because we're doing this is a video project for GoPro called chasing adventure and it'll be like the whole whole piece based on our journey from Cardiff we met up with Rob Machado he shaved me aboard and then we went we served together then we went we were supposed that we were supposed to hit in Alaska but things changed because of crazy we made it to the yeah for sure ah so it was fun but yeah so that was my first mural I did we did not like a four by one and if you guys want to see more pictures he also has an in-stream account for your van what do you call your man the stealth evironment is stealthy marmot so check it out it's for running joke we're gonna figure out what to call it there's when I was researching bands there's tons of like gray Wolf's black bears and all these fierce predators turned into this filthy varmint nice well if you look on this side Joseph I killed Morel Junior says so this is rad so you have tons of stuff going on it looks very well built out there's like all this like carpentry like yeah there is a builder was insane everything we basically built the boat essentially it's all marine grade black because we we're gonna we saw a lot of condensation up north and just with drying our gear and drying our camera gear we had to deal with a lot of moisture and so yeah everything's waterproof and then we put a huge emphasis on having everything be EOC free which is volatile organic compounds which is like just crap it's stuff that off gasses out of chemicals and stuff so it's not a hundred percent BOC free but we did our best to have it as low as possible so Scotty the Builder researched a lot and we used like marine grade countertop epoxy on the floor and on the top and then all our paints were this is awesome yeah how do you want to start yeah I'm gonna think of where to start let's start from the back okay let's start from yes boys on the side yep so that's the board Rob shaped me which is very fun apps that political yeah so these are arcade belts which is a sponsor of mine and I checked that yeah just reuse and recycle as much as possible all this wood is reclaimed wood Scotty had from a job up in Tahoe who didn't design that bit at all this is amazing I guess I'm an artist too so I juice as an outside man this is one of my heart pieces Wow turned it into our table this is Old Man Winter and he just Oh God this is like a seating area yeah yes and so yeah he just tried to match my art pieces and did an incredible job doing that obviously so that's Old Man Winter and that was on a pair of my skis two seasons ago and yeah this is rad and then yep everything's on ambulance blocking guides so yeah seats right here yes there's two six volt batteries in here this is my portable solar F 200 watt portable panels so I don't always have to park in the Sun and then that's just additional storage and then when someone shorter or if Kimmy and I have a kid one day this is like a slack line style hammock bed that goes across Wow on both sides yeah you guys can see these these hooks on the side that are inside this like so that you're able to string in there yep and it goes through like a four-point system so it's taut you can lay across it have you guys tested it out yet I haven't yet but it was just an idea for the future yeah okay so it could be like a little like swinging like see yeah for sure okay yeah I'm in it yeah all these little pieces and those bolts in there are all climbing those are like reused cam lobes my friend was a carabiner engineer at Black Diamond so he had a bunch of old stuff so these are all climbing climbing things like beaners budget cams yep exactly behind you so here these these cords hold everything against the wall so you can still move around and be free and then these are all repurposed carabiners and this is where I hang all my Hardware whether here this diesel heater and so that's tapped into the diesel tank on the van so we would have actually climb do you ever want any she's with storage not really we try to think of everything so everyone designs their vans differently and there's so many cool concepts out there and we tried to think of skiing first and this particular project was in like a lot of cold environment so insulation was a huge part and that's why we lost some of the height we did we did a very good job insulating the whole thing too and so that was a huge focus and then storage I can take you yeah quick question before we get the storage um with the wood yep and colder and we're like humid climates do you run into issues with like because I mean you go to really moist areas and that gets like holds in a lot of moisture and a lot of people face issues with like the insulation you know getting kind of like damp or wet it's not done right yeah um do you face issues with having wood no this is the only exposed non treated wood so all that is marine gray so this is fully submerged well which is pretty cool that's what they build yachts and so everything is 100% waterproof other than the ceiling but up here is a fan so anytime I cook or if I'm drying anything I just turned the fan on and it can suck moisture out and then in addition to that yeah we used like everything is very good everything's marine grade wiring all of that stuff like condensation was a big focus and then for the insulation like you mentioned we did a what's called a vapor barrier so we did all that we did a nonworking spray foam in the wall cavities and then we did a like an inch and an inch and a half in some areas of rigid foam insulation and then Scottie and it pushes it all up and it leads into the fan and goes up yeah exactly for eating up and cooling off the constantly and you guys did this I mean there's like tons of like intricate woodworking going on there's like tons of stuff going on I was like be pretty much work from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 there we go she's waiting at that press what's your favorite thing about this van I love Scottie oh just point me in the direction to tell me what to do pretty attached to the entire thing is whole yeah but the table that he did because it was one of my so spacious so there was one thing that surprised you about being a it's like put in here before like the most peaceful was my saving grace yeah and that the theater is like a hope and we we did installed it under the seat and then there's the thermostat I would say I'm pretty proud of all of you because myself because I did like to turn myself into an election boy I ended up hiring one actually in terms of being on the road that's the one thing I'm most thankful for that I've learned just my carbon footprint in general like how much water I use how much electricity I use just on a daily basis cuz you see it all go out and I only have a twenty five gallon tanks I have to be mindful of all that stuff so that was kind of cool to just realize how wasteful I am outside know exactly how much energy exactly right and that's another good point my brother is an environmental engineer so my water system is pretty impressive it's under here yep and so this is the 25 gallon tank and then back there is a UV filtration system so I can fill up out of rivers and if I'm in sketchy cities like Mexico or something I can drink the tap water yeah so that's pretty cool and then I have an on-demand hot water heater that's water pumping yep that was pretty cool thankful my brother knew about water yeah that's crucial get it going yeah cool um let's to go at your storage yeah over here to Michael Carey thanks he says fantastic thanks Mike okay George triple wants to know if you surf Rob's twin fin I had not I should Jorge triple he is not someone bigger from the back so everything my boards and tees I took out there back in Mammoth but those go there boots go there and poles and whatever else and then I have an AC plug here for a boot dryer sounds really nice yet what about your wetsuit I know we've passed it on the way out yeah I leave it there and it drips because of those cables that suck against the drug drips right into the plastic tray oh nice yeah and then the heater jazz it's pretty nice I feel like that's kind of a main issue with a lot of people who travel out of their vehicle surface what to do with their wetsuit yep and so this drawer this was all ski here right now there's some climbing stuff in it cuz skiing is kind of over uh-huh but yeah that's where all the ski gear went and the surf gear went it's still kind of in there oh nice yeah and all these are on ambulance locking guides as well that are rated to 500 pounds so yeah you can put a lot of stuff in there nice mm-hmm so this back area is basically oh son Detroit the garage yeah yeah and then there's a shower we're after surfing this is like a six foot oh and it goes hot too yeah do you ever end issues traveling with your dog I didn't take her up north I would have I would have felt that because when we're in the backcountry for hours and hours if there's anything that you can tell people who are starting the process of like renovating their van or building it out what would you say is the most important thing to pay attention to I know there's so much to learn and so much to do I would say yeah I mean it's it's different for everyone really like I would say do your research your homework and figure out try and like way out every situation and scenario you think you'll get in and then build accordingly because you're always gonna find things you want to change stuff but that shocked me this trip actually cuz there's nothing that I really would have changed there's things I wish I had it would be nice to be able to access all the storage from inside so I didn't have to come out here or every time yeah but there's no real way to do that with that because I've those solar generators there that charge dollar camera equipment come the tables there so there's that yeah there's things that I wish I could do but there's no real change for it yeah yeah I'd say just research a lot of people out there I felt really cool man so just trying to figure out what there's a lot of lot of resources to utilize yeah cool last question for you is there any sticky situations that you run into while living out of your van either like people trying to get in or I'm lucky with that everyone so I feel like if you live in a van everyone's pretty respectful it's almost like a homeless situation you know I mean I could be completely wrong but people are just like psyched on what you're doing and I get stopped a lot because it's a pretty yeah obviously yeah so but I ran into a heater malfunction in Oregon I was camped next to my friend Austin Smith he had to be built out of fire track and was living in Mount Bachelor parking lot so I up there my heater broke and I had to diagnose it it just ended up a why I came disconnected from the fuse box but that was the stickiest situation in terms of if we didn't fix the heat we would have been yeah it was pretty cold winter so that was bad and then a few of the things like wood swells a little bit with the different climate things their hands yeah expands and changes a little bit what what we built but I really yeah and then I didn't put enough coats of paint on the on the rack so I'm gonna try no lines yeah how many a little bit about to the gallon very advanced for sure but I'd say we averaged probably like 15 yeah yeah so not an incredible but not horrible it's a it's a diesel – which is pretty nice and and if I were to take it slower up all this to grades and stuff I brought with it that better but yeah since it can handle the way it's a cargo van I drove yes well thank you very much for giving us a lower um again if you guys are just tuning in the whole thing there's some awesome stuff in there great pointers if it was difficult on your van and his band the stealthy Marmot on history of asbestos Instagram handle check it out

How well does a RWD van drive in the snow? Seems like a huge disadvantage.

Nice van! Did you use a 144 or 170, Cargo or Crew? Hope to see it in some parking lots up here in the Great White North. Pray for snow!
    Cheers!

Hey thanks for the vid. Doing a build out right now and noticed your overhead cab shelf. I've been thinking about doing one but wondering if I will regret losing head room up there. What's your experience? Recommend it wholeheartedly or only if you really need the storage? I have swivel seats already installed. We call that area the "sun room" in our build and hang out there a fair amount. Could always use more storage of course but not critical for us.
