yo guys what's up today is all about urban skaters and to be precise it's tips for urban skaters I'm gonna try and Salman knowledge and some of my best tips to help you guys get started at urban skating so we're skating today one of most important things is the skates that are on your feet obviously a for urban skating we want to use urban skates today I've used the RB range there are be 110 today sometimes I use RBI ES and sometimes I use the RB 1 tens and today I'm using the free wheel drive RB 1 tins right so now we got our skates with we got our urban skates we want to get going the first thing to get in start the skating is starting moving off from a start so let's start with that so what you want to do is once you stand up on your skates you want to stand with one leg behind like that sort of like an L shape you can either do it with your right leg or your left leg whatever is are the most comfortable and what you want to do let's put the weight into your back leg and then push off forwards and then we're rolling along and we're skating and it's the same for stopping all you want to do is then drag your foot and stop like that it's called a T stop that's probably the most easiest break you can do but to me is probably the best one to start with because it is like I said it's the easiest so let's run through that again start in L shape push off and then the same to stop that easy so now we started and we've stopped where we want to do everything in between in the middle so one of the other things you learn is turning telling is super simple all you want to do first of all respond somewhere is a bit open not too many people around and just get used to turning around on your skates moving in all different directions keeping your arms out so you can keep a lot of balance and at the same time being aware of everything that's going on looking and being aware of your surroundings there's a member we're on the streets things come out of everywhere so be aware of everything that's going on and I would recommend doing this for about an hour or so just find someone nice and just get used to cruising around and making sure that your feet stay together so when you turn to the left on the outside the inside when you turn to the right is the same but the other way I demonstrate it's a turn this way on the inside and then the other way it's the other way that makes any sense I hope you follow me right so moving on we've done starting we don't stop in we've done turning I think now we have to move on to doing a bit of jumping because obviously when you're going around the city you have to go up and down obstacles and so jumping let's find something a nice little curb to some it to jump always when I do this it's really flat so let's go this way and try and find something so we get our speed and remember you can always practice your skating around when you look at R obstacles aha perfect place so these are what I call blind man bumps these things can be a real pain when you're skating along so when you come along obviously you start going over all the bumps I think this is a perfect place to teach you a very small jump so we've jumping first of all go nice and slow so we go along but before we go along you want to make sure you've got your body position right so as you're about to jump all you want to do is bend your knees a little bit arms down and as you want to go you pop up and move your arms like that it's super simple you don't have to overdo it so to demonstrate we come along and the knees arms up and like that remember there's no height here to jump and so I don't need to jump ten foot high I need to jump this high that's one of the most important things when you're jumping is not to overdo it if you've only got to jump a certain distance okay jump a certain distance you have a little going mental and go crazy right cool so we done stopping start and turning and jumping obviously this is jumping and sank on the flat we need to find a Down jump now as well obviously when you're jumping in your land and off of something you need to compress your legs and this is what I want to show you now so you compression your legs when your land is one of the most important things if you land with straight legs you're gonna give yourself a headache you're gonna hurt your back and you're not going to be skating for the rest of the day so whenever you land anything remember make sure that you land and you bend your knees and you compress just like that it's super simple so right I found the curb at the end of this rope it's probably a good point to talk about traffic obviously traffic is dangerous we're gonna feet or English skates as I said earlier be aware of what you're doing so there's a road coming up obviously stop look both ways and then go you're not more important than a car when you're in your skates you still have to abide by the rules or the ropes so we're gonna wait for these cars to stop and in this curve just here I'm going to show you how to jump down so we can see the terrain is clear no one come in we got a green light at the traffic signals so now I'm going to do the drop down so remember same again arms out keep yourself nice and steady boom and then compress and roll away and go where you need to go let's carry on so the reason why we're doing this video today for skating as well just because it's so good to get out and skate it's a great way for transportation and stuff like that and it's just great to fill the air in your face and get out there so some of the most important things to me about urban skating safety so with safety as a whole amount of different things you can do obviously wearing your helmet your safety gear your elbow pads I'm now a great example of this today but I have been skating a very long time and I do know my limits so for me today I feel like I'm competent enough to not use safety gear one of the other things is all of us have iPhones now in the iPhone there's a helper and in the health app you can fill out all your details and if you click on the side of the iPhone I think it's five times it comes up with all the emergency details any allergies you've got emergency contact numbers and stuff like that and that can save someone's life or you could help save someone else's life what I'd like everyone to do is take a minute to look through their iPhone and just look at the health and safety or the health app and have a look at it and if you've got any comments for it below any comments for it stick it in the comments below and okay I really want everyone to know about this because I think it's a really important thing if you're out skating by yourself be into yourself you can even knock yourself out Lisa if you've done that someone finds you they can help you yeah but saying that skating is fun and generally that's just a last resort but it's something that I'd like everyone to take a moment and to look at and to reach think about this I mean safety is very important right cool on to my last and final tip how about urban skating it's terrain so there's all different types of terrains out there when you're skating you've got smooth you've got rough you've even got gravel and dirt in places and so you want to make sure that you can be able to cope with all these different terrains just like this one here in front of me and it's pretty simple what you can see is I've scissors my legs and so I put the weight I rinse my back leg or into my front leg so basically what that means if my front leg hits a stone my back leg comes polewards if my back leg hits a stone I put my weight onto my front foot it's really really simple that's a great way to get away with weird bumps bits of gravel and stuff like that so remember if you come up to a bit of terrain that you've never seen before you don't know how it's going to go scissor your legs and you'll be fine trust me I think that covers everything I want to cover today about urban skating if you've got anything else I missed out please put it in the comments below and I might do another video about it on that though guys enjoy urban skating keep safe take the necessary precautions and remember be aware of what you're doing and fill out that help app and if you've got an Android phone comment below and let me know how to do it I want everyone to talk about this guys take it easy and enjoy your urban skiing peace up you

While you are talking about safety, you are on the pavement, in the middle of traffic, talking to a camera and ignoring some pedestrian crosses with a red light. Futhermore, that youโ€™re doing is forbidden in Barcelona, where you are. Not the best tips

Speaking as a massive hipster who was worried about getting back on skates after so many years, this video is particularly encouraging. On top of this the 90s are back in fashion so time to cash in on my vintage whilst maintaining the street cred we bearded lumberjacks believe we all have. Win win.

Saftey tip: ALL cellphones have a emergency call function that lets you call 911 (or your local emergency number) even if you don't know the pin code or if it's out of cash on a pre-paid card or whatever, you can always pick up any mobile phone and call 911.
Some phones (At least my Samsung) also lets you select some numbers in your contacts list as emergency numbers that show up if someone tries to make a emergency call. So if you do that someone that finds you on the curb can use your phone to call your parents/friend without unlocking your phone.

Tips for beginners: Talking about skills that take hours to learn.

He jumps perfectly rollable bumps. He talks about jumping in a video where he has to explain how to push off. What the fuck.

This video is a joke. Whoever came up with the script is a joke. I hope it wasn't Alridge. Using such marketing friendly language when talking about the skates.

This is a horrible video for beginner. It emphasized how easy it is to do but never explain center edge, side edge, parallel turns, step turns, how to balance on T stops and parallel stop. I spent few months just from zero to be confident with hockey stops. I wish someone explains the mechanisms at the beginning phase.

I use 110s and would recommend a stop brake as well as using the T stop for urban skating – especially if there is heavy traffic and any grades

Nice tips on urban skating – I have skated Boston San Diego (wiped out on gravel ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) Dallas Cincinnati Dayton Columbus Atlanta and others – and not nearly as skilled as he is. His tip on handling different surface types ring true. Wonderful advice about safety gear – I still use wrist guards.

Good technique is important. Keep the knees well bent. If you hit a stone or a twig or something else then being low and having your knees well bent makes all the difference to staying up or hitting the deck. I also prefer a rockered setup which allows you to put the weight on your heals if the pavement slabs are uneven and you need to role over a lip which is a serious problem where I live.

Fine teachings, Dan! This clip has all one needs to get started. Glad to see I'm also starting my tutorials using the same skates ;). I know this may be a fringe question, but quite curious… how do you deal with skating in traffic? (feel like you do a lot of that off camera at least ๐Ÿ˜€

Jumping in the same video of starting and stopping? Beginners urban skating? It doesn't seem safe to give the idea that a complete beginner will be able to avoid traffic, stop at the traffic signal, make a jump down to the road, etc etc..
