in 1994 Tonya Harding was at the center of one of the worst scandals ever to touch the sport of Figure Skating but when she won the lady's title in 1991 she made a very different kind of history she was the first American woman to land a triple axel in competition and the first to earn a 6.0 for technical marriage she was second after the original program 20 years old from Portland Oregon wound up 7th in the Nationals last year and she's a very powerful skater she's tiny she reminds you somewhat of Liz Manley of Canada a little bit of Janet Linn of the United States great power great speed and great athletic ability and the question is whether three moves into the program she will do a triple axel first a triple lutz now the is whether she will become the first American to attempt and complete a triple axel jump we will know that here whether she tries it or not [Applause] has completed a triple axel in competition [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] well she's written a little history and she still has three minutes left in this routine tonya harding's she looks thrilled this is where she's really improved in her skating is holding out her moves and really feeling the music I really see a big growth in her skated in that territory taking her time and again now if she wins this phase of the competition she would win it all she would beat Yamaguchi she has the biggest smile [Applause] wonderful height wonderful stretched legs [Applause] [Applause] this number was choreographed by Barbra flowers this same lady that choreograph the Rosalind summers she's definitely armed today [Applause] well I would imagine what she did early on Peggy would have taken her confidence level to a point she's never reached before I'm sure that helps a lot [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] watch the feet she continues to have during the spin combination [Applause] and now only one remaining difficult move the double axel [Applause] death drop into a fax in spent water moment for this young lady terrific you

She was a helluva great skater! Even today…saw her on Ellen and she skated amazingly beautiful for a near 50 yr old woman! At the same time…can't help but feel like, she needed to have immediately dumped her ex husband after it was revealed that he was responsible for the attack of Kerrigan. Then the constant need to explain to the press or apologize 20+ years after the fact…justifying to the public "her role/non-role" & keeping it in the press…did her no favors in my eyes. To me that suggested a guilty complex or culpability on her part.

I watch this and can’t help but get so excited for Tonya when she lands the Triple Axel. She was one of a kind.

She had so much height in her jumps! Could also have become the first woman to land a quad with that height!

Artistically, THE WORST! But it is a moment, albeit under rotated.

She was so talented and happy in this video, it makes me cry. It is so sad that she felt that she needed to resort to violence. really sad

For just a short moment in time she was invincible. Everything else just went downhill after that.

I believe this is one of Tonya's best skating performances. Yes, she was the first American woman to do a Triple Axle. And it was a high quality Triple A, not cheated. Also, Tonya's choreographer here, Barbara Flowers understood Tonya I think and gave her choreography that did not overwhelm her, and Tonya clearly enjoyed skating the program. Sadly, Barbara died of cancer not many years agter. Everyone was behind Tonya here. It is so sad that her relationship with Jeff Gillooly and her own personality flaws, lack of willingness to train, caused her performances to go downhill and lead to the Nancy Kerrigan attack and 1994 Olympics debacle. Tonya should also have stayed with Dodi Teachman instead of going back to Diana Rawlings. Dodi held Tonya accountable and that helped her. I like Tonya but cannot excuse her many flaws. She could have been a tremendous role model for the athleticism of figure skating.

Nancy Kerrigan said that Tonya Harding didn't give her an apology… Tonya Harding doesn't need to give Nancy Kerrigan an apology… the judges need to give Tonya Harding an apology for condemning her for not being an ice princess!

Don't know what happened in 94 but Tonya was a WAY better skater than Kerrigan.

Barbara Flowers, the choreographer of this routine, died in November 1993 of cancer at the age of 45. She had fought the disease for almost 10 years.

Finally I can see the full video of the famous first 3 axel landed by Tonya Harding. The axis was bit tilted but she managed to land it. Besides the 3 axel, all her jumps were great: absurd height (by today standard), correct edge (try to count how many ladies with correct lutz edges), and technique. I am new fan of figure skating so I am not familiar with 6.0 system. I see many unaccounted elements by today point system, such as spins that ended too soon lol.

Tonya had such effortless power on her jumps and it’s truly beautiful. If the scandal had never happened I think she could have been known for so much more
