♫ One two ♫ – I feel like there’s like a glass ceiling for women, because I’ve hit it. If you skate and you rip then you should just get what you deserve, if like skateboarding is
supposed to be for everybody. If we do actually want any
form of equality or space, like, we’re gonna have to be
the ones who create that space. (electronic music) My name is Lacey Baker and I’m
a professional skateboarder. I discovered skateboarding
when I was really really young, at like two years old. I was in foster care at that time and I would watch my foster brothers skate a mini ramp, and I just
was like immediately obsessed. Like I was like I have to do this. I started competing
when I was 11 years old. When I was 22, I skated
the 2014 X Games in Austin and that’s the year I won the gold. With women in skateboarding, there’s like a subculture
within a subculture. The skate industry like just doesn’t care about women skating. It’s not equal. For example, like, there is
this skateboard contest series which didn’t used to include women in it but it just started to. However, the prize for
first place is 30 grand, and like for the guys
first place is 200 grand. I feel like it should
be equal because we work just as hard as the guys. Meow Skateboards is a
company that was created to, like, support women in skateboarding. I do my own board graphics,
like I do a lot of the other girls’ board graphics. And like, it’s rad because
it’s, like, skater owned, and it’s, like, for us,
and it’s, like, by us. So it’s like, there’s
nothing corporate about it. And it feels like that’s
how it’s supposed to be. Even if nothing comes of,
like, having a skate career or like, anything like that,
like, I still have skating. And, like, I believe in being yourself, and, like, just doing
whatever the fuck you want, and that’s what skating is supposed to be.

I mean… the reality of it is, and this is everywhere, not just skating, you get paid for what you are capable of doing, NOT how hard you try.

I think Lacey is awesome, but she is not on par with the top male skaters, none of the female skaters are. It is what it is.

The cash prize amount for the male's tournament is likely much higher because it brings in more money. If there's interest there, and it starts to generate more cash for them, the prize will increase. That's not because of the gender, that's because of business.
Not only that, but did anybody actually see the female division? Compare it to the male's division, and the quality difference in skating ability is pretty clear. That's not solely because of the gender, and you could argue it's because "skate boarding has always been male focused so less have attempted it", which sure, yeah, every business has a demographic. But regardless of that (which is irrelevant, but I'm sure it's considered by everybody against this viewpoint), if it just isn't as good, why treat it with the same level of reward the better skaters get? Bringing the lower bracket up to be on par with the higher bracket when one is clearly better than the other isn't equality. It's pandering, which is patronising, and on-par with tokenism.

I do believe there is a need for gender equality, but this is not an example of it. This is like complaining your dinner is a bit burned while your house is on fire.

Does she not understand how business economics works? Supply and demand? BMX and skateboarding are dominated by men. More boys do those sports, buy the equipment and clothing, watch it on tv, and attend the contests in person. Of course the guys will get paid more they bring in the majority of the money. Female models in the fashion industry are paid more than male models because of demand.

Women's prize:£30,000 men's £200,000…..men's contest brings in probably around a £400,000 revenue then the women's probable £100,000 no offence but it has less attention and you might try just as hard as the men but generally female skaters aren't as good as male skaters (pros) if you put the women in the men's contests they wouldn't win most won't even qualify

Holy shit, everybody calm down. Let's look at the facts.

Yes, there is clearly inequality in the skating industry. It's a male dominated sport, and men earn more money. You can't deny that. As some people have pointed out, there hasn't been much female interest in skating, and the cash prize is higher for men because the male competition brings more revenue. That is also a fact.

Lacy is frustrated with the status quo. She is actively working to change it. Nobody is saying that she can't for any reason. Why are you giving her so much hate?

This channel is not a news channel, nor is it your channel to dictate what you want to see. This is a channel about showing stories. The story today happened to be about a female skater. If you're to close-minded to just move on to the next video, then this channel is not for you. Please leave and watch something that gives you a more basic education, then work your way back up to this level.

WTF is there gendered competition in skateboarding? I don't understand why this sport would not just have open tournaments. Is this a case of "we need a separate sport for women because they never win the open tournaments", but then "why can't the women make just as much money" for competing in a smaller, starved pond? I know nothing about skateboarding, but I would have thought that this was a sport that did not directly benefit the male in a sexually dimorphic species. Am I ignorant?

I'm better than Lacy at a lot of things in skating, maybe even overall, and I'm not even sponsored. We have millllllions more to battle against to get to the pro ranks, girls barely have to bat an eyelash to get in the door. Be glad that people are even stoked on your skating and focus on progressing your skill. When girls can really challenge guys in the skills category, then they should get paid the same

If there was gender equality in skateboarding Lacey Baker would not be pro.

She's a competent and stylish skater but if she had a penis instead of a vagina she would just be the local ripper dude at your local park with some potential and maybe a shop hookup with some free shoes.

Skateboarding competitions are a spectacle of meritocracy like all sports. She could win that 200 grand instead of the 30 if she skated better than the guys. The only reason we have female contests now is to acknowledge that there is a league, based on what is between your legs that imitates a world class skateboarding tournament.

Women have always been free to enter any skateboard contest ever. That is gender equality by definition.

I met my wife skateboarding at Southbank and even though I wrote for a magazine, ran a company and had skated there for years, she, as a UCL student with a mean nollie and cool style received far more face-value acceptance from the locals than I ever did. The reason? I was clearly a bit of a tit and full of myself. Skaters are cool. Skateboarding is cool. All of the 'arguments' made in this video are illegitimate and I mean every single one.

I invite anyone, especially Lacey herself, to challenge my statements.

She used to compete in Tampa am with the guys and even qualified 13th one year (which is pretty impressive). The fact of the matter is, though, that she would likely never win or even place high enough to get a decent paycheck in the men's division and should be grateful that Street League decided to do a women's division since she's now $30,000 richer. I'm a fan of hers, but if she wants to make the same as the men she needs to get out there and market herself so she can sell some boards and shoes. The reality is that the skate industry bends over backwards to try to encourage the ladies to ride (why wouldn't they, that's half the population they could be selling to), but the ladies just don't seem that interested and, thus, the talent pool is shallower. This idea that there is some bias against women in skateboarding is ridiculous. Skating has always given the ladies their shine going all the way back to Patti Mcgee in the 60s and Peggy Oki in the 70s.

This was really inspiring to me because i go through a whole bunch of crap because im not a punk skater and dont do drugs but its like we all have what we want to do and we want to do it the way we want to like i dont give 2 craps for how other people do what they like thats just how my attitude for everything is and i know that this is a sport with thousands of different styles and girls should get so much respect just because everybody does what they want to and everyone deserves respect

People should be paid for their skill level regardless of gender or race. These gender gaps racial gaps may be good intentions but instead of forcing equal pay or equal whatever how about pushing the underrepresented group to uo their game. Before you jump on me, Im Mexican and I became a doctor not based on grades and not my gender, not my government minority programs. These equality programs dont create equality, they promote reverse discrimination, and create a victim mentality. I asked people how is a poor white kid any better off than a poor asian kid or a poor mexican kid etc. Its not a race problem, not a gender problem, its an economic problem, fix economic policies to support the middle class and you will see all groups improve.

Zero backed several female skateboarders through the years. Toy Machine also had Steamer as a pro for a bit. I believe Lacey was sponsored by Element for a period, but I could be wrong. It's true that women were not making much headway with those labels, but they got some coverage and probably made some money. Female skateboarding has improved increadibly since they began to skate with primarily other women, and Meow seems like a cool brand. Female skateboarding probably does need its own industry to survive.

Until I see some tre flip nose slides, kickflip bs noseblunts, bs tail bigflips, or ANY other legitimate tricks I feel that they do not deserve the big bucks. Random dudes got tricks at el toro. When is a single female gonna step up? They are miles behind. Damn am is waaay gnarlier than any women's contest. I'm pretty pissed that my favorite skateboarder right now (Lacey) is calling out one of the most open minded outlets ever (skating). That's cool if you want to throw a bunch of dudes but name them because I know you couldn't count them on one hand. Most guys I know love skateboarders who happen to be female. And duh – Lacey's my favorite right now! Don't throw my culture under the bus. Talk shit on football but don't try and neuter skating because of some few bad eggs.

When you're as good as the best male skateboarders you will get paid as much as they. and also innovate the business and generate millions of followers. Otherwise, shut up and you dont deserve to earn as much as them. You skate worse than male amateurs. That's reality.
