Ever since we heard that unmistakable laughter
at the end of the trailer for Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker… “Ha.” … we’ve been stunned that Emperor Palpatine
is returning for the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga. More than a few fans, however, are less stunned
than peeved. They want to know why on Earth director J.J.
Abrams and co-writer Chris Terrio would bring back a Big Bad who has supposedly been dead
for more than 30 years. Could they simply not think of any other way
to raise the stakes of the sequel’s story? What kind of narrative gymnastics will Rise
of Skywalker have to engage in to make this plot development make sense? How, exactly, can this even happen? Palpatine is a central figure in both the
original and prequel trilogies. He starts as a Sith Lord in disguise serving
as a senator in the Galactic Republic, where he engineers the rise of the Empire. He successfully turns Anakin Skywalker to
the Dark Side of the Force and nearly achieves complete dominance over the galaxy. It’s ultimately his rage at his inability
to turn Anakin’s son Luke to the Dark Side that’s his undoing. At the conclusion of Star Wars Episode VI:
Return of the Jedi, Palpatine attempts to manipulate Luke into killing his father, Anakin,
a.k.a. Darth Vader. But the plan fails. When Luke refuses to fight, Palpatine attempts
to simply kill the young Jedi, assaulting him with Force lightning as Vader watches. But Vader turns away from the Dark Side and
toward redemption. He seizes the Emperor and tosses him down
a seemingly bottomless shaft, mortally wounding himself in the process. He seemingly kills Palpatine and brings balance
to the Force. The sequel trilogy picks up 30 years after
these events, as the remnants of the Empire are reforming into the nefarious First Order
under the guidance of the Supreme Leader Snoke and his protege, Kylo Ren. Ren is Ben Skywalker, son of Han Solo and
General Leia, and a former apprentice of Luke’s. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens clearly
seems to set up Snoke as the Big Bad of the sequel trilogy, but midway through Star Wars
Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, Kylo Ren kills Snoke, leaving the trilogy without a top bad
guy. “It’s time to let old things die.” Snoke’s death was puzzling for many fans,
and was a major factor in the backlash that The Last Jedi endured from some Star Wars
fans. The tease of Palpatine’s return to the franchise
stoked the ire of these fans even further, as the move is easy to interpret as an attempt
by Abrams and company to cash in on nostalgia for the original series. After all, Palpatine has not been featured
in the sequel series up to this point, and resurrecting him could be seen as lazy writing. His return raises so many questions: does
it lessen Darth Vader’s heroic sacrifice? Are we supposed to now buy that Palpatine
has been pulling strings for all of the intervening years between the original and sequel trilogies,
and nobody has caught on? Did he actually die and return somehow, or
did he actually survive getting the heave-ho down a bottomless shaft? The degree to which one is willing to go along
with this plot wrinkle is going to depend largely on trust in Abrams. In a recent interview with Empire magazine,
the director made it known that he’s aware that some fans are confused, and he attempted
to reassure those fans that he knows what he’s doing. He said: “Some people feel like we shouldn’t revisit
the idea of Palpatine, and I completely understand that. But if you’re looking at these nine films
as one story, I don’t know many books where the last few chapters have nothing to do with
those that have come before. If you look at the first eight films, all
the set-ups of what we’re doing in [Rise of Skywalker] are there in plain view.” One thing we know is that Palpatine’s appearance
will be no mere cameo; he’s going to be instrumental to the events of Episode IX, and if a recent
leak detailing his involvement in the narrative turns out to be accurate, his return could
actually end up making a great deal more sense than it might initially seem to. “Ha,” We’ll find out the reasoning behind Palpatine’s
return and surely find out how fans feel about it when Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of
Skywalker hits the big screen December 20. Check out one of our newest videos right here! Plus, even more Looper videos about Star Wars

The sequels just need to be de-canonized and start all over again. It’s just a stupid mess at this point, cus Disney doesn’t know what they’re doing. They just want money, and failing miserably at the same time.

Um, I guess all of you "fans" haven't paid much attention to the Palpatine character. He claimed to have learned the secrets of cheating death and creating life. People can talk all they want about how this has always been Anakin's story… I call BULLSHIT! The absolute main figure… The one the entire story has revolved around has been Shev Palpatine from the get-go. He created Anakin, he orchestrated & manipulated the entire story and has generally been involved in every detail of the whole saga. Snoke is/was for the most part a red herring. Even if it turns out he was really Palpatine all along, Snoke himself was nothing. Could more be made of him in the future? Of course, but for the sake of this trilogy (so far), he's really inconsequential except in the mind of the uber-geek fan. Palpatine has been "brought back" because it actually makes sense in the context of the story. Otherwise the whole cheating death claim would have been a fairy tale. Since it has been confirmed that Palpatine did in fact create Anakin, we know his claims are true. Palpatine was never truly gone nor do I think it was ever meant that he was. George Lucas has said this himself.

So many of you so called fans have nothing better to do than hate & find fault without ever stopping to actually think. If you did, you would know that Anakin turning back to the light and killing Paplatine in RotJ DID NOT balance the Force. How is having things totally in favor of the light "balance"? Balance would be either equal numbers of both or (more properly) all Force Users drawing equally from both the light & dark sides as the original Gray Jedi (AKA "Skywalkers") did. Sorry, the Force hasn't been balanced for the past 30 years as the creator of this video states.

JJ doesn't have to retcon anything to save Star Wars from a story standpoint. The only thing he has to save Star Wars from is a bunch of whiny-ass fans who (to be perfectly honest) will never be happy with anything that isn't 40 years old.

C3PO should be the new Sith. The story started with C3PO so that makes sense. It should have been Jar Jar Binks ( He is the one who proposed the establishment of the Imperium on the Senate floor. ) but all you ' fanatics ' just hated that character so much you didn't give them time to develop Jar Jar as a villain. Jar Jar played the fool, yet he was a Padua to a Jedi Knight, he was a General who won battles, and he became a Senator and was always around when important things happened. But, fans just didn't accept that character. So, C3PO can fill in as the new ' host ' for the malevolent Sith. 😉

Ian McDiarmid already confirmed that Palpatine did 100% die in Return of the Jedi. So his return in The Rise Of Skywalker likely draws off of legends material. He comes back as a clone or via an ancient Sith artifact. I don't mind him returning if JJ believes it's necessary in order for this trilogy to have a palatable conclusion.

To make my point, I need to jump franchises for a moment. JJ Abrams is the same guy who decided that Kirk would become captain while he was a mere cadet in the academy. The same guy who practically turns Rey into a powerful jedi by the end of Force Awakens so that she can defeat Kilo Ren. An unearned victory. This means that he'll resort to any shortcut that he thinks will please…, well I don't know who he's trying to please. But, it means that he doesn't care if it makes no sense.

Honestly the Legends series did it MANY times over and it made sense due to plot points set up in all 6 of the original movies. Also everyone needs to remember Battlefront 2's story is considered canon so who is to say he did not plan this out this extensively because clones are a thing in Star Wars. Through the force Palpatine had learned how to extend life and transfer life essence. They stole alot from the Legends series they discontinued but I have a feeling its a clone.

Disney jumped the shark when they agreed to Johnson's script. I agree with everyone else who says that Johnson put Disney's Star Wars in a ditch. But I haven't watched a single video as to how Disney can make things right. You're probably already typing, "they can't." If this is true, why click on this video? JJ can't fix it, but I think he can make it a little better. It's possible. Why else would JJ agree to make TRS unless he felt like he could make it better? JJ's been very professional about Johnson's contribution, but no one's buying it.

JJ's not doing this for the money. Most people would argue that JJ's crazy for trying because he can't win. Think about what JJ's facing. Johnson killed off the antagonist, and he didn't even give us a reason to look forward to seeing Kylo become the new face of evil. It would take JJ the entire movie to reestablish Kylo as a real bad guy. Even Ray likes Kylo. Let's face it, it's too late to establish that Kylo is the most feared person in the Galaxy.

JJ has to bring back a character we already know. I understand JJ's logic for bringing Palpatine back into the mix. And as much as I hate the idea, it's not the definitive moment that destroyed this trilogy. That happened when Johnson introduced us to Jedi Mary Poppins, and all that came after. TLJ is such a dumpster fire that I can't imagine how TRS is going to do anything but disappoint. But there is that part of me that believes JJ might be creating a diversion with Palpatine. If that's the case, I just hope he has something better.

He hasn't really, I mean, compare him to Lucas who started and invented Star Wars. Or Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola? J.J. Abrams is an amateur compared to them. Just like John over at John Talks said, Chapter 7 of a book isn't generally a copy and paste of Chapter 4. On top of that you don't copy and paste elements of previous chapters in any book as it is just lazy writing. Throne Room and Hoth were a bit revisited in TLJ plain and simple. Ep. 9 is just a train wreck coming before Disney hides itself behind a paywall.

"Or is it a cash grab?". Bro, the Disney sequels ARE the cash grab, have no purpose & didn't need to be made. The original 6 are a family drama that's set in space & centers around Anakin's life, with neat character's along the way. Luke was important yeah, but he was mainly a catalyst to the bigger story. And that story ended when Anakin ultimately did bring balance (as the prophecy said) then died.

These new ones are just a meandering shitpile of nothingness & reek of corporate greed banking on nostalgia, made up of dozens of different visions instead of a singular one.

What is worst about this "new trilogy" is that they did not bring anything new to the table. It is just basically a redux with a Disney formula. Very, very disappointing. George Lucus himself even expressed disappointment to the new series. Even with Disney, I expected much better.

Should've just fuckin brought Snoke back.

    How you may ask?

If you ever watched Game of Thrones, think of Beric Dondarion. He can be brought back to life and any previous injury heals and turns into a scar or a missing eye or whatever.

Have Snoke have regenerative abilities that don't completely heal him. The power of the dark side brings him back, but leaves him scarred and misshapen.

Come on JJ and Disney. You can do better than this. It's not completely your fault JJ since Johnson left you with nothing. He wanted to make a standalone movie and ruined all the setup you made just for subverting expectations.

Now we getting Palpatine back and how does this effect the chosen one prophecy. Anakin isn't there so his turn to the light in 6 is going to mean less since Palps didn't die. Luke is also gone.

So is it Rey who will bring balance? Will Kylo turn good?

Star Wars is dead. They zombified it to make money but it’s got no soul.
The fans need to shoot it in the head no matter how painful that might be.

They should bring him back as a shadow in the toilet. Think about it. It would be a great idea.
How much scarier would it be to be at the toilet, and suddenly you can't poo?
You start to feel a force returning your poo back up?

They destroyed Luke and Han Solo, watch them destroy Leia and more characters, and it looks like it’s not enough for them, they will resurrect the Emperor and destroy his character and probably Darth Vader too, I will never understand the hate the prequels got, I liked them a lot, but oh I do understand the hate the sequels get, specially The Last Jedi!
