PROVO PEAKS ICE ARENA’S FUTURE IS UNCERTAIN. ELEVEN NEWS REPORTER KIKI SOLANO WENT TO FIND
OUT WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE POPULAR SKATING RINK. KIKI, WHY IS THE ARENA AT RISK? THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE VISIT THIS ICE RINK EVERY
YEAR. WHAT MOST OF THEM DON’T KNOW IS THE FACILITIES
FUNDING COULD BE IN JEOPARDY. THE PEAKS ARENA WAS ORIGINALLY BUILT FOR THE 2002 OLYMPICS BUT HAS SINCE BEEN PUT TO PUBLIC USE. ON ANY NIGHT LIKE THIS YOU CAN FIND THE ARENA
FULL OF UTAH COUNTY LOCALS. SOME OF THEM TELL ME THEY HAVE COME HERE FOR
YEARS. “This is the only place I’ve really ice skated in my life, and like, I’ve learned to ice skate pretty well here.” “I don’t know, we come with the young men a lot. It’s always fun to get on the ice and just bump into people
every once in a while.” THE ICE RINK WAS ONCE PRIVATELY OWNED, BUT UTAH COUNTY AND PROVO CITY MADE AN AGREEMENT TO OWN AND HELP FUND THE PEAKS ARENA. A YEAR AGO THIS MARCH UTAH COUNTY DECIDED
THEY WANTED TO TERMINATE THAT AGREEMENT. “They sent a written notice of termination
that began the process where ultimately unless something else happens it’s going to be sold.” PROVO CITY FEARS THAT THE RINK WILL NOT SUCCEED IF IT GOES TO PRIVATE SALE. “Someone may just chose to develop it for
housing or may not do a great job running it like the last private owner, and so then we
would be looking at rescuing it.” THIS WOULD BE A PARTICULAR PROBLEM FOR THE
UTAH OLYMPIC COMMITTEE WHO ARE BIDDING FOR ANOTHER OLYMPICS. UTAH IS THE ONLY PLACE IN THE WORLD THAT STILL
PUTS ALL OF THEIR OLYMPIC FACILITIES TO USE, AND THEY DON’T WANT TO CHANGE THAT. “This is a legacy from the Olympics that we don’t want to see go by the wayside without a good fight.” PROVO CITY HAS MADE STEPS TO INCREASE REVENUE
FOR THE ARENA. THERE IS NOW INDOOR SOCCER, HOCKEY, EXERCISE CLASSES, AS WELL AS ICE SKATING THIS IS THE ONLY FACILITY WITH ALL THESE ACTIVITIES IN UTAH COUNTY. “I have friends that come here and play/have soccer practice and they really need it because there’s no indoor facilities no where else.” THE DEPUTY MAYOR TOLD ME IT IS A HOPE FOR THE ARENA TO EVENTUALLY BE FINANCIALLY SELF SUSTAINED. UTAH COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AND PROVO CITY CONTINUE TO MEET IN AN EFFORT TO FIND A RESOLUTION FOR PEAKS ARENA. PROVO CITY MAYOR’S OFFICE SAYS PRESERVING
THE PEAKS ARENA IS A TOP PRIORITY FOR THEM. REPORTING IN PROVO, KIKI SOLANO, ELEVEN NEWS. “We love Peaks Ice Arena!” (cheering)
