blackjack expert Henry Tamburin who is the publisher of the Blackjack
Insider newsletter as well as the author of seven books on casino gambling gives details on the five most misplayed
hands in a game of blackjack and now here’s Henry Tamburin The number five most misplayed hand in blackjack is a pair of nines against a nine. It
seems logical to split nines when the dealer has a small card
but most players have a hard time understanding why they should split nines against
a dealer nine if you have an 18 and the dealer has a nine upcard you’re gonna win 8 out of 20
hands if instead you split those nines each of those nines are gonna win nine-and-a-half hands on average for every 20 hands so you’re gonna win one
and a half more times when you split your own nines against the
dealer nine rather than standing So when you’ve got
that pair of nines against a nine you should always split them the number four most misplayed hand in
blackjack is when you’re dealt a 12 and the dealer
shows a 3 There’s a rule in blackjack when you
have a stiff hand and the dealer has a weak up card in general you shouldn’t hit you should stand but in the case of a 12
against the three you really have to take a look at the
percentages If you look at your 12 there are only four cards that could
bust you and that’s the 10 the jack the Queen and
the king there are a total of five cards that
will get you into the 17 to 21 safe zone so there are more cards
that will get you into a safe 17 to 21 than will bust you the other reason why you should hit your12 against the three is that the three is not such a weak card for a
dealer as you would expect If you compare the
chance of a dealer busting with a 3 up card compared to 4, 5 or 6 he’s got less chance of busting with a 3 so therefore when you have a 12 against
a three your best percentage play is to always hit
that hand the number three most misplayed hand in
blackjack is a 16 against a dealers 10 and there’s
no question that when you’re dealt a 16 and the dealer has a 10 that that is
really a bad hand no matter what you do you’re in a losing
situation but the most cost-effective play that
you can make with that hand assuming you don’t have a pair of 8s now we’re only talking about hard 16 against
the dealer time your most cost-effective play is to surrender when you surrender your
hard 16 you’re gonna lose 50 percent of your
bet now why would you give up fifty percent of your money
without a fight Most players really don’t like to surrender because they
feel that you know you’re waving the white flag
and you just given in half your money to the casino well the fact of the matter is if you
don’t surrender then the other playing options the
probability of you losing is going to be slightly greater
than 50 percent so obviously it’s much better to lose fifty percent
of your money by surrendering versus standing or hitting and losing
slightly more than fifty percent so the best play to make with the hard
16 against the ten is to surrender now what if the casino doesn’t
offer the surrender rule now your fallback position is to hit your
16 you lose slightly less compared to
standing but there’s one exception to that rule
and that is if you’re 16 consists of three or more cards for example suppose you’re dealt a 7 a 5, and a 4 you have a hard 16 but you’ve got
three cards and you’ve got some small cards in that hand because you’ve got some small cards the
odds shift slightly from hitting that hand to standing Why? Because you’ve removed some of those
small cards from the deck and if you were to hit that
hand the fact that you removed some of the
small cards that you would like to have that fact shifts the odds slightly from
hitting to standing So the bottom line with the hard 16
against the ten is you should always surrender if that’s all not available then you
should hit and if you have a three-card three or
more card 16 then you should always stand The number two most
misplayed hand in blackjack is a soft 18 against the dealer’s nine or 10 Most players believe that when
they have an eighteen that’s a strong hand and they shouldn’t
mess with it they should always stand Well think
about this if the casino gave you an 18 on every
one of your hands for the rest of your life you would die
a loser in blackjack an 18 as just not good enough so when you have a soft 18 that’s an eighteen with an
ace counted as an 11 you have an out and that out is to hit so if we look at some
percentages with a soft 18 just against the dealers
9 I’ll show you what I mean if you stand
on that soft 18 against the dealers 9 you’re gonna
win 8 out of twenty hands if instead you
hit the soft 18 until you either get the
soft nineteen hard 17 or you bust you’re gonna win 9 out of twenty hands so you’re gonna win one more hand out of
every 20 when you hit soft 18 against the nine versus standing So the best play when
you have a soft 18 and the dealer shows a 9 or a 10 is you should always take a hit The number one misplayed hand in blackjack is when you’re dealt a pair of eights against a dealer 10 I see this hand misplayed more
often than all other hands Why? because a player feels that the
dealer has a strong up card they’re already in a losing situation
when they have a pair of eights and now they’re afraid to split them
because they’re afraid they’re gonna lose to bets instead of one and it’s true that the 16 against 10 is the worst hand you
could have in blackjack you’re only gonna win 23 percent of the
time however when your 16 consists of a
pair of eights you have an out and that out is to split the
eights because when you split the eights you’re
starting a hand with an 8 and your chance of winning when you
start with an 8 against the dealers 10 is 38% so you’re increasing your
chances of winning from 23 percent up to 38 percent therefore you should always split your
eights against the dealers ten If you want to learn more about me and

Splitting 8's against a dealer's 10: I understand you improve from 23% to 38%, however, you are risking twice the money at still a sub-optimal percentage. On any given bank roll not sure it makes sense to increase your variance and possibly risk going bankrupt for the night versus praying for mercy and even if you are smote on that hand, living to see another day with that extra bet instead of splitting and doubling your bet. But that just me.

You don't know if the odds changed because you got a few small cards unless you know what the running count is. what if the count is like -10 you get 3 small cards it's still -7 there is still a ton of small cards to come. That's silly.

I think standing on a three-card 16 is only effective if either you’re playing with one deck or you’re counting cards and you know you’ve got a positive count.

You see more hoodies, irresponsible idiots, and Africans in these facilities than any other types. Why? Lost their jobs, borrow loans, homes, controlled substances seized, or money stolen from their families purses. They're in these places like it's an occupation, or steady reliable income. They NEED to win. Seeing it in those aspects gets you exposed negatively all over social media with a mugshot. It's only intended to present as a once-in-a while leisure activity. NOT a line of employment. Lots won't get it, can be worse than a smoking addiction, and hate when one day it comes down to hanging theirselves being fools. If you're that depressed, it's best if you don't ever start playing at first.

My nightmare hand is 7-7. I assume I'd wanna split them against a Dealer 7-or-below — but what if doubling-after-splitting isn't allowed? Is there ANY case where you'd stand with 7-7?

Actually the worst hand is a 16 against a dealer ace, lose about 75% of the time. Also I would not split 9s against a dealer 8 or higher. Too likely you lose 2 bets instead of winning 1.

I find that when split 9's against the dealers crap, some douchebag on the table is going to curse your family for costing them a hand. For example last week at Sands, dealer has a 6 and I have 9's. I split the 9's and pulled a King and a jack for 2 19's. The old crunt sitting next to me has an 11 and doubles, pulling a 4. Other players standing on good cards. Dealer flips up his down card showing an 2. Hits for 9 for a hard 17. Now she says I'm a greedy bastard for splitting my 9's and taking the King away from the old crunt who have doubled to a 21 instead of losing with a 15. When I asked the hag how she would played my hand, she grunted out she would have had respect for the other players at the table before making a selfish decision. When the drink gal came around, I asked to bring the hag a glass of prune juice to help loosen her up a bit jejejejejejej.

We all know this is staged . Yes most likely there is a 10 in the hole. But when it’s a 16 Ima just stay. Because most of the time (From my experience) sometimes there is a low card below the Face card. And you came to gamble. Scared money don’t make money.

People keep arguing about splitting 8s against 10 is bad idea. How about just follow the basic strategy where it say always splits 8s and Aces? If you don't follow basic strategy you might as well just accept the fact that you gonna lose more $ in the long run. Against math and simulation is basically against yourself.

The most misplayed hand is placing a bet on BJ. The most unfair game in the casino. If both the player and dealer busts, the player loses. They let you have the chance to bust first. That’s why there are more BJ tables than any other in all casinos.

This is not gambling. Gambling infers (?) that you have a chance at winning (i.e. 50/50) but this is "gaming", i.e. giving the casinos all your money, sometimes faster than other times. Just for a bunch of degenerate losers, who would be much better served putting that money back into your family or giving to charity than supporting multi-billion dollar corporations that regularly fleece the dim-witted. Just sayin'…

I was intrigued by the pair of 8's against a 10 showing. If you play them you win 23% of the time, if you split (double your risk) you can win 38% of the time. Double your risk for an extra 15% ? I also like the discussion about the 2 vs a 3, what about the other way, a 3 vs a 2?

Re casinos……Guaranteed way to lose and have a frown as you lose is to stay too long .

If you're up any amount that rings your bell, leave and leave gambling for the whole day. (Read all, to see my BIG tip!)

Enjoy your life, doing tourist stuff, sexxxy stuff or if you're not on vaca' just get the wash done, the car washed, or take the kids to a movie,

    ballgame or swimming.

Budget! Plan ahead and only take and spend your

DAILY, WRITTEN IN STONE, LIMIT !

Forget borrowing from a friend or spouse or ATM.

EXPERTISE at your game counts,, use a bit of brains and don't play stupidly making childish moves, in craps, or card games.

Roulette, commonly thought to be a dumb game to play, is one of the best smartest games to play if you are PATIENT!!

–Formerly hot numbers, stop hitting and cold numbers ALWAYS heat up, because over a day or two all numbers will hit evenly!

So watch carefully over 2-5 hours and then strike !!

Perhaps the numbers 4-6 and 9 have been cold and are starting to hit a few times.

PUT YOUR MONEY ON THE 2 STREETS 456, 789 with a small wager you cover 9 numbers, nine SOON TO BE HOT numbers.

ANOTHER THING TO WATCH IS JUST the % of BLACK or RED, hitting .

    — If black has hit 20/25 spins you don't have to be a genius to know to put small bets ON RED.

His number one misplayed hand is wrong. If you follow his rules you will lose more and it’s simple math if his percentages are right. He says u win 28% if you don’t split but 38% if you do split. Well that’s is not enough to minimize your losses and if you split you loss more. Figure out the math for a 100 hands you will lose 400 dollars more by splitting every 100 hands. Simple math so don’t follow his rules

Your logic on that last one is soooo very flawed. Maybe your best odds of winning that specific hand are better if you split, but the best use of your money would be to wait until the next hand to bet it. After all, the odds are about 51/49 in the house's favor from a blank slate, whereas if you split those 8's you're only going to win 35% of the time.

I don’t get it. It’s only the odds when you win. Like you said in mistake 4 if you split the 9s in mistake 5 what are the odds of you getting 2 face cards and what are the odds that the dealer would have a lower card. Splitting 8s against a 10/face card? It’s like more chances of winning or losing a lot more than you wanted. When you play with other people blackjacks becomes teamwork. Everyone has to work together to beat the dealer. Save them cards and don’t make stupid hits

I just started playing blackjack 4 months ago and it was good learning the basic. It made me understand how the game go. So every time I play basic, I would leave the casino empty handed. Month ago I started playing without that basic shiet I start leaving the casino with winning between 100 to 300 on $5 table and only had 20 to 40 buck to start with. Now I'm learning other ppl on the table start throwing fits when they see me playing even the dealer don't like how I play, but I'll be the only one on the table that are mostly winning against the dealer and the only one with more chips and only started with 20 to 40 bucks. I don't fucking get it with these ppl. Their problem is that they are assuming what cards that are coming up.freaking looser lol. Now if I want to play blackjack I would go early in the morning when the table just open up. Then I'll woop that dealers ass all day until other looser start playing next to me baaaaaaaahahahaha

Mostly luck, but, remember one thing, no matter what u have, if u bust, it makes NO difference what dealer has, I am firm believer in letting dealer win or lose even if you have 12 showing. Always split, always double down or house will eventually take your money. Your not in game if dealer already took your cards. Players always feel dealer has better hand, the house banks on it.

I understand you’re saying going from 23% to 38% is obviously a good move, but it does make you double your bet and would this not make your possibility to lose more money bigger? (for example) you will have a 77% chance to lose your 10$, and if you split it you will have a 62% of losing your 20$. Wouldn’t you rather take the 23% and play the next hand with a fair odd?

Re casinos……Guaranteed ways to lose and have a frown as you lose 1. stay too long 2. get addicted to slots.

If you're up any amount that rings your bell, leave and leave gambling for the whole day.

(Read all to the bottom to see my BIG tip! 😍🙄😘😍😉👍🏽‼️👍🏽👍🏽But don't play slots: AmericanCasino Guide has videos 'TOP TEN MISTAKES , AND TOP 5 Slot Machine errors '. They are too fast paced and sneaky …Not fun and guaranteed to take all your $$💰💰💰…..

So; leave if you're ahead–😉💋 👔💍👛🍛🍻🍟🍔 You've had your fun, why spoil it!!

But I know it's hard to remember the correct rules, strategies and even ( in poker ) different player types and body language stories. Why not try this stress free, non competitive fun game that requires only a little bit of patience??

Roulette, commonly thought to be a dumb game to play, is one of the best smartest games to play if you are PATIENT!!

–Formerly hot numbers, ALWAYS stop hitting and cold numbers ALWAYS heat up, because over a day or two all numbers will hit evenly all around the wheel!!

So watch carefully and note the 'hits ' for 2 hours before supper, then go eat , and note them again and get a read on which formerly cold numbers are now heating up a little………and then strike !!

Perhaps the numbers 4-6 and 9 have been cold and are starting to hit a few times.

PUT YOUR MONEY ON THE 2 STREETS 456 and 789
With a small wager you cover 6 numbers, six SOON TO BE HOT numbers, we hope.

    Edit!!

This is a month later and here's an important addition!!
Once you have chosen the warming numbers , those 6, in a bunch , it's vitally important to bet small SMALL and be very patient with them . You can't expect them to win immediately!!
Keep betting them for a minimum of 12 spins and see if the ball hits or comes next to your numbers. Close is good!!
It shows you your numbers will be hitting soon…… End of edit..

ANOTHER THING TO WATCH IS JUST the % of BLACK or RED, hitting .

    — If black has hit and hit & hit 20/25 spins you don't have to be a genius to know to put bets ON RED. ( tho the bet is bigger than on inside numbers ☔️👎🏽)

Use this slow patient strategy to have fun and maybe win a few bucks IN THE LONG RUN!!

House edge is 51% if basic is played correctly. However in a few of these examples, splitting and buying a 2nd hand and still having negative equity. 1 bet x 26% equity or 2 bets x 38% equity. $10 with 26% equity, you lose $7.40 long-term. $20 with 38% equity you lose $12.40 long term on that same hand. The 8's have a 1/13 chance to peel a 3 where you can double down with about +2% equity so that also seems insignificant. Am I missing something, is my math flawed, because based on my analysis splitting 8's seems incorrect. Obviously it's been standard for ages so if someone has the insight that proves my math wrong have at it

So 18 is bad so split your 88 and get 18 twice? OK

I like the experts video as far as explaining some of the finer points of basic strategy. However, this is ONLY basic strategy. This gentleman is probably an experienced counter but the casinos have no problem with players playing basic strategy. Hell, I've had dealers tell other players what they should do on a particular hand! That being said, it looks like the vast majority of commentators have no experience with counting. I use (2-6) – (10-A) & keep running counts of aces (see if you can find Julian Braun's book). No matter the number of decks, you only have to track two numbers & do quick division in you head regarding the number of decks already played. (People who understand counting know exactly what I'm saying). In the video, 3 (or 4)-card 16's are a bit simplified to switch from hit to stand. This strategy change should only happen when the true count is (at least!) +3 or higher. Also, this particular strategy change is the single closest switch there is (however, keep in mind, you're going to LOSE the majority of these hands). Counting a deck (or any number of desks) is actually relatively easy. It does take practice & you learn to count cards in groups but it not that hard. It's the strategy changes that happen at different true counts that are difficult to remember. By the way, the 2nd closest call is probably the hard 12 vs. 3. This switch from hit to stand should probably be at +4 (or even +5) before it's shows a (slightly) lower probability pf losing.

Just realized I had a few typos… i.e. (or any number of decks) – before it shows – probability of losing. It's late…

Stay on a 3 card 16 against dealer 10? First time I’ve heard that, I thought in that case you hit to 17…have I been wrong all these years?

On the BS table there is a choice that I cannot quite understand. It's Double A8 against 6. Can anyone explain to me this? Thanks:)

With 9 9 hand v a dealer 8 the BS chart tells you to split .I must admit why would you risk losing double your bet when if you stand and the dealer pulls a 10 you will push .I know the object is to try and beat the casino using BS but this is one hand that always baffles me

My question/issue is when you split or double down anything, you increase the bet. If you see the dealer has a favorable (for the dealer) up card such as 9,10,J,Q,K,A, why do that? Yes, I understand you "increase" your odds a little bit but you are risking more for still a "favorable" chance to lose. To me, it is tough to sit on 99 with a dealer up 9, but at least I am not doubling my bet just to increase my chances by 7.5%. My strategy is that splitting/doubling down is an opportunity to get more money in when it now appears the player has more favorable odds.
