Hey what’s up! This is Tim with Tactics, and I’m here to help you choose the best size skateboard wheels for you. Skateboard wheels come in many different shapes and sizes and there’s a couple different wheel dimensions that will affect how the wheel skates. The most important is diameter. This is the dimension used to indicate the wheel size. Smaller wheels from around 50 to 54 millimeters are lighter and more responsive which is good for flip tricks and technical skating. Bigger wheels from around 55 to 60 millimeters are heavier but they help you keep your speed and handle rough pavement better than small wheels. This makes bigger wheels great
for transition skating and transportation. If you’re skating wheels
that are larger than 56 millimeters we recommend throwing some risers on your board to get some extra wheel bite clearance. Wheel bite is when your wheels
rub against the underside of your deck causing your wheels to stop while you
fly off your board onto the ground. The next important dimension is contact
patch sometimes called riding surface. This is the part of the wheel that
actually rolls on the ground. In general, the wider the contact patch the more grip you will have on the ground and the narrower the contact patch the less grip you will have. So if you are wanting to do technical tricks that pivot or slide on a rail or ledge a smaller contact patch will make these just a little easier. If you’re wanting something stable that won’t slide out when you don’t want it to look for a wheel with a wider contact patch. The shape or profile of a wheel can also have certain benefits for your skating. Wheels with a rounder lip will help you roll over coping and wheels that are flat on the sides are better for locking into grinds. These aren’t rules that are set in
stone, they’re just some guidelines to help you get started. Experiment with different wheel sizes and shapes to find out what works best for your skating. If you got any questions at all leave
them in the box below, or just give us a call and we’ll help you get the answers you need.
