but I also think there's another position that I don't think is getting focused on enough and it's the backup goaltender it's a it's an issue with this team now they've signed they've eto apparently a PTO for Michael Moyer who at times when he's been healthy is put up decent numbers as a backup he's never gonna give you a lot of games but if you look at his career a couple years ago he had good numbers like 32 starts from Philly mm-hmm but they are desperate at that position and I don't mind s they're approaching this the backup position like okay you'd love to go get Keith Kincaid like I don't think that's good but Brian Elliot or something like more known commodity yes but they probably can't afford 2.3 million dollars in their back up whatever Brian Elliott signed for your cam Talbot whoever might have been so there they're going to strengthen numbers like we're gonna have a lot of options and we're hoping that one of them works out right they got Hydra sent on a one-way deal but they can put him in the minors not gonna hurt them yes parks I think I don't want to ideal as well yeah put him in the minors not gonna hurt them yeah and nor Verdun on a PTO he'll sign for a contract they can also put in the minors it's not gonna hurt them III think given their alternatives it's not a bad idea because they don't have the flexibility to go get something else but I wish you know again you can only get so much right and it's it's a finite number and it's a hard salary cap but for me with the way the league is trending I expected more of an emphasis on this position mm-hmm and clearly they're reaching like that's what they're doing they're reaching they're hoping no worth Choza III gotta believe no worth is probably in the driver's seat for that backup role if he's healthy and he has a good training camp cuz I don't think Garrett sparks is a part of the future how do you tell this guy to pack his bags and leave the team at the end of the year and then genuinely believe that he can be a part of your team please go away let me playoffs here there's no way please just take not that you're not playing you're out just don't be around like there's another ring that's another that's another level altogether dude now they're not you've gone not only from a healthy scratch to a black ace to whatever is below to whatever that is you don't exist you don't exist we moving your gear out of the room in hutch had a kid and we got a guy going through a life situation Papa's happening but we're still willing to roll the dice right so I don't see Garrett's parts I don't care what they say between now and opening night I changed quickly eh what do you hear I mean I can get past them choosing sparks for McIlhenny we've had this conversation before Mack Elena's had a great little resurgence late in his career I didn't see it coming I understand why they wouldn't sparks MVP of the playoffs when all that stopped he was the guy he was supposed to be almost the heir apparent let alone the backup I think that was the hope yeah but certainly that it was an NHL goalie and he's gonna be a backup and he'd be a good one at that and eight months later he was asked to leave the team in the middle of a playoff shocking King that's a quick turnaround quick turnaround now again and I'm hopeful that it was just he was struggling with his game and nothing else because remember what he said in Ottawa like that was the beginning of the end remember he came out and said we got to give it more effort and if we're gonna play like this and it was like as a as a player rookie baoli you've got like what yeah like you're telling how about you how about you and your 880 to save percentage worry about stopping the puck exactly and less worrying about more commitment and more with guys in that room like Patrick Marleau Ron haensi John Tavares member that cop you're telling those guys that's a tough one it's chew on and I think it fell off pretty quickly after that I don't think it was a coincidence now again maybe he's reformed this game maybe he's gonna have a different approach I don't know but I find it hard to believe you can get to a nuclear option which is what they talk which it was and then all of a sudden you like now he's in the running so I don't consider sparks in the work michael hutchison for me is not an everyday backup in the league I just don't see it I think he's somewhere between the H on the any choice of good number three but if it gets to a point where Freddie Anderson has to play 63 65 games that have that that cannot happen it like we've been down this road before and your team should be good enough that he shouldn't have to it's not like you're grinding over points and we need him to play schedule game off because we need to make the playoffs right your team should be good enough that that should not be part of the decision-making process for him next year it shouldn't no vert and that's what this is what you do when you're a guy doesn't have a contract right you scour the league where the holes who's gonna ask someone who's not capable to filling that hole of doing it and that's where I'm going for a try oh yeah so so great I'm a scoring winger I'm gonna check out Edmonton swingers were like you know what I think I can outplay chase on yep I think you know play pool ERV whatever it might be and I'm going there that's and that's what Norma is doing right now he's walking he's like I see the contracts I see the financial flexibility of burying one-way deals because the team is wealthy I'm taking that shot yep no it's it makes sense it's a smart play like listen I I don't like the bind that the Leafs are in but the position they're in this is the smart play no worth is a legitimate and each other he's a backup and he knows it yeah he's not coming in thinking no I want Freddy's job that's not gonna happen yeah and when he's been healthy he's actually put up some decent numbers as a backup you don't need the world from your backup no one's expecting that but you might need 10 starts in a row might need 25 games or you might need three weeks where you're playing a groin was Freddy's hurt you can't play you gotta play eight of nine right and it's not about necessarily the Leafs making the playoffs it's again home ice against Boston how about you switch it up for the first time in three years how about you actually hold on to that lead late into the season and not throw it away or you have a backup who offers you as you know 550 600 win percentage yeah on a good team on a good team and that's the difference and instead of starting on the road you start at home you know like that because it's it's incremental improvements they're not gonna blow past the Bruins of the Lightning it's not gonna happen you try to chip away they put your shelf look better a slightly better spot they've been in a good spot yes hey we're on home ice to win the series you

Should there be greater concern about the Leafs' backup goalie position?

Both the backup and starter are issues. Andersen is way overrated imo.

DUBAS IS TOO YOUNG TO KNOW WHAT IS BEST FOR THEM HIS FRIENDS THE PLAYERS ARE SCHOOLING HIM ON THESE BIG CONTRACTS.

THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN IF LUO OR BILL WATERS IS GM…

DUBAS 1ST MISTAKE WAS SAYING WE WILL GET THEM ALL SIGNED. WHEN SURE THEY MAY ALL SIGN BUT THEY ARE HOLDING OUT OR HIGHLY OVERPAID.

I'm not sticking up for sparks, but the leafs ask a way to much of any goalie. They have no system, no structure, no player on the ice plays defense. No matter whose in net, their hung out to dry. That being said, it worked for the Oilers in the 80's. However I don't see Coffee, kuri, messier, Gretzky, Lowe, Anderson, Moog etc playing on this team. That team also had balls and wasn't afraid to stick up for themselves or team mates.

In my opinion Leafs just made a big mistake. Even though I am Czech I have to say that when Neuvirth speaks he's so naive and unrealistic. He's been very inconsistent and injured all the time last seasons, however he still talks shit about becoming no. 1 and playing over 50 games per season. They should have kicked his butt out right away. Well, for me Hutchinson is definitely winner of backup position over Neuvirth.

Sparks was horrible at backup last year. Not worth stressing about this year. Marmer needs to get signed … and then leafs win cup in June.

I remember when sparks called out his team members against Ottawa. He was right. So what he isn’t a super star. He has freedom of speech. Not everything is about rank. This isn’t the military.

Look at Tuukka Rask and Jordan binnington through the playoffs. They each did so well because of the amount of games they were playing. The backup goalie should be able to at least start in 30 games. It’s important to not over work your starting goalie like what I believe Vegas did with fleury. Obviously Jb didn’t start playing till January but you get the point. You need that starting goalie hot come playoff time and a big part is having a great backup. People always seem to forget that it’s a good thing when you have a great backup. Halak and Rask challenged each other, which i think is a good thing.

Neuvirth has been at starter quality in the past. He just needs to be healthy. And Sparks needed to go reset. Go get better, get confidence. He's not the option, but when he is performing THAT bad, you sometimes need to leave and get on a grind

They have no money to waste. Ideally a solid back up would be nice. So would keeping solid NHLers and first round picks. They just blew a bunch of guys and picks out of town because they have no room. Young guys are overpaid. Nylander is not a star, just a player. Matthews is good but not top shelf, Marner, good but wants Matthews money. Dubas has spoon fed these kids. No Cups but at least you can watch Taveres and Matthews and Marner for years to come. Just like the Leafs in the 70's, lots of good players, just not a good team.

Rask and Bennington got stronger and stronger as the playoffs went on. No coincidence they had what amounted to load management during the season. About 50 games played I believe. If you can get 30 from your backup that really sets up your starter for playoff success.

As a Flyers fan… Neuvy is a tough option. He's good enough to where you keep taking chances on him. But if he can't play because of injury, he can't play. His injuries really put us in a bind last year. Hoping for the best for him… but I'm glad the Flyers didn't keep trying something that clearly wasn't working out.
