Hi everybody! Today at Marcel’s Hockey School we’ll be practicing some backwards starts! Last year I showed you how to skate backwards without practicing the start, and now I’ll show you how to get going really fast from a dead start! Let’s start right away: the backwards start begins standing sideways I’m standing sideways to the direction I want to go, I’m in a crouch, I push off with the leg that’s furthest away from the driection I want to go. my leg makes a half-circle behind me, and then I have to cross under wit my other leg. It’s difficult to demonstrate slowly, so I’ll show you how it looks when done a bit faster: Push off, cross under. We want to, if possible, only do one crossover, if you push with good power, you can generate good speed and you won’t have to crossover in the other direction wiggle your butt all over, and you can get going quickly in a straight line. One more time: big push off, cross under! and then I’m already skating backwards! When you do it quickly, it looks like this: as you can see, I can get going very quickly this way. Now I’ll show you how it looks from the side: So, side view: In a crouch, push off with this leg (right) because I want to go in that direction (left) and cross under. The leg comes behind me, cross under. A bit faster: And I’m already going with quite a bit of speed! Two very common mistakes with the backward start: Mistake number one: I don’t go back with my first leg, and cross under, Instead, it goes forwards: It then looks like this: I have seen some powerskating coaches practice this lately, but I find you can get more speed going with a good push off and cross under Also, it’s simply smoother, this here looks really rough, and you have to crossover twice before you even get skating backwards. so want want to avoid this front crossover. I can also lose my balance easier when starting like this. The second mistake that often happens, is that the players get a good push off with their first leg but then the back leg doesn’t do anything. Always think: push-off, cross under! Push-off, cross under! Without that cross under, you only have this: I am in motion, but not with the speed that I want to have. So that second motion, the cross under, is super important. really grab the ice with the front part of your blade with that second leg, so that you get that speed going! When you’re a smaller player, with maybe not so much power, or you’ve just started practicing this, then it’s ok to crossover twice. It would then look like this: The goal is though to get down to one start, only one crossover, and that we don’t do this all the way down the ice: We want to, whenever possible, move from Point A to Point B in a stragiht line. so one crossover is a good way to achieve this!
