DAN: TWO TEENAGE FIGURE SKATERS FROM PORTLAND ARE COMPETING AT THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS THIS MONTH, AND THEY’RE DOING IT ON WHEELS. JENNIFER: IT’S THE ROLLER SKATING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN FRANCE. OUR AMY FRAZIER CAUGHT UP WITH THE SKATERS AT OAKS PARK BEFORE THEY LEFT. AMY: IT’S LIKE ICE DANCE ON ROLLER SKATES. AT THE OLYMPICS YOU SEE THE I SKATERS DOING ICE DANCE THERE. WE DO THE SAME THING JUST ON ROLLER SKATES. AMY: 16-YEAR-OLD DAVID HAMBLIN AND 15-YEAR-OLD ANNIE MACKAY ARE BEST FRIENDS AND COUSINS. THEY’VE BEEN SKATING AT OAKS PARK FOR AS LONG AS THEY CAN REMEMBER. DAVID’S MOM WAS A COACH HERE. WE JUST KIND OF RAN AROUND HERE WHEN WE WERE LITTLE, WE PUT ON OUR FIRST PAIR OF SKATES AND BOTH OF US JUST KIND PF FELL IN LOVE WITH IT. AMY: IT’S BEEN A LOT OF HARD WORK, BUT THEIR TALENT AND DEDICATION HAS LANDED THEM A SPOT AT THE ROLLER SKATING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN FRANCE, IN THE DANCE COMPETITION. I ACTUALLY SKATE BETTER IF I’M NOT THINKING ABOUT MY FEET OR WHAT I AM DOING AT ALL. IF I FOCUS MORE ON THE MUSIC, THEN I DO BETTER. I’M MORE NATURAL ON MY SKATES THEN I AM WALKING. MOST OF THE TIME I’M CLUMSY OFF SKATES. I TRIP ON MY FEET LESS WHEN I HAVE WHEELS. [LAUGHTER] AMY: THE SKATERS SAY THEIR SPECIAL BOND AND CLOSENESS, GIVES THEM AN EDGE IN COMPETITION. IT HELPS US HAVE THIS BETTER CONNECTION ON THE FLOOR. IT’S GOTTEN TO THE POINT WHERE IT’S BEEN LONG ENOUGH AND WE’RE CLOSE ENOUGH INDIVIDUALLY, EVEN JUST OUTSIDE OF SKATING WHERE I DON’T HAVE TO ASK HIM, WHERE ARE YOU, OR WHAT IS YOUR ARM DOING? I JUST AUTOMATICALLY KNOW. AMY: THEIR GOAL NOW, TO MAKE TEAM USA AND THE COUNTRY PROUD. THIS IS AS HIGH AS IT GETS
