Pete the cat put on his
favorite shirt with four big, colorful, round, groovy buttons. [MUSIC] Aah, no, one of the buttons popped off and
rolled away. Did Pete cry?
>>Goodness no.>>Buttons come and buttons go. He kept on singing his song. [MUSIC] But do we cry? Goodness, no.
>>We keep on singing. [MUSIC]

My cat is named Pete! I'm sure he'd love the book, if only I could instill in him a love of reading.

Please do a whole video or music cd as my son loves the animation on this video, too, but it stops and I don't have the singing talent that you do. He keeps wanting this version, but it cuts off and then he gets sad. Then I put the live video, but then he's sad that he doesn't see the animation. He's sooo picky. I have the book. I just need music to go with it. Help a SAHM!

YES PLEASE!!! do create a finished video, for the children to enjoy. They will all want the book, if they don't already own it, but nice to have the animated video version as well!!!

Please stop teaching children to speak mproperly. The word buttons has a double "tt" it makes the /t/ sound not a glottal sound in the back of your throat. Goodness NO!

Lola, you are absolutely right! However, my typo does not change the fact that the very adorable book's video is modeling improper speech to young children and may have an adverse effect on their development.

Or not. I think children are capable of correct pronunciation when necessary. They are aware that for the purpose of this song buttons can take on a new form but in speech tt is proper. I think if we continue to discount their capabilities we are doing them a disservice. During this phase of their learning they are open to learning a lot. New languages included. As we grow that skill lessens, I think for the sake of the song, they will be ok with how the word buttons is being pronounced.

I agree with Lola6041. Β I think that children are more than capable of learning when it is considered acceptable to modify speech in music. Β Matter of fact, I just had a lesson about this with 6 year old children two weeks ago. Β It became a bit of an English lesson. Β Great teaching opportunity. Β Though, I will say that I think it's important to teach children that "buddon" instead of "button" is not the correct pronunciation. Β It is though, a technique we use in music quite often.

To the people complaining about the "improper" pronunciation in the song. It's not improper. It's one of many wonderful ways the English language can be spoken. It might not be the way your cultural group speaks, but that doesn't make it wrong. It's important to value all the ways of speaking that our children may hear at home, at school, and in the wide world around them.
