the last time I saw the Stanley Cup champion was a summer before he became a Stanley Cup champion and I asked him about crossing the line as it relates to flirting with a teammate's mom mild indignation was his reaction of course he wouldn't flirt with the teammates mom he'd leave that assignment for me the last time I met my other guests I believe we were at a pool party in Toronto we met briefly and I didn't have time to make things awkward he's climbing his way into elite status in the NHL top in the 30 gold plateau for the third time in his young career Sean Monahan of the Calgary Flames and Stanley Cup champion Tom Wilson are the Washington Capitals welcome to the cabby presents podcast sirs oh one thing for the audience we are recording in a hockey rink so the audio is gonna sound a little bit different than in the studio because here's this is where we are okay I'm gonna start with the hard questions first if your summer is like anywhere between 80 and 90 days give or take how many of those days are spent with tarps off no shirts weekend's more weekends I'd say Monday to Friday the share would be on and then weekends you can you know wherever you are at a pool party or at the pool it's time to time to take it off I think I saw I'm it was probably on your Instagram you just say you and a few buddies were probably had a cottage or something it was just a tarp saw trees yeah oh yeah it's let's I mean how many degrees you know we're different cuz I don't think I would ever take my shirt off although I did recently and I regret it was that it was a bold move and I shouldn't have made that move Sean do you spend most of your summers here in the city or are you on that cottage life tip as well no I'm just outside of City and Oakville but yeah I spend a majority of my time there and get up to cottages as much as I can is it your family's cottages or like friends or relatives yeah mines rent a cottage mine's family cottage and then I also go up to friends cottages quite a bit tossing me yeah buddies killing my buddies have cottages in Muskoka like next door to each other so oh very nice ESPN The Magazine the body issue is the last physical copy of ESPN the magazine after that is shutting its doors how do you guys get into the body issue and have you have you inquired about getting into the body issue no no definitely not for me I can't see money or the rubber ducky no that's a little I'm happy not without doing that what if you guys were asked would you do it I try have to decline why I don't know maybe Willy could do with his body how would you define though I don't know I just it's not me yeah once those pictures are taken it's over you know in what way teammates have them they're everywhere yeah it's just material it's material to be brought back and anybody killed for yeah what if you look dope though like there was I think it was um Edmonton I think was sorry it doesn't matter because you're gonna get ripped either way yes that's a part of being in a locker room that's like laced in jealousy though like you Alysa am I the a pack is so refined or the pods are so much definition but you're all in this man it like it was it last two years ago with some Thornton and and Bret burns yeah those guys can pull those guys are veterans sir yeah but you being a young buck you couldn't pull it how old is Seguin when he was in it I think he was oh I'm sure he caught a lot of heat for that you think so oh yeah I probably gave him some flack for it you did random story about Instagram I was in Calgary and one of my one of my dudes was just we were just catching up and I don't know if this has happened to you cuz it hasn't happened to me but I felt so uncomfortable he him him and his wife both unfollowed the same couple on Instagram and then the next time he saw the dude he's like hey uh you and uh you and wifey unfollowed me and my lady why did you guys do have you guys ever had that happen to you before no I haven't no that's I don't even use social media to be honest so it's Shawn what do you mean I just don't use it for like boy wait you must have a burner account just at least to see what counts boring samehada and all yeah yeah I just don't use it I mean I have an account for my dog and I'll cuff my buddies on that but other than that I don't it's all growing up and I don't 22:24 you're 24 you're not even on the gram no Wow and wait the dog your dogs account is on Instagram yeah there's this private and I just follow my buddies and teammates and whatnot it's a dog's name Winston that's a great name okay how about you Tom has it happened to you where someone has said why did it ask you why you unfollowed maybe like back and like high like high school back in the day but I think that's a little awkward nowadays could you imagine if someone like did that I don't know how like sometimes it's hard to even know like some people are better at it than others to know exactly when someone unfollowed tell you yeah I don't follow it that closely so I wouldn't really know someone unfollowed me I probably wouldn't confront them about it how do you react when people ask you to follow them when they say mediums or they're like they'll comment on your or a post and they'll ask you to follow them yeah okay bring out your phone give me a follower type thing and I usually I just do it and then a couple weeks later look at the axe do you remember cuz I mean it probably happened I mean you Sean you're like okay now I'm not even on it so yeah that's your – your built-in excuse but but you do you remember like oh you know rager or 49 or do really you remember his accounts yeah a lot of the time they're people you meet in an event or something and they do it then in two weeks you haven't talked them you don't really even know who they are and you can cut ties okay it happens to me every once a while too and it's more uncomfortable when it's a dude yeah what I do like will either in like face to face so uncomfortable when it's a girl cuz I'm at there's an explanation needed after because there may be a monitoring of your activity yeah it's that one tab it's like the it's like you and you see who comments on your post I mean shine the sorry this is like we're a little inside based but well you know we're not and then it's like the other ones like when you're following and like Oh to see oh so it's all like that picture like oh let me go see those pictures or whatever it's like Tom Wilson is oh yeah everything's okay now it is I was trying to think of that one model who's the model in the blurred lines video again I don't know yeah I know you're talking about I think what's-her-name provides yeah yeah I never saw the video anytime oh yeah I think I I think I downloaded it computer a few years ago okay so showing you're from Brampton yes for some reason Brampton has this explosion of talent not just in sports I mean you know basketball is like Tristan Thompson Tyler and his hockey I think seconds from Brampton and Rick Nationals for Brendan and then in like music there's Nav and then there's Tory Lanez and Roy woods and Alessia Cara like this I don't know what it is about Brampton you have any explanation why this city has produced so much talent good spot yeah I mean there's a lot a lot going on Brampton and I mean there's a lot of talent coming out of there so I mean I hope that continues you know like in New Jersey New Jersey has a bit of a New York complex because they're across the river yeah and there's like you know the Bridge and Tunnel crowd they come in on Fridays and Saturdays a party and everybody in New York's like oh we heat the bridges are you think there was a little bit of that with Brampton and Toronto where you're like going into the city to find more activity because it's a it's the biggest city in our country yeah I mean probably I mean if you're from Brampton you're going to Toronto quite a bit and getting in the mix there and stuff like that but I think I mean you see all the talent come out of Brampton especially singers and stuff like that I mean it's pretty cool and what part of the city do you grew up in time like young AG oh you're right Midtown yeah norther I know I left to go play junior in in uh in Michigan actually in grade 10 Bow Wow I was I was in the hood fair until grade 9 and 10 middle of it to me it was never downtown but right town is yeah like downtown is downtown where the ACC was and stuff as a kid I never really got down there that much but it it was good you're close enough but you're out of the mix a little bit speaking of me do you do your three years in Michigan before you went to the NHL oh yeah played three years in Plymouth Michigan then went to DC from there speaking of the Air Canada Centre which outcome was more unpredictable the st. Louis Blues winning the Stanley Cup or the Toronto Raptors winning an NBA championship what do you think was more unpredictable I'll be saying Louis I think I mean I seen Louis good team they pulled off they pulled it off and credit to them but I thought the Raptors are gonna win everything they got quite from the start of the season did you put money on it no yeah actions speak louder than words motivate some serious bang there was a lot of people that I like all right we got Kawhi we're gonna we're gonna do at least when the East I yeah I think coming out of the East and Golden State won back-to-back championships they had an unbeatable lineup when healthy I mean we saw and health about it was healthier yeah I mean it's certainly for you guys as you know you your bodies are punished and you got to play 82 games and then another with 60 more wins essentially I mean you know you guys experience out a few years ago um who's the kid speaking of bodies being punished the kid that that challenged over you in round white on the Russian kids behind a car especially so it's I think it was a common game 3 you know how did you okay you as a as a observer a fan you're watching highlights either on your phone or TV and you see and what you know obviously played against OVC you know how much of a beast he is but like a young buck just challenging one of the gods how do you experience his ultimate demise yeah I mean good for him he's trying to set a tone and make a difference and I mean unfortunately all we got the best of him did you say to yourself holy that's crazy like why the fuck would you do that no Willie's in the mix like that all the time and I mean you got to do things for your team sometimes that are uncomfortable but nobody's testing Tom Wilson like they were battling they were battling for a lot a while before that no one really realized we're into the regular season oh really okay I'm not going at it and it was kind of just the peak of the confrontation I think and I look over he's not always the left like Eli he'll he'll tell anyone like that wasn't even like that's not even his dominant hand oh I'm like but he was throwing straight rights though yeah he's just he's just like a extremely like powerful he's a huge like anyone that's seen him off the ice he's just a unit you know found out there so were you on the ice what happened were you that at first I'm like oh god like don't get hurt over that first thought I'm like oh we go why is OB fighting and I was like oh oh you know and then I mean is what it is I mean after the game was the tone was very somber and like everybody's like arms you know not everybody but oh he's like I opened and heard him that kind of thing but in the mall they call it for a little yeah like yeah and and it was an ongoing thing like he finally was like okay like you know has anybody tried to test you oh yeah all the time and then what happens oh I remember its messaging you oh you almost broke here do you know oh my gosh someone got hurt really yeah was it in a few good would know but this season there was can you break someone's orbital bone yeah who who was it Ian Cole yeah well I mean that happens it's I mean when there's when there's a fight I mean when you drop the gloves you know you know that you know either guy could potentially get hurt yeah that dude you know like the movie x-men like Cyclops he's got those now where's Sean you're you know nominated for a Lady Byng trophy award this year do people try to test use the throw them in junior did you I fought a guy in his team so you got the kind of dog you want yeah and then one time actually I'd I got a big suspension against this team is Union after I hit the guy I got off and it was Willie standing there like please don't come out reputation jr. oh he's just a big boy you know and I was like I hope this guy doesn't come out here I fought I fought against his team the game before that we played them and I'm like I'm not a fighter and don't come near me we were buddies for long enough where you got he got the free pass would you give someone a free pass in the NHL now I made the pants there's definitely guys that you're pretty close with that you'd try you don't look too but I mean it happens there Justin Williams I played for with for three years on my best buddies and he goes crashing into the boards with niskin and you're like you know you're kind of like Oh God like you don't want to do it but it's part of the game and so do you run from what board you throw some hands it wasn't like nothing really came of it but it was kind of at the time I'm like oh boy was that Willie like you know and then it's kind of you got to decide but how quickly do you have to decide oh like it depends you got out of a feel for the game you know who you're playing you know you're on the ice with all that I mean that's part of when we came in there was a lot of tougher a lot guys a lot tougher than me that I didn't want to go anywhere near like were you did you come in with Raffi Torres was the only guy I liked cold not like I still remember no no Kevin Westgarth well so we have Tim Jackman but now I have all the young guys stretch at the red line and stuff and Chad and I didn't want to be anywhere near the red line and warm up so when I came in because there was you know volt more in Rose Hill and and they're all standing there like you come to the red line you're chatting about something that's gonna go down John's got the tower John right if hockey culture was interested in engaging in the pettiness that we see in the NBA to build the soap opera the mail so proper Richard sports how do you think that would happen and you guys have any interest in dancing in the pettiness of of sports and other alphas I think some guys probably push the envelope who are starting to and hockey but there's just the culture that kind of keeps it on the wraps a little bit but I could see it in a couple years continuing to get further and further you know stretched who are the couple of guys you mentioned well like those guys and I like a guy on our team like Uzi like there's a dress code or whatever you're supposed to wear a suit he's always trying to push it to like where you're like come on you can't wear that er and I every team has a couple guys like that I'm sure that are little you know anybody like that on your team Sean yeah not really no it's I mean here and there I mean I mean guys want to dress nice and look good so I mean trying to stay within the dress code but I mean it's kind of it's getting looser and looser every year since I've been in a league your flow is exceptional buying it no I'm actually gonna cut it here for you in the next week or so why it's just too long it's too hot out and used to have a short you know in in like the pettiness that we love as as fans in NBA and not will really see this as much in in hockey but like it's you know it's commenting on opponent's posts or if like someone's a free agent it's like you're on its own cells now following this person we see it in the end and I felt a little bit too like Antonio Browns pretty good with that and MB obviously Kevin Durant takes most of the heat because he had a burner account he's responding to fans using his burner and stuff like that I think guys in hockey generally stay between the lines stay in their own room like I mean after the OB we just talked about I think especially girls bro they're tweeted out Oh V right after and like it's just it's not good the guy he get kind of a bad rap for that and I think he's more the culture of it's just a little bit different you know in basketball after they after the raps when they go right to the opponent and like you know say congrats or whatever and hockey celebrate with your own team for it's just it's just a different culture right you're right yeah so it's just different like it's less you have less you know communicate once the puck drops so you're like you know we're buddies but once the game's on there's no like you're trying to help your team win right whereas I think in basketball there's a little bit more of you know inclusiveness between teams like guys know each other and it's more public they it's more vocal their móvil vocal about it so but I mean you never know hockey could get there down there owed but for now there's kind of a hockey culture that keeps it pretty tight-knit I think in my era because I'm a lot older than you guys when dudes were like hardcore gamers they would you knew they're hardcore gamers because they would play unlike their computers like they're like the desktop not just on their phones or whatever and you guys have grown up in age we're like it's cool to be a gamer when I grew up it wasn't cool to be you might play Madden or auntie double-a football or any shelves something but like World of Warcraft in like that sort of thing it was that was like oh like Call of Duty or like those first-person shooters like that was you know do you guys remember – two-part question your first email addresses and then your first gamer tags where you create a profile and then it was like it was like your name Sean was your first email address my first email access was forsberg 21 or under a ball I think your first gamer do you member what you used like you used when you play video games like my gamertag yeah I was actually I don't remember it was something pretty outrageous though and I wasn't Junior me and my roommate we had it I honestly I don't remember what were you guys playing you'd always play call of duty nice like headsets of just no no the language imagine like those in the future like there's a leak and you know famous people like you guys like your audio was released and this world we just hear the most vile yeah yeah Tom your first email address and then your first gamertag only my first email address was like Tommy underscore 92 a or something like random I got a pretty cool name so whatever I could get to work I thought now yeah hotmail Gmail account the I switch story like I think at 17 I switched when I went to those funny ones on the chain email to me mails they're still hilarious and then your first gamertag Tom oh I was I never wasn't a big online gamer I did like with my brothers we'd play NHL and stuff but I wasn't a big online guy gotcha okay last question get you guys out of here because we you know we're of a certain age and we'd love to have a good time we love music and that sort of thing what is the when a particular song comes on you say to someone hold my drink because you need to either go sing all of the lyrics or get be in the mix on some makeshift dance floor what is your hold my drink song usually just dance with the drink no but sometimes you're like even more thing if it's a song if it's a banger dance moves or I need to put the drink down probably heard a couple in Greece no oh yeah I agree yeah they know how to party down there the music and the vibes and stuff it was it was next-level it was good and you wait you didn't put your drink down I don't know yeah right when I hear when I hear God's plan like those that that whirling Asura so it's not pretty clear I'm about to break well fellas this is thank you I wish we had more time but it was awesome speaking with you good luck with the training hopefully the invitation to the ESPN the body issue comes from both of you guys accept it because listen if if you get choked you know it's a sign of love because it's insults are the intimacy between men's where can people find you on Instagram time uh Tom underscore will saw well so yeah right yeah my name's too common I'm working or we're working on getting the actual handle like would it be Tom Wilson forty three or just Tom Wilson honestly like Tom Wilson you'd have to go like four nine eight six like there's so many Tom Wilson's and then Sean won't you embrace Instagram Sean Monahan well I don't know but maybe I will be out Winston yeah thank you very much
