Burbank California Nicole Bobo well this week represents a comeback of sorts for Nicole Bobek last year withdrawing after the short program in San Jose because of an injury she was injured this season spent about three months off the ice disappointing short program and she is in sixth place right now well Terry in the past Nicole has had some of her best performances when the pressure is suddenly off and I hope that holds true for her tonight opening jump a double axel nice confident beautiful you notice these jumps very clearly you’ll see that she has a wonderful spring a wonderful ability to get height the problem is keeping your head together to finish them all this triple lutz jump has been in the past difficult for tonight he takes it so much faster without the long back outside edge that it keeps her from switching edges at the last minute that’s better for the jump now watch the entrance to this triple flip this is where she’s had triple toe loop brother double toe loop for her she’s changed her mind in several instances about the order of the program well that hasn’t changed very much not at all we talked to her a little bit earlier tonight before this free skate began to ask her what she was planning she said we’re still figuring it out so you know that she does improvise on occasion but if you’re thinking that sixth-place trying to move up to win this or at least get on the podium is insurmountable remember at the European men’s championship this year alexei romanov was in sixth after the short program he won the championship triple loop-de-loop see now there will be no marks deducted for that she just won’t get credit for having done a triple loop knowing her she may yet put one in later in the program that’s a nice position on the lay back she does indeed have great extension this spiral series shows the night of the leg it’s just absolutely spectacular she knows how to play to a crowd she has charisma losing out of her she’s skating beautifully so far even though she is somehow or other once in a while not done something what she has done has been first-rate light carry and control in practices she’s been skating very very well she just had a very disappointing short program you like so ending in a big smile she needs triple toe in that fun that one innovation well this crowd believes he’s back but what a year she’s had and there’s her mom problems of all-time personal life problems physically problems getting back into the world of skating how nice it is to see that she just held it all together so well I think this audience is very proud of her and especially her mom I think it’s because everybody wants her to do well one skater that you could never count out and there’s Tonya quiet Kowski she and tara lipinski getting ready to skate in the next group we’ll be back in a moment very well there are certain athletes in every sport who know how to turn up the volume in the lights you get under the lights and escape their best this is one of them right here and there are her scores for technical merit and look at those marks they’re very very good odds sevens five eight and look at this triple flip combination watching the step it’s a back inside edge very good eye and it’s much straighter than it used to be and let’s hope that counts for its secured abs at good height and boy was she happy after that was over utterly he’s had a lot of critics over the past year but out with injuries he wasn’t able to Train like she liked she skated a terrific police game the presentation marks 5.6 up to 5.8 and she leads in terms of those that have skated this evening

I'm not sure whether the accuracy of calling that replayed jump a triple flip was intentional or not, because I believe she meant it to be taken as a lutz. Her flutz was so pronounced I doubt she ever actually completed a proper lutz, but nonetheless a phenomenal skater when she was on.

Not that I think she deserved it at all but just curious if Nicole had won the long would she have moved up to win overall, or atleast been 2nd overall over Kwan.

@russianskatingfan I *believe* no in both cases. If Nicole won the long, her ranking points would've been 3.0 (6th in short) + 1.0 (1st in long) = 4.0. Tara then, assuming you keep the rest of the rankings the same order, would've been 1.0 (2nd in short) + 2.0 (2nd in long) = 3.0 and Michelle would have been 0.5 (1st in short) + 3.0 (3rd in long) = 3.5. So it would've been the same podium (lowest total wins). I'm pretty sure that was the system in place, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

One of her best performances ever. She seemed so relaxed and into her music. Magical!

Say what you want about Nicole Bobek, some of the moves she did back then, STILL are being used today. Like the lutz take off that we see Rachel Flatt do, and that spiral with her leg in front of her that she used in her 1998 short program that everyone thought Sasha Cohen came up with…

So, was her first triple a Lutz or a Flip? In the beginning Dick Button says it's a Lutz. During the repetition he says it's a Flip! She had a 5.8 with a jump you can't tell what it is, a Salchow, 2 triple Toes, and a doubled Loop?  If she placed 3rd coming from 6th, it means the girls that placed from 4th to 6th, skated really shitty!!!!!

Yes a nice performance…she stood up throughout…but a bit overmarked to place 2nd in the free. 2 toes, 1 salchow, and one flip/lutz. A light technical content compared to the rest.

Say what you want, almost 20 years later (can't believe I'm saying that), we are still watching Nicole Bobek. Her skating is proving to be timeless. I know the Lutz was a flip, but it was still gorgeous in the end. Look at the run out and the landing position. And the Salchow was also pristine with a lovely landing. All in all, Nicole Bobek should be proud of herself. She has given the skating world some spirited programs with skating that is standing the test of time.

Love to watch her display those long, gorgeous, Cyd Charisse-like legs in the 2:40 spiral sequence.

I remember all the secrecy and intrigue with her mom being a lesbian. Some people really just don't get out of the house much if they found that odd.

How do Nicole and Tara both get 5.8s for technical merit? Tara’s program was infinitely more difficult? Can someone who knows skating explain this to me?
