in California now one thing you have to note about this how elegant this is the fact that nothing is hard-edged that honesty is central to her skating the gentility of her position off the ice for a month away from competition for two months with a stress fracture until on her left foot she came here to tested she got seven perfect sixes for presentation in the short program trying to win her second national championship makes Michelle's so special is the way she takes the audience on her journey of emotions her opening triple is a triple lutz double toe combination oh that was exquisite from where I'm sitting they perfect on the landing straight up and look at how this forward moves just embrace you with their joy and their uplifting kind of quality combination jump triple lutz double toe and replace the triple toe triple toe combination [Applause] double toe we replace that combination because that's the jump the triple toe is what hurts her Brooke crippled clip but the straightedge going in again perfect landing position straight up and down reminiscent of Janet Liv Michels career she has seen tapes of the Olympic performance when she fell and got up smiling and she says that's the way I want to be in her face tara lipinski the leader go back in second Michelle must come in at least second to win second in this free skate to be the overall champion [Applause] you spend the first to the left in the laid-back position now mammals are the right right with your left sit spin to the left triple salchow [Applause] [Applause] watch and now her final move the triple toe this is what hurts her foot [Applause] [Applause] every one of these girls at the top sorry these ladies should be very satisfied what a magnificent moment absolutely brilliant just takes your breath away the short program and this two performances for the ages we'll be back after this from our ABC stations you're watching the State Farm US Figure Skating Championships on ABC sports Michelle Kwan sending a message 97 is over 98 hasn't begun how wonderful and look at this Lutz now watch the position of the back as she lands right here look at how perfectly straight that is her sister Karen she knows what it's like to be out there Marge I think she was doing every jump with her sister for technical merit Michelle and Frank Carroll the crowd was chanting sitcom protecting America one the rest five-member that's right she was really marvelous with her Tammy call but it still could have been higher technique that's why five nine is a perfect mark for we'll see what happens though with the presentation remember she got seven perfect sixes in the short program yeah look at it homeboy take point almost across-the-board 15.9 and the rest car that is so well it's fun [Applause] there must be a lot of coaches and parents who are very proud tonight now Brian Boitano knows what it's like to get perfect 60's at the national championships we work rivers together the other night Michelle Kwan who is the first to get perfect system fixes in the short program the other and near perfection again but we're not

You just don't see this kind of emotion in skating anymore. It's gone down a similar path as gymnastics…it's all about the difficulty minus the artistry

The only thing not perfect about this is the position on the layback. Other than that, this was sheer perfection.

The most overrated skate in the history of figure skating.

I wanna know who the hell gave her the 5.9 in the artistic portion?
    Really?!
Were they not watching the same program?
Also, I miss the days of the 6.0 judging system. I've never warmed up to this convoluted judging system that runs skating today.
If only the ISU would've dealt with the judges who were in cahoots to block some skaters from winning a medal, we might still have the 6.0 system.

She was so fun to watch because she genuinely looked like she was relishing every moment, and every element was executed so well. We will never see another Michelle Kwan.

I am sorry but I think this program deserved a silver medal at best. Less agressive technical skating and Michelle relied on the same type program with elements in different order….as far as artistry is concerned, she is superb but this program got boring about halfway thru…the music lulls you to sleep like a lullaby and just "looking peaceful" is bullshit. I can skate looking peaceful and I passed MIF and International Dance level tests, so please don't comment to me telling me I don't know skating. Everyone was convinced it was Michelle's "turn" and no one banked on international judges to go with the young upstart Tara, who skated to more vibrant music that had pizazz…and put on a technical tour de force with better jumps, better, faster spins and gave he all artistically. Just because the music was "young"….well guess what ? she was 13, so file that under duh…everyone thought as long as Michelle stood up, she would just get handed the gold medal. I think she should have used this for short program music, and then take that Rachmaninoff piece and make that the long, because that piece was off the chain good and she would have blown Tara out of the water.

She is a beautiful skater, but Sasha Cohen in my opinion was the best in the world. I just wish her nerves didn't get her .

I read she came in to this competition with no high expectations, simply wanting to test her injured toe to see how it would hold up. Tara was defending champion with all the pressure. That allowed Michelle to skate arguably the best program of her life. A month later their positions were reversed for the Olympics and Michelle had all the pressure. Still this skate will be hard to top, perhaps if Michelle added that triple-triple combo back into her program, she would've received higher technical marks and edged Tara for the Gold at the Nagano Olympics.

Contrary to almost everyone I have never liked Michelle Kwan. I thought she was stiff and most of all completely lacked emotion. The fact that she draws so much reaction from anyone is completely beyond me.

I know she's worth like 13 million dollars, but it's still kind of sad she never got her Olympic gold. She melded the athletic and artistic sides of figure skating like no one before or after her. This long program at the U.S. Nationals is probably the best ladies figure skating performance of all time.

What a brilliant performance Michelle did at the 1998 nationals. The entire program is great but my favorite part is the one that follows her second triple loop. The way she moves her arms and the expression on her face is so passionate; just perfect.
