A SPOKANE TEEN IS HEADING TO A BIG FIGURE SKATING COMPETITION AT THE END OF THE MONTH… BUT THE 14-YEAR-OLD IS FACING SOME HURDLES WHILE CHASING HER DREAMS. MIKAYLA JAMES IS HOPING THAT THE COMMUNITY CAN HELP OUT. KXLY’S ALLIE NORTON WORKING FOR YOU TONIGHT. SHE SKATES ALONG WITH THIS HOPEFUL AND HAS THE STORY. (NATS) IN PERSON, MIKAELA JAMES IS A LITTLE SHY… BUT WHEN THIS 14 YEAR OLD HITS THE ICE (NATS OF ICE) SHE’S GOOFY, EMOTIONAL… JUST AN OVERALL STAR. (SOT/ MIKAYLA JAMES- Figure Skater) (“You just got to put your head to it and be like, okay this is what it’s about. You got to be weird, you got to creep them out a little bit.”) EXACTLY WHY SHE QUALIFIED FOR THE U-S FIGURE SKATING NATIONAL SHOWCASE IN MICHIGAN AT THE END OF THE MONTH. UNLIKE TECHNICAL FIGURE SKATING, SHOWCASE LEAVES IT ALL TO THE IMAGINATION. SHE’LL DO THREE ROUTINES: IMPROV, ENTERTAINMENT AND DRAMATIC. (NATS OF BARBARA STREISAND) HER DRAMATIC ROUTINE WILL BE TO THE TUNE OF BARBARA STREISANDS “PAPA CAN YOU HEAR ME?” A PIECE THAT HITS CLOSE TO HOME. (SOT/ MIKAYLA JAMES- Figure Skater) (“I can relate to it because I don’t know my dad. So it’s relatedable I guess. I wonder if he knows.”) MIKAYLA WAS RAISED BY HER MOTHER, JESSICA. SHE’S HER CHEERLEADER, HER SUPPORT SYSTEM AND THE ONE WHO HAS BEEN THERE THROUGH IT ALL. WHILE SHE WANTS HER DAUGHTER TO ACHEIVE HER GOALS, MONEY IS TIGHT. MIKAYLA QUALIFIED LAST YEAR TOO, BUT FINANCIAL PROBLEMS STOPPED THEM FROM GOING. THIS YEAR, THE FAMILY HAS BEEN FUNDRAISING, SO NOTHING GETS IN THE MIDDLE OF MIKALYA’S DREAMS. (SOT/ BERKELY VILLARD- Mikayla’s Coach) (“I think this is something that she can make a lifelong choice as far as performing in shows all over the world or possibly heading off into Disney.”) THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT SHE WANTS TO DO… AND THIS UPCOMING COMPETITION CAN HELP HER GET THERE… BUT FIRST, SHE HAS TO MAKE THE TRIP AND SHOW WHAT SHE’S MADE OF. (SOT/ MIKAYLA JAMES- Figure Skater) (“It’s like the cat chasing the mouse and it finally gets it.”) IN SPOKANE, I’M ALLIE NORTON KXLY 4 NEWS.
