hey guys I’m Mary welcome back to my
learn to skate series today we’re focusing on our basic three skills let’s
get to our first skill we’re going to be working on is forward stroking this is our
big kid step up from forwards marching our goal is to stroke forwards using our inside edges
and proper power across the width of the ice we are going to start off in the T
position every time we push off push off on the middle of the blade with the
knees nice and bent try to gain power with every push aim for a nice extension
and pointed toes a common mistake is pushing with their toes and kicking back
so try to avoid this instead push off the middle of your blade it is also
common to have stiff legs making it harder to gain speed some other common
mistakes are having your arms too high or looking down during stroking our next
skill is going to be forward half swizzle pumps our goal is to go along a
circle doing 6-8 swizzle pumps we’re gonna hug the circle arms are over
the circle as well knees are nice and bent we’re gonna bend the legs and pump
making Us with the leg on the outside of the circle the leg inside the
circle will stay bent and slightly leaning inside the circle a common
mistake is to speed through these pumps and not complete them remember from
basic 2 our standstill two foot turns now we are graduating to moving 2 foot turns
you guys got this we’re gonna gain some speed with a moving two-foot glide we’re
going to turn on the ball of our feet lifting up our heels while doing so our
arms are going to stay on top of the circle we are looking into the circle as
we turn for our fourth skill we’re gonna focus on a beginner version of backward one
foot glides this is probably the trickiest skill on this level so try to hold your
one foot glide as long as possible this skill is going to come back in basic
four start off with a heel to toe position to make it easier glide
backwards on two feet then we will practice transferring our weight to one
foot we are going to stay forward on the blade arms in front of us to balance a
common mistake is getting lopsided by dropping the shoulder or the hip
throwing us off balance we know how to stop forwards so now to learn how to stop
backwards we have our one foot backwards snowplow stop we are going to bend and
push gently on the ice on the middle edge of our blade to slowly stop almost
done guys we are going to learn forward slaloms we are going to do four to six
half swizzle pumps alternating side to side on a straight
line I think of these as alternating half swizzle pumps we are nice and bent
our shoulders are working with our hips they are nice and low in the knees a
common mistake is not pushing the shoulders against the hips notice how I
am slowing down here lastly we have our bonus skill with those we’re going to do
forward inside pivots we’re going to try them counterclockwise and clockwise
our goal is to do three in a row without stopping my pivoting knee is nice and
bent the other leg is straight back I’m going to keep the head arms and chest up
I’m going to push with my leg and stay in an
inside edge a mistake is just to keep pumping and not having a good flow

    You make gliding backwards after your two footed turn look easy. I lose speed after my turn, because my edges need working on.

    Oh yay! You are doing basics levels videos! I am in adult basic 5. The frustrating part for me is my left side is so much weaker than my right side. For example, i can do 3 turns counter-clockwise and backward cross overs counter-clockwise, but barely or not at all going clockwise. Tips to strengthen and gain flexibility for our weaker side would be great!

    Another thing i struggle with is the two foot turns clockwise. I have to slow down to a stop to turn. Counterclockwise is easy though.ugh…🤦‍♀️

    One foot slaloms (or powerpulls – depending where you’re from) and really emphasis correct technique…. 👍🏼👍🏼⛸⛸
