[ CHEERS AND APPLAUSE ] RYAN SEACREST WAS SUPPOSED TO BE HERE TONIGHT. BUT HE’S SICK. SEACREST IS LITERALLY OUT. BECAUSE HE HAS TOO [ BLEEP ] MANY SHOWS. I TOLD HIM TO SLOW DOWN AND NOW WHO SUFFERS? WE DO! THAT’S RIGHT. WE, AMERICA SUFFERS BECAUSE OF THAT. SO ANYWAY, RYAN’S GOT HIS “AMERICAN IDOL” SPECIAL, FINALE ON. BUT IT’S OKAY. BECAUSE ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT HERE ON ABC, I AM MOVING TO PRIMETIME FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY WITH THE LEGENDARY NORMAN LEAR FOR A SPECIAL LIVE PRESENTATION OF TWO OF THE GREAT SITCOMS IN TELEVISION HISTORY, “ALL IN THE FAMILY” AND “THE JEFFERSONS.” WE HAVE A STAR-STUDDED CAST. PLAYING ALL THE ROLES. AND THEY’RE RAERSING ARE REHEAR NOW AT SONY STUDIOS. THIS IS SOMETHING WE PUT TOGETHER REALLY QUICKLY, BUT LET’S CHECK IN WITH THEM. ANTHONY ANDERSON, WANDA SYKES, HOW’S IT REQUESTING, GUYS? >>GREAT.>>WE SAID WE WERE GOING TO PRETEND LIKE THE SPEAKER WAS BROKEN.>>WHAT DOOR ARE YOU STANDING IN FRONT OF RIGHT NOW?>>WE’RE ACTUALLY ON THE SET OF “THIS IS US.” WE ARE STAND-INS FOR THE CAST OF “THIS IS US.” THAT’S WHERE WE’RE AT.>>OH, LOOK AT THAT. IT’S THE GUY FROM “THIS IS US.”>>HOLD ON.>>Jimmy: IT’S YOUR COOKIE NEIGHBOR, WOODY HARRELSON.>>I WAS FOCUSSED ON THE CHARACTER THERE, JIMMY.>>Jimmy: WOODY IS PLAYING ARCHIE BUNKER, ALONGSIDE MARISSA SEW MAY. YOU’RE NOT GOING TO WEAR THAT HAT WHEN YOU PLAY ARCHIE, ARE YOU?>>NO, SIR.>>Jimmy: MARISSA TOMEI IS PLAYING EDITH, BUNKER, WANDA, YOU ARE PLAYING LOUISE JEFFERSON ALONGSIDE JAMIE FOXX WHO IS PLAYING GEORGE JEFFERSON, I HAVE THIS ALL RIGHT?>>SO FAR YOU DO.>>Jimmy: HOW’S IT GOING SO FAR? DOES EVERYBODY KNOW THEIR LINES?>>AH.>>NO, WE JUST KIND OF WING IT A LITTLE BIT, JIMMY.>>THEY’RE JUST WORDS ON A PAGE.>>YEAH, WE’RE TRYING TO CUT IT DOWN.>>JIM BURROW SAID FEEL FREE TO IMPRO AD IMPROVISE.>>Jimmy: WANDA YOU TOLD ME WHEN I ASKED YOU TO DO THIS YOU STARTED TO CRY, IS THAT TRUE?>>I REALLY DID. YES. YES. BECAUSE I WAS SO SHOCKED THAT YOU DIDN’T ASK QUEEN LATIFAH FIRST. [ LAUGHTER ] OR DID YOU?>>Jimmy: SHE’S VERY BUSY RULING OVER HER SUBJECTS. NOW WE HAD A LITTLE CAST PARTY, A DINNER PARTY AT MY HOUSE LAST NIGHT, AND ELLIE, YOU WERE UNABLE TO MAKE IT TO THE CAST PARTY.>>IT IS MY NIGHTMARE THAT THIS SUBJECT WOULD COME UP. I WAS UNABLE TO MAKE IT. I AM SO SORRY.>>Jimmy: TELL THEM WHY.>>IT’S BECAUSE I’M PREGNANT, AND I FELT SICK. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] BUT SERIOUSLY, I’VE BEEN BLAMING THE PREGNANCY ON SO MANY THINGS, AND THIS IS ONE OF THEM. I I’M SO SORRY I WASN’T THERE.>>Jimmy: OH, I’M SO SORRY, WE’LL HAVE TO LET YOU GO. WE CAN’T HAVE THAT.>>BYE, ELLIE.>>Jimmy: PLEASE DON’T WRITE ABOUT THIS ON TWITTER. I WAS JUST KIDDING. LAST NIGHT WAS ONE OF THE MOST, I THINK FUNNIEST NIGHTS OF MY LIFE, AND LARGELY BECAUSE ANTHONY, I MEAN, LARGELY BECAUSE WE ALL GOT VERY DRUNK, BUT ALSO BECAUSE ANTHONY, YOU WERE JUST, I MEAN, IT WAS REALLY A TOUR DEFORCE. YOU ARE PLAYING UNCLE HENRY OR JUST HENRY, HENRY JEFFERSON, BROTHER OF GEORGE JEFFERSON, DO YOU REMEMBER WATCHING “THE JEFFERSONS” AS A KID? AND WHAT DID THAT SHOW MEAN TO YOU?>>OF COURSE I REMEMBER WATCHING “THE JEFFERSONS” AS A KID. BECAUSE OF NORMAN LEAR, “BLACK-ISH” IS ABLE TO BE ON THE AIR. AND OUR SHOW WAS CREATED IN THE VEIN OF THESE SHOWS. SO WE OWE A DEBT OF GRATITUDE TO NORM.>>Jimmy: I THINK THAT IS TRUE. MORE THAN ANY OTHER SHOW, “BLACK-ISH” CAPTURES THE SPIRIT OF NORMAN LEAR. WANDA, YOU LEFT ALL OF YOUR CLOTHES AT MY HOUSE. WANDA LEFT THE HOUSE NAKED.>>YOUR AUDIENCE LAUGHS, JIMMY, BUT IT’S THE TRUTH, BECAUSE I HAD TO TAKE WANDA HOME.>>Jimmy: ANTHONY WAS NICE. ANTHONY’S WIFE TOOK WANDA HOME, WHICH WAS VERY, VERY NICE. AND JOE VAUGHN WAS A LITTLE BIT LATE.>>THEY TOOK ME TO THE WRONG HOUSE, THOUGH, JIMMY.>>Jimmy: WHAT’S THAT?>>THEY TOOK ME TO THE WRONG HOUSE.>>Jimmy: A HOUSE IS A HOUSE, WANDA. A HOUSE IS A HOUSE. YOU WERE A LITTLE BIT LATE TO THE PARTY. TELL EVERYONE WHY YOU WERE LATE.>>OH, MAN. BECAUSE I, THIS IS MY FIRST TIME COMING TO YOUR HOME, JIMMY, AND I RODE MY MOTORCYCLE AND I DIDN’T REALIZE THERE WERE SO MANY HILLS. I GOT STUCK BEHIND SOMEBODY’S ESCALADE. SO I WAS HOLDING MY BIKE BEHIND THE ESCALADE.>>Jimmy: SOMEBODY HAD TO PICK HIM UP AND ABANDON HIS BICYCLE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL. IT WAS A ROUGH NIGHT FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE.>>I TEXTED YOU PRIVATELY, BUT ONCE AGAIN I WILL SAY I THINK IT IS WRONG FOR YOU TO INVITE THE ENTIRE CAST TO YOUR HOUSE AND EXCLUDE ME. I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY THAT HAPPENED.>>BUT YOU SHOWED UP ANYWAY.>>I WAS THERE.>>Jimmy: WOODY, WOODY, ARE YOU AT ALL NERVOUS ABOUT PLAYING ONE OF THE, I MEAN, MAYBE THE GREATEST SITCOM ROLE OF ALL TIME IN AMERICAN TELEVISION, ARCHIE BUNKER, DOES THIS SHAKE YOU IN ANY WAY?>>WELL, I WASN’T THINKING OF IT THAT WAY, BUT NOW I’M QUITE NERVOUS. TO BE HONEST, JIMMY. WHY DID YOU SAY THAT TO ME?>>Jimmy: I’M SORRY. I’M NOT VERY GOOD IN THIS ROLE. THANK YOU ALL FOR DOING THIS.>>ALSO IT’S GOING TO BE A LIVE THING, SO THERE’S THAT. THERE’S A LOT OF NERVES, YEAH. THERE’S SOME NERVES.>>HE’S NOT THAT NERVOUS, JIMMY, WOODY AND I TEST DROVE A $3.6 MILLION FERRARI TODAY ON THE LOT. THAT’S HOW NERVOUS WOODY IS.>>Jimmy: WELL, THANK YOU ALL FOR DOING THIS AND CONGRATULATIONS, ELLIE ON THE LITTLE ONE INSIDE YOU. WE’LL SEE YOU NEXT WEEK. Woody Harrelson as Archie? Marissa Tomei as Edith? Seriously? Might as well cast Peter Dinklage as Lionel. Or how about Stacey Abrams as Gloria?

    One cannot do any justice if we forgot to mention the great writer and producer of these two shows – Norman Lear. This man is the G.O.A.T. producer of the following classic TV sitcoms (and every single one of them is a classic): All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Good Times, Sanford and Son, One Day at a Time and Maude. Norman Lear was a genius. The true G.O.A.T.

    Used to love these shows. They are two of the classics. Another one was Good Times. And then there was Sanford & Son. The character Archie Bunker was the polar opposite of the real-life Carroll O'Connor. The late O'Connor was a very compassionate, caring and loving man who fought for equality and people's rights. He was nothing at all in real life, like that racist, foul-mouthed and bigoted character (Archie Bunker) that he played on the show. The two were total opposites! But old Carroll O'Connor was such a great actor and he played that Archie role so perfectly, that people bought into the character and some even thought that was the real him. Watched the special last night and loved every single minute of it. Great acting. Brought back great memories. The quality of acting back then was so good it was ridiculous.

    the last line in Jeffersons which i knew was coming How come nobody told me we overcame sounded real lame coming from an 90 yr old Marla Gibbs. When she first said it back in the 70s she said it with spunk and if was funny back then. If you watch the original clip from the 70s there was a loud roar from the audience after she said it Not so much last night. That tells you that racism was full force center stage back then Not so much now aday Trust me i was around back then to verify

    I like the idea that they came up with about bringing these two shows back, but I don't agree with the cast that they put together to play these characters. I guess since it was a last-minute idea they couldn't take weeks or months the cast the right people which is the norm for Hollywood.

    Great shows in the 70's full of social-consciousness (I was a young teen then). As a 60+ something now, I wanted to say, 'Kudos' to all of the actors in their portrayals. I really enjoyed their performances.

    Jimmy Kimmel is a no talent bum get a life. And how about leaving the old shows alone you cannot make them better or as good. Just a generation jealous of another generation. You already ruined other old shows and movies. No originality or creativeness to create good new shows or music for that matter.

    If you have not seen it, watch, watch watch, on demand -great fun Marisa and Jamie did great job channeling characters as well as whole cast. I think the director toned down some of the emphatic responses to fit today's crowd, but what fun to travel back in time and see relevance to today.

    The all in the family skit wasn't that great, the only reason why the Jeffersons skit was a little better is because Marla Gibbs surprised everybody repricing her role as Florence Johnston Jamie Foxx is an Oscar winner yet forgot his lines and Kerry Washington probably did the best as Helen Willis….. with Marla and Jackee together, there was almost a 227 moment, if Regina King was in this skit, there would have been a 227 and a Ray moment

    The shows should continue with rotating stars doing the roles.

    Line up David Alan Grier, Keenan Wayans for George Jefferson;
    Jackee' for "Weezie";
    Sub in Wanda Sykes for Florence -(no NBA in primetime so there's my reference)…
    Jim Carey for Mr. Bentley; etc.

    Use "The Conners" as the lead in and use "In Living Color" as the nightcap. Primetime gems!

    Jimmy Kimmel evidently never heard theexpressions " Some things should be Left alone " and " let Sleeping Dogs Lie !" Again it shows how Hollywood is Talentless and Unoriginal ! The Actors last Night were trying to be the actors , not the characters ! You can never imitate perfection ! The original actors worked together as a well oiled machine ! Last nights actors were like Amateurs out of Sync of who they were supposed to be ! Tell Jimmy Kimmel Hollywood is OVER ! Tinsel town is Now Tarnished Town ! Nice try Jimmy but No Cigar !

    Woody Harrelson was the real weak point of this event. Quite awful, and his attempt at a NYC accent was an embarrassment. Overall, the actors who tried to imitate the originals too closely came off as fake and caricatures. The original cast was so good because you believed in the characters. Jennifer Hudson’s performance of “Movin’ on Up” was great, though, a real high point.

    I missed this when it was originally broadcast but was happy that I had the opportunity to watch it by chance while flipping throughout the channels tonight.  Unfortunately I found the "All In The Family" skit almost painful to watch.  The casting was all wrong and I just didn't enjoy it at all.  Jamie Foxx as George Jefferson was one of the saving graces.  The "Jeffersons" was not quite as painful as Marla Gibbs made a cameo which completely saved the skit.  I''ve seen spoofs of "All In The Family" and the "Jeffersons" before and it was way better than this.  They should have taken more time to hire the right people without necessarily focusing hiring celebrities to play the parts.  I was more than a bit disappointed.

    It was ok, but ‘The Jeffersons’ had way too much screen-time w/out significantly more George. Jamie Foxx made me piss my pants in his opening scene before he said his first line.

    I cannot understand the episode selection from ‘The Jeffersons’, though I rarely watched the show. My point is that it simply was not funny or entertaining.

    The collaboration between shows was perfect, and I’d ask for more even if it was 5-hours long. Jennifer Hudson could have sang the intro after any commercial break w/out controversy, bc she was magnificent.

    I really enjoyed the first part, but sadly felt bored and confused by what I felt was a huge missed opportunity on every level. God Bless.

    I wish they had not done impressions of the originals if they had acted like they normally do i mean Jamie fox has an ‘oscar’ is too twitchy i know sherman was like that but jamie is way better than that. And marisa tome has an oscar too why didnt she just pay it like a new character the gimmick was distracting woody and wonda are too talented to be impersonating old characters

    Shame they are trying to recreate these shows. The original Jeffersons is untouchable.

    Wow, Jimmy didn't call her baby a fetus! He spoke as if the baby was a person! Interesting!

    If they keep doing live performances of two classic TV shows (an original and a spin-off) they should do: Perfect Strangers & Family Matters, Cheers & Frasier, and Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul

    Terrible. Especially Woody Harrelson. And I'm 58 years old, and was brought up on the originals.
