>>LU CHEN SKATED EARLIER THIS EFFECT AND DID SO QUITE WELL, THANK YOU. SHE’S IN FOURTH. TARA LIPINSKI’S SPREADING THE GOOD NEWS. SHE’S SECOND. MICHELLE KWAN STILL BACKSTAGE IS IN FIRST, MARIA BUTIRSKAYA WAS THE FIRST TO SKATE, SHE HAS LEFT THE BUILDING. AND SHE’S LEFT IT IN THE HANDS OF HER RUSSIAN TEAMMATE ON THE ICE RIGHT NOW, JUST TURNED 19, HERE IS IRINA SLUTSKAYA. TWICE THE EUROPEAN CHAMPION, 1996 AND 1997. SHE HAS STRUGGLED, HOWEVER, THIS SEASON.>>SKATES WITH A LOT OF SPEED, A LOT OF POWER. THE TRIPLE LUTZ TECHNIQUE, NOT TEXTBOOK AT ALL, ARMS, DOUBLE RIGHT THERE, DOUBLE. THE WAY SHE SETS THAT TRIPLE LUTZ UP, IT’S NOT MEANT TO HAPPEN. SHE STEPS INTO A TRIPLE LOOP, BIG, NICE EASY TRIPLE LOOP. DOUBLE AXEL. ANOTHER DOUBLE AXEL, THE ARM OVER THE HEAD. SOKOLOVA DID THE OUTER ONE. THE JUDGES LIKED IT. THE JUDGES LIKE IRINA SLUTSKAYA A LOT. I THINK THEY’RE WAITING FOR THE PERFORMANCE. A GREAT DRAW, LATE IN THE EVENT. TO DRAW THIS LATE, THERE’S A LOT OF MARKS LEFT OUT THERE AND THE DOUBLE-DOUBLE COMBINATION MISTAKE IS GOING TO COST HER ANY CHANCE FOR A MEDAL.>>MENTIONED THE DIFFICULTY SHE HAD THIS YEAR, SHE FINISHED FOURTH AT THE RUSSIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS BACK IN DECEMBER. AND THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION SENT HER TO THE CHAMPION SERIES FINAL WHERE SHE DID FINISH FOURTH TO EARN A SPOT ON THE TEAM.>>IRINA SLUTSKAYA FROM MOSCOW, BRONZE MEDALIST IN THE WORLD COMPETITION IN 1996 WHEN MICHELLE KWAN WON HER TITLE. FOURTH IN THE WORLD LAST YEAR BUT GOING THROUGH SOME DIFFICULT TIMES RIGHT NOW.>>MISTAKES, LOOK AT THE ARM RIGHT HERE. THE ARM — THE RIGHT ARM IS JUST SO SHALLOW, IT WOULD BE LIKE THROWING A RIGHT HOOK TWO INCHES FROM A GUY’S FACE. YOU NEED TO COCK THAT ARM ALL THE WAY BACK AND THROW IT AS HARD AS YOU CAN TO GET THE ROTATION. THE DOUBLE AXEL WITH THE ARM OVER THE HEAD. THE JUDGES LOVE THIS. IN SOKOLOVA’S PROGRAM, THE ARM GOES UP. YOU CAN SEE HERBAL LANCE GOES WAY UP. BEREZHNAYA AND KAZAKOVA, SILVER AND GOLD IN THE PAIRS EVENS LOOK ON.>>AMONG THAT NUMBER, JAN HOFFMANN. HE WAS THE NINTH JUDGE THE NIGHT NANCY KERRIGAN AND OKSANA BAIUL BATTLED FOR GOLD IN LILLEHAMMER. HE GAVE HIS JUDGMENT IN FAVOR OF BAIUL BY .1 OF ONE ARTISTIC POINT.>>BUT HE’S A WONDERFUL GUY, GREAT INTEGRITY. HE ONLY PUTS A MARK DOWN IF HE FEELS STRONGLY ABOUT IT, AND HE FELT STRONGLY ABOUT THAT. GREAT MAN.>>FIRST SEFT MARKS FOR IRINA SLUTSKAYA.>>SHE’S NOT OUT OF IT YET.>>AND THAT MOVES HER IN FRONT OF SURYA BONALY.

Scott's remark "dodging the bullet" in the LP warmup really hit the nail on the head. She was LUCKY to be placed as high as she was.

This program was terrible. It's concept belonged to a junior skater.

I'm not used to seeing Irina with that much hair.

15 years later and I still need somebody to explain to me how a double lutz/doube toe combo is better than a triple toe/triple toe combo. The final slap in the face to Bonaly, no wonder she did the back flip in the long.

Irina was cute but her placement in the Final group in the LP was a travesty. No one who does a double-double combo should have placed as high as she did. She shouldn't have even been in the penultimage group. 10th place would've been more appropriate-or even lower.

I love how Scott defends Jan Hoffman when once again the American commentator tries to make him out to be as some kind of cheating judge, the so-called East vs. West bias that allegedly 'robbed' Kerrigan of gold over Baiul rears it's ugly head. Jan thought overall Baiul had the better qualities in '94 and that's that.

Hoffmann actually said that Baiul's artistry was more natural and very lyrical, whereas Kerrigan was more forced and not natural.

I remember that the commentators on the version I watched here in the UK said she looked very uncomfortable and out of shape.

to faeryqueen and what about lysacek on the last olympics taking a gold with no 4x jump? the level he showed was totally out of top 7 not speaking of podium at all. However, everyone was talking about his artistry (clearly as a substitute to the technical performance)… which is also a huge subjective issue in my opinion!

I always hated this programme, the music was just awful and that costume? Just no. I even developed a hatred of that hand movement at the beginning of the spiral. And I was a big Irina fan up to that point. I'm so glad she found her way back.

Even though there are people out there who believe Surya Bonaly didn't have the skating finesse as some of these other women, I still can't believe the judges placed Irina ahead of her in the SP.
