I am Sophia, I’m 30. I’m a high-level sportsperson in parachuting. I’m a member of the women’s formation skydiving national team. We do figures in the air, jumping from a plane. Figures with 4 people. I have an unusual carrer history because I used to be a dancer. I loved it. I did it for 10 years. But at some point I was tired of it. I decided to quit. I thought : I am tired of being with girls, of sports with a tense atmosphere and jealousy. I am looking for a boy’s sport. That’s how I got into parachuting, and by a twist of fate I am now in the French women’s team. What jump do we do on the boards ? We train approximately 15 days a month. We gather in a training center in many places in France. A jump lasts 50 secondes so it is very fast. And we can’t talk in the air. From the moment we get off the plane, we can’t talk to each other. We have full face helmets. It is really loud up there. We have skateboards, on which we reproduce the falling position. We use them to prepare the figures and be ready during the jump. So we are in a wind tunnel, a skydive simulator. For us, it is a useful tool to work on our positions and figures. We use it a lot, especially during winter. It reproduces the free fall sensations. So we can work a lot for a longer time than in the air. So that when we are in the plane and do 40-50 secondes only jumps we already know what to do, we are already prepared. So now we are getting ready for the jump. We use a jumpsuit with grips on arms and legs. We need them to hold each other to perform the figures in the air. We also have altimeters, a visual one to see the altitude during the fall. And also a loud one which is in our helmet. We have a full face helmet to protect us from each others’ punches during the fall. Like knee, feet and arm punches. Because we fall really fast and close to each other. So it is important to protect your face. And the most important : the parachute. Here it is. It is a backpack. We have a main one on the bottom. And an emergency one on the top. “You are gonna show us who the boss is” Once everything is set up. We get on the plane. And we do a series of 3 to 4 jumps. We do around 12 jumps a day. My feelings are not the same than at the beginning. But it did not become something normal either. I don’t have scary feelings anymore. But it became something else. Now it is the stress of the competition. And there is just pleasure left. The free fall sensations are strangely very soft. We think about something brutal, violent because we fall at a 200km/h speed. So it is still demanding. It is still about falling. But it is a thrilling sensation. It is a feeling of satisfaction and freedom. It is quite remarkable. To be alone in the sky with a 360 degree view. They really are precious moments. We are all addicted to this sport. Well, not everyone. But you can easily become an addict quickly. It is among these sports and hobbies which are addictive. When you experience the sensations of free fall ou either like it or not but it is always quite bold. When you get sucked into it, it is hard to stop. If I had to stop… Today, I don’t even think about it. Stopping competition, yes it will happen someday. But stopping parachuting completely… is not an option.
