Hi, I’m Tim Phang. I’m 23 years old. I’ve been skating for about 12 years. I’m from Arlington, Virginia which is right
outside of Washington, D.C. I’m now sponsored by Universal Skate Design,
and I’m going to be talking to you about rollerblading. Aggressive skating is pretty much all about
grinds. Grinds are when you place your skates on top
of an object and slide across it. There are essentially 2 categories of grinds. There are groove tricks and sole tricks. Groove tricks are when the obstacle is between
your 2 inner wheels. And sole tricks are when you place your skate
on top of an object on the sole of the skate. And so an example of a sole trick would be
the sole grind. There’s also one-footed sole tricks like the
Macio which is just one foot down. A groove trick is when the skates are in the
middle of the wheels, in the middle of the frame here. So, an example is the royale with both feet
down and a little bit of a lean on your back boot. You can also do combinations of grinds. So, the combinations are generally called
switch ups. They involve starting in one position and
then changing while you’re sliding into another grinding position. You can do multiple switch ups. You can do spins in between your switch ups. As soon as you learn some standard grinds
you can also learn how to spin into and out of your grinds. So you can do Half Capsule grinds or an Alley-oop
sole grind. Which would be when you jump onto the ledge
and turn around and are grinding backwards. It’s important when you’re learning to grind
that you also get used to the balance. It’s going to feel weird at first to be on
top of an object and sliding along it. So, and each grind also has different balance
points essentially. Depending on the position that your feet are
in it’s going to take a little bit of different, it’s going to take a little bit of time for
you to get used to balancing on it. It’s also going to take you a little bit of
time to get used to bending your knees and the rest of your body into positions for certain
grinds. Some of them are going to feel a little awkward
at first. But, after a little bit of time you’ll get
used to it. And as soon as you get really comfortable
with it you can start using variations. And you can spin into and out of your tricks. There is essentially a limitless number of
possibilities with switch ups and variations.

@lolimix2006 if you start without beeing able to drive streight forwards you really need nuts… but you can also lean to drive with agressive skates but i would not recommend it

@lolimix2006 it depends i leant it in an instant because i was ice skating before it since the age of 4 or something. if i were you i would look for some 2nd hand inline skates (btw i got mine for 20 euro wich is somthing like 28 dollar which seems quite ok for me) and then buy some agressive skates. The Problem with agressive Skates is they are not really ment to use them for long distances. If i skate with them further than 1 km my feed hurt and to lean the basics you need space and time.

@o0horhey0o the fact is that every single inline skate trick… in fact is made by 2 tricks.. one done with the left foot and one with the right one (talking about grinds) with skates u can do what we cannot…and with AIS (aggressive inline skates) we can do what you can't.. respect man 😉

@LittleCodester yeah sure… for the grind you use the SoulPlate and/or the H (you can see that right in the middle of the frame)… in fact you can grind WITHOUT wheels at all XD (take care: Landing without wheels is kinda DEADLY U_U XD)

wtf i agree that grinding is a giant part of blading but blading is definitely not all about grinding, its about pushing the limits whether it be grinding, or finding yourself 25 feet in the air after jumping a gap nearly no other intense sport can do. its about flow and style, im sorry if i sound like a dick but that just caught me off guard.

I dont understand the difference between skates like his, and then the average aggressive skates on aggressivemall for example. on his skates the frame and soul seem to be attached, on the other skates, they are seperate. What are the advantages and disadvantages?

No. It's in fact a ''sole'' grind. ''Soul'' is your otherworldly spirit or some shit the jesus lovers believe. ''Sole'' is the bottom of your shoe, foot, skate etc.. Hence why it's called a SOLE grind. Dumbass.

Well you need a lil bit of balls in order to begin grinding.Just try stalling basic grinds like makio/mizou/soul on a small ledge then approach with a lil bit of speed and jump in the grind and after you feel confident come at it full speed.Looking at youtube tutorials ain't gonna teach you how to do grinds so get outta there and start practicing!

guys i would be really grateful for your advice: i had rec skates for about 2/3 years when i was young and i learned everything from basics to some really simple tricks and now after about 5 years i wanted to skate again but this time wanted to try out some grinds and spins. The problem is i dont want to focus solely on tricks but aswell be able to ride rather fast and comfortable. What would u say about fusion x3 or k2 fit 84? Or could u propose something different ? THANKS in advance

Inline Warehouse. (i'd post a link, but youtube doesn't allow that)
Google them. Make sure you go to the "Street" section of the site.
Best prices around. And right now they're having an "Everything Ships for Free" event.

I can't necessarily speak for certain brands/models of skates. But if you want speed and comfort, I'd definitely recommend a flatrocker set-up (that is, each skate has all 4 wheels touching the ground, like your rec skates). It spreads out your weight over a greater surface area giving you more speed and control. Also makes landing jumps less harsh on your feet, and your wheels don't wear out as fast as anti-rocker.

I have a question for anyone who will answer, I want a pair of skates for cruising around my neighborhood, but also for some jumps and possibly some ramps, doubtful if I would ever use rails though, I might, but doubt it. I also want them to be built durable so I don't have to buy new ones for a year or longer. So Hockey skates,Urban/freestyle skates,or aggressive? Thanks!
