three ways this backflipping black figure skater changed sports forever number three she was the first and only female figure skater to do a backflip French figure skater surya bonaly dominated figure skating in the late 80s and 90s by being the first and only woman in the sport to complete a very illegal and dangerous backflip and she's also the only person in history to pull off what they call a bonaly which involves not only a heart to do backflip but also splits in the air and the skater landing on one foot she first completed the move on broadcasted television at the 1998 Olympics it was a last resort after failing to complete her routine due to a leg injury from the day before only three other figure skaters in history have been able to do the very dangerous backflip all of them men by the way but they all landed on both feet and did not do a split in the air like bonneli though it was the first time in history anyone had seen anything like it yes even the judges Bonnie's still only made it to the tenth spot because the backflip is illegal the impressive move wasn't counted toward her score and the judges refused to make an exception despite her history-making moment number two she didn't look like other figure skaters bonaly wasn't a graceful swan in the world of figure skating like most of her opponents were and she was totally fine with that not only was she one of the few black women in Figure Skating but as her historic backflip proved she was also fiercely athletic bonneli was known for preferring athleticism over artistry she had a strong muscular figure and would always prefer harder tricks over choreography this made her unfavorable with the judges who claimed that bonaly style did not meet the figure skating criteria but often there seemed to be an undercurrent of racism and gender expectations to the critiques judges and the media waged against her even though she was wonderful and did great performances she didn't look like the ice princess former skater judge and commentator Sandra Bezeq once famously said about bonaly I'd like to see her stop jumping for six months and learn to skate Bezeq claim that bonaly did not skate figure skater because according to Pesek the sound of bonaly Skeets on the ice was quote scratchy in comparison to other judge favorites like Yuka Sato and Katya Gordeeva number three she was a total rebel remember Chazz Michael Michaels from blades of glory let's just say we wouldn't be surprised if that character was inspired by bonaly while bonaly was never as rebellious as chaz she was one of the few figure skaters at that time to speak her mind case in point her infamous 1994 World Championships second-place win resulted in bonaly refusing to stand on the podium during the medal ceremony the Bond Alize moment of protest prompted judges to believe she was a sore loser it inspired a conversation about race and gender expectations finally lost to Yuka Sato a clear favorite of the judges who represented everything bonaly wasn't an elegant feminine skater in the traditional ice princess mold the commentator from that match claim that Sato did not do as many jumps as bonaly Sato won the majority of her points for artistry while most of Bona Lee's points came from jumps and moves bonaly who now coaches in Minnesota recently told the podcast Radiolab that she does not believe her shaky figure skating career had to do with racism but she did admit that when you're black everybody knows that you have to do better than anyone else who's white share if bonaly was a total badass

Back flipping seems to be unrepeatable by any other woman skater.

The judges did not understand a new element had been invented in skating.

This video brought tears to my eyes because this beautiful woman deserved to be the winner, she deserved more than a 1st place. How could they did such a thing of placing her in a second place? But I am sure of 1 thing, she made history. Today no one remember who the others are, but everybody knows who she is.

Bonaly' athletic strength and self-confidence led her to achieve jumps very few women could even attempt, and her astonishing backflips deserve to be recognized as the breathtaking achievements they are. She is still a role model for young women (especially young black women) who want to set records with their physical strength and strength of will. Serena Williams and Surya Bonaly give today's young women athletes ideas of what to strive for.

I am livid watching this: Surya NEVER got one iota of acclaim for her jaw dropping element: ye she persevered: the historical move isn't are the scare: outrageous: furthermore she was as willowy and graceful as abyoother skating: she was NOT athletically built. I'm amazed that this racist diatribe is made: summary: Surya was not "traditional" because she was black: she was mesmerizingly elegant and then did flips and spins and tha one foot landing ;PURE AND UNADULTERATED REFUSAL TO GIVE THIS MASTERFUL, ORIGINAL BLACK WOMAN THETOP SPOT IN SKATING ANNULS JUST BECAUSE SHE WAS BLACK. We did give er flowers and told her how surreal and magnificent she was: don't know how she had the tenacity to go on with so much unveiled hatred obvious. REFUSING to consider her monumental feats!!!!

The only reason she did that backflip at a competition was because she'd screwed up earlier in her program (0:43). With a few stronger skaters yet to come, she figured her odds weren't all that great at getting on the podium. She was just signaling to the judges that she had nothing left to lose. What do you do?

Question for the Bonaly fans, why did Surya never attempt and complete a triple axel? At the time, the 3A was the most difficult jump for all skaters, men and women. If Surya wanted to win at the World and Olympic levels why would she not concentrate her athleticism on performing legal athletic jumps. At the 94 Worlds where she lost the 5-4 decision to Yuka, had Surya performed a triple axel or a 3A-2T or even 3A-3T she would have won. With her athleticism, the 3A should have been in her arsenal.

A move deemed illegal? Probably because its a move no one else can pull off.

I remember when she did the backflip. I was jealous. I can't stand on ice without landing my ass but here she is doing backflips, landing on one foot.

I'm just glad notthing ever went wrong on landing and she landed it perfectly and beautifully. She was grateful and an artist in her own unique way. Glad she didn't look like the typical figure skater. This woman had it on lock.

When they continue to say you cant do this and you cant do that, they are actually hindering the progression of the sport!! UGH Sports are dangerous that's a fact! As long as she is not trying to hurt someone else there should be no problem with finding more creativity in the game!! UGH

What I can say is that her athletic ability is extremely impressive, but there are a few things I need to point out: There is a ton of athletic ability in regular figure skating jumps, spins, and edgework. I agree that Bonaly is an impressive athlete, but you can't disrespect the work that others in the field, like "ice princess" Yuka Sato put into their programs too.

Also, the backflip is extremely impractical to add to the figure skating scoring system because of the dangers associated with it and the fact that it was in the middle of a competition. If it were to be added, then at least some competitors would probably attempt this and seriously injure themselves, and the issue of how to judge it, since it cannot really rotate more than 1 rotation and adding an entirely new jump into the judging system would have to rebalance the system.

Alongside that, adding a new element to the judging system in the middle of competition would give her an unfair advantage over the rest of the skaters, as it would basically give her extra points that no one would be able to receive, as they would not have time to train for that element or add it into the program

While I can't deny that there was probably some form of racism that put her lower in rankings, and I admire her athleticism, her backflip just does not make sense for skating competition
