JENNIFER: IN PORTLAND SPORTS, WE KNOW SOCCER MAY BE KING. BUT A LOCAL HOCKEY CLUB IS IN A LEAGUE OF ITS OWN, MAKING ITS CO-FOUNDER MY NEXT WOMEN CRUSH WEDNESDAY. AT THE WINTERHAWKS SKATING CENTER IN BEAVERTON, DOZENS OF GIRLS GET READY TO TAKE THE RINK. SKATING IS THE KEY AND THE MORE THEY CAN SKATE THE BETTER OFF THEY’LL ENJOY THIS SPORT. JENNIFER: AT THIS UNIQUE SUMMER CAMP, THE KIDS LEARN SKILLS, PLAY GAMES AND HOW TO HAVE FUN, AHEAD OF THE ROSE CITY HOCKEY CLUB’S NEW SEASON, A CLUB, ROSE KING CO-CREATED SIX YEARS AGO. IT SEEMED LIKE IF WE COULD BUILD IT, THEY WOULD COME. REPORTER: — JENNIFER: IT’S STILL THE ONLY ALL-GIRLS PROGRAM IN ALL OF OREGON. IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE IT’S THIS DAY AND AGE AND THAT’S THE CASE. JENNIFER: AND GIRLS LIKE DALIA — AND GIRLS MAKE UP THE FASTEST GROWING GROUP OF YOUTH HOCKEY ACROSS THE COUNTRY. THERE AREN’T A TON OF GIRLS IN PORTLAND AND WHEN WE SEE ONE AND WE’RE PLAYING WITH ONE, IT’S AN AUTOMATIC FRIENDSHIP. JENNIFER: SHE FIRST PICKED UP A STICK WHEN SHE WAS 11, AND IS ONE OF A FEW WHO ALSO PLAYS ON A BOYS TEAM. IT’S JUST LIKE LITTLE THINGS THAT MAKE ME WANT TO PLAY EVEN BETTER TO PROVE THAT LIKE WE ARE JUST AS GOOD AS THEM. JENNIFER: OLYMPIC MEDALIST LINDSEY FRY HELPS HAMMER THAT MESSAGE HOME. I ALWAYS TELL KIDS SUCCESS IS IN THE JOURNEY AND WHAT I LEARNED THROUGHOUT MINE WHETHER WE GOT GOLD OR SILVER REALLY DIDN’T MATTER. I’M SUPER PROUD TO HAVE THIS. THAT WAS THE DAY I DECIDED YOU KNOW, THAT’S WHAT I WANT TO BE FOR ANOTHER GIRL SO SHE CAN RETURN DREAMS. JENNIFER: SHE PLAYED ON TEAM USA IN 2014, AND NOW COACHES AT CAMPS ACROSS THE COUNTRY, LIKE IN BEAVERTON, WHERE THE LESSONS THESE LOCAL GIRLS LEARN GO FAR BEYOND THE ICE. I HAVE HAD BOXES IN MY PROFESSIONAL LIFE WHO HAVE ASKED ME OUT OF THE BLUE, DID YOU PLAY SPORTS GROWING UP? BECAUSE I CAN TELL THE WOMEN WHO HAVE PLAYED SPORTS AND WHO HAVEN’T. BECAUSE THEY UNDERSTAND LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND TEAMWORK, AND BEING A POSITIVE FORCE FOR THE GROUP. JENNIFER: A POSITIVE FORCE FOR THE GROUP. LAST YEAR, THE ROSE CITY HOCKEY CLUB PLAYED SO WELL, TWO OUT OF THREE TEAMS WON THEIR DIVISION AT THE BIGGEST ALL GIRLS HOCKEY TOURNAMENT IN CANADA. HOCKEY IS ALSO EXPENSIVE, BUT THE CLUB LOANS GEAR EVERY YEAR FOR FREE, AND THERE ARE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS AVAILABLE. IF YOU THINK YOUR GIRL MAY BE INTERESTED. AND IF SHE IS OR YOU ARE AS A PARENT, THERE IS TIME TO SIGN UP FOR THIS YEAR’S SEASON WHICH STARTS SEPTEMBER 9. WE PUT ALL THE LINKS UP IN THIS STORY UNDER SPECIAL REPORTS ON KOIN.COM, WHERE YOU CAN ALSO NOMINATE ANOTHER WOMEN CRUSH WEDNESDAY LIKE ROSE, WHO’S HELPING TO BREAK GLASS CEILINGS AND INSPIRE OTHERS. DAN: VERY EMPOWERING. OREGON REPRESENTATIVE SUZANNE
