– My name’s Geoff Rowley and
I’m from Liverpool, England. How’s that? Is that humble enough? You want more humble? – [Interviewer] You’re a skateboarder. – Oh, I’m a skateboarder too. (Punk music playing) – So before we get rolling, I just want it to be made clear that I am pretty beaten up today. I’ve been filming this weekend and it went really, really well, but at the grand age of 42, I woke up feeling like I’d
been in a car accident, so we’ll start right there. Which is actually, quite present for what we’re about to talk about. Because this was before I
felt any pain. (laughing) So it was end of 1998, early 1999, and I was skating a lot. Searching for spots everywhere. Constantly out on the streets, just looking for gnar,
like gnar everywhere. I wanted the biggest, longest, everything I could find, the highest. And so I was skating up and
in downtown L.A. quite a lot. And they built the
Staples Center, alright. And I was driving along the freeway, right where you can see downtown
L.A. to right hand side. And there was just this kind of wasteland, with this big new kind of
structure that was built with a huge staircase that went most of the way ’round the building, with these massive, big, I wouldn’t call them hand rails, they were like neck rails. It’s shoulder height that thing. This is unreal. And I remember looking at it, going I can’t get, I
can’t ollie that high. There’s no way I can get onto it. And I remember giving it the golf-look, you know you get down on the ground, you look straight and you
go “if I ollie 10 stairs, I’m gonna land on the ledge right there.” And that was it. And back then I used to shoot everything with Daniel Harold Sturt. He was a photographer and he shot all the first couple of years of Vans ads for me and many more after that. And he’ll hate that I’m
talking about him right now, but I don’t care. The truth needs to be said. So I met Dan at the
spot, I remember the day, and I remember he looked at it and went, like, I honestly looked him in the face and he went “Yeah, this
isn’t happen, what, huh?” It didn’t make any sense for the spot, and so we set the cameras
up and everything like that, but what I didn’t tell Dan that day was I invited somebody else to come and shoot. His name was Thomas Campbell. So we hid him in the bushes, with a 16 mil camera. Nobody else there and so, fuck it, I had to just
basically walk back and go “I’m just gonna go as fast as I can, and see if I can get my trucks where I visualized me landing.” You know, that was it. It was terrifying. And anyway, anyway. Skated it, got the trick, I remember there was a
load of construction guys there and stuff, and they were all like fricking waving their stuff
up all psyched and everything. And anyway, so that ended
up being the first photo, that was my first ad for Vans, and I had Made in USA arrows on that day. Anyway, long story short, Thomas filmed that stuff from the bush. We all left, and no one
even knew Thomas was there, except for me. Thomas transfers all the footage, and then we took Ace of Spades, we overlaid that on the top and that was the first video commercial. And I remember, like, that was gateway. It opened up the door for a lot more of like the basic tricks that
I could do, do ’em bigger. (Punk music playing)
