Donner ski ranch California former world areal ski champion Frankie Bear is building a jump that will put an end to one upmanship in the art of performing somersaults on skis today Frankie will attempt the all-time trick a maneuver so difficult that it has never been completed in any sport the weather conditions are perfect and the landing Hill is being softened for the impact of the jump I asked Frankie about what constitutes a successful jump on skis just what will you accept as a completed trick there is no true completion of a maneuver unless you put it down just exactly what is it the trick will be four flips with three full twists and to this day it has never been done ok I understand you're gonna take a couple warm-up jumps what's your first warm-up jump gonna be well I'm gonna warm up since his jump is so big it's quite a large one we are only warming up with double twisting triple backs Frank has been working out on a trampoline for four months preparing for today but this will be his first actual jump on snow three back somersaults with two twists and Frank bear skis away from a double twisting triple as we look at it again in slow motion Frank seems to be totally relaxed at all times he's been a natural gymnast since birth and he knows exactly where he is every moment that he's in the air Oh Frank that was some kind of warm-up jump just exactly how did it go I was landing well it felt pretty good um it's just softening up right now you know this morning was a little er a little little hard and we waited a little bit now it's getting softer that good air feel like if I step up a little bit higher on the inrun which is that you know the gaming into the jump here that I can get some good enough height to pull around a quad it'll have to be really quick and I'll have to be a lot of Drive um other than that it felt good felt like I had a real good driver so basically this is gonna be an attempt at the all-time acrobatic of maneuver this isn't an attempt I'm gonna put my feet down on this triple twisting quad I'm gonna land it every movement has been replayed in his mind's eye again and again Frank's plan is to start higher than he did for the triple get more speed more height and bend his knees slightly for faster rotation the critical point will come after he finishes three flips and two twists it is then he must judge his height off the snow and make a split-second decision on whether to float out of three or go for four one two three he's going for four and he does it Frankie bear skis away from the world's first triple twisting quadruple and at a closer look we see Frankie come off of the jump completes his first somersault and begins his first twist he's now completed two flips in one twist and he's still rising here's the critical point at the apex of the jump after three somersaults and two twists he sees he has enough height and uses all of it for the last twisting flip he spots the landing and knows that he hasn't made the perfect execution on his first try at the world's first triple quad that's Frankie there

I knew Frank and Bruce and a bunch of those guys. Frankie did a back flip out of a helicopter at Snowbird on camera once. He was a really nice guy and we trained at the same place in UT.

Butt check, hands down – that would be a failure by today's standards.

The reason not a single pro can do this today is the size of the jump and the angle of the kick. This jump is way bigger then thoose they use at big air competitions

this is actually a triple … if you watch carefully you will see he only flips under 3 times … not a quad flip

Image how many flips he could do if he made himself small instead of stretching himself out. These jumps are terrible steep. A quad cork has now been landed on snowboard. But on a normal shaped jump.

Over 30 years ago. Balls the size of grapefruits. You go Frank. Thanks for paving the way. Willing to bet if you were 19 years old today, you'd be shoving "Misty 720's with a safety grab D-spin mute grab whatever" right up some of those helmet-wearing new-schooler's asses. And boarders…  hah, not even on the map.
