The Ryde Area ice rink closed its doors back in October 2016 when bailiffs were sent in by the landlord to change the locks. The site was being run by a local community group “Ryde Arena Ltd” who managed to save the site from initial closure back in 2015.
The site remained open for 18 months before the landlord terminated the lease locking the community group out, as they had fallen into rent arrears. Despite the council condemning the actions of the Landlord and a large community push to have the site reopened the building has remained empty resulting in the islands own hockey team
and youth teams being forced to fold after the closure of the arena a new
community group was formed called the “Ryde Arena Community Action Group” who
managed to get the site listed as an Asset of Community Value which prevents the Landlord disposing of the site without giving community groups a chance to bid for it, The Landlord marketed the Arena at £3.5 million which massively exceeded an independent surveyors valuation of £750,000. This video was
filmed on two separate trips and no damage was caused gaining entry or
during either visit. Access was made through a noticeably open door on the
outside of the building and this entry point remained open for well over a
month, amazingly during this period no one got in and caused any damage as
despite the building being kitted out with live motion sensors
and all the lights being turned on the alarm was turned off! I wouldn’t usually go into details of
access, however, I wanted to highlight just how easy it was to gain entry and
how on both trips, which were several weeks apart no effort had been made to
secure the site and I think highlights just how the building is being neglected
by the landlord. The property is leased to the landlord company by the Isle of Wight Council who owned the land that the property sits on, it would be nice if the council could somehow intervene as the site had huge community value and is already beginning to show signs of decay Unfortunately if no action is
taken it will not be long before Ryde Arena becomes yet another sad empty
building beyond saving and lost forever Video and Music created by Vectis Video Productions 2018

Sad sight, remember playing there in about 1994 with a packed house, complete sell out, loads of sponsorship, cars driving on the ice in between periods, sad to see things not working out.

Excellent video! The arena would be perfect for the radio control car clubs, or some drone racing!

Man, I enjoy watching your videos and exploring these places vicariously through them. But at the same time, each new video breaks away another piece of my childhood. It'll be years before I'll ever be able to go back to the island and I dread to think what it will be like then.

Nice one mate. I completely agree with you about the access, something that I have also thought for a while. Also the more damage there is, the better the argument to tear it down.

Thank you for creating awareness of the situation, it is such a shame for the young people who enjoyed the arena. I have just subscribed and look forward to catching up with your other videos.

You did show the ice but not in close detail. Was it still frozen and slippery or was it melted and ruined?

Having lived here since 1984 a lot has changed. Lots falling in to decay, apparently the Eden Project was refused permission to come here. It's almost like the island is deliberately being allowed to fall into decay and become a no mans land. My question is why?

Another great video!! I really wanted to see inside here to see what it was like! I'm not a fan of ice skating myself, but I have been there a few times.
It would be a shame to just let the building sit there and rot, but then again, the backstory is quite interesting! :/
Love the music!! Can you post a link for it??

According to my friend, who was in one of the skating teams, the motion sensors or security alarm, didn't ever work properly. So even when the site was in use, they still did not turn them on.

Have you explored in the old town hall theatre in Ryde? I live right opposite it and I'm always wondering what's in it! There's also an abandoned con club that looks like something from the Adams family- no idea how you'd get in it though

Typical of the UK to allow such a great facility for local people to go into disrepair! Can you imagine? What the hell is going on in this country? See all authorities do is take take take, council tax and nothing gets put back anymore! An absolute disgrace then they wonder why young uns end up doin drugs the F***rs! This is what people in charge do to you ie the decision makers! Great eh?!! Surely someone with a backbone can take control or are we totally lost? Who is this landlord and why hasnt he been kicked into touch?

First, I love your videos! Just discovered them, great editing. You're a natural! My family lived and still lives on the island. I lived in Ryde when I was 6 but now live in Canada. I had no idea that the arena closed down!! I had some great times in there. Keep up the good work. The island is a time capsule and I can't wait to go back with my own family.
