Narrator: Warner Bros. released the first trailer for “Joker,” an origin story about
Batman’s most famous foe, starring Joaquin Phoenix. There’s a lot of references to movies and the original comic books alike. Here’s everything you might have missed. In the first shot, we see Arthur
Fleck, not in clown makeup, meeting with a social
worker named Debra Kane. Kane was also featured in the comic “Batman: The Ultimate Evil.” Bruce Wayne uses her as an informant to investigate a pedophile ring. We see Fleck sitting in a room
working on a sheet of jokes. As we see later in the trailer, this Joker is an aspiring comedian. In the Batman story “The Killing Joke,” The Joker is also portrayed as a struggling stand-up comedian. The Joker: I got nervous
and blew a punchline. Narrator: If you take a
close look at the notebook, you can see that The Joker’s material pulls from his real life. There’s references to mental illness, insomnia, and poverty. It’s important to note that
this is a comic book movie heavily inspired not just
by the source material, but also by a lot of movies. The filmmakers have stated
that their intention was not just to make a DC movie but rather one that looks a lot like a Martin Scorsese movie. The movie is set in Gotham in 1981, and the look of it seems pulled from the 1970s and 1980s New
York, as you can see from the shots of the street,
the cars, and the subway. Martin Scorsese’s 1976
masterpiece, “Taxi Driver,” also takes place in this setting. In the movie, Robert De Niro plays insomnia-stricken Vietnam
war veteran Travis Bickle, who rides the city streets at night and plunges into unimaginable darkness. In one of the movie’s most
famous lines, Bickle says, Travis Bickle: There’s no escape. I am God’s lonely man. Narrator: Warner Bros. described “Joker” as an exploration of a
man disregarded by society that is not only a character study but also a broader cautionary tale. This scene with Arthur on a date is also reminiscent of
Travis Bickle’s scenes with Cybill Shepherd before he melts down. The other Scorsese movie
this pulls heavily from is 1982’s “The King of Comedy.” In that dark comedy, De
Niro plays Rupert Pupkin, a man so obsessed with becoming a comedian that he kidnaps his
favorite talk show host in order to finally get himself on TV. In “King of Comedy,” Pupkin
lives with his mother, and in “Joker,” it appears
Fleck does as well. His mother is played by Frances Conroy, who also appeared in the
2004 movie “Catwoman.” Later in the trailer, we see The Joker greet a TV audience on a set that looks a lot like the one
from “The King of Comedy,” and the host of that
show appears to be played by none other than Robert De Niro. It also appears that
The Joker is inspiring a lot of rabid, violent followers. The twist at the end
of “The King of Comedy” is that, despite Pupkin landing in prison, he becomes a beloved,
if infamous, celebrity. The movie references go
all the way back to 1936. We see Fleck getting
kicked out of a screening of the silent Charlie Chaplin
classic “Modern Times” at a building called Wayne Hall. The trailer is also partially scored by a remix of the Chaplin song “Smile.” At one point we hear him say, The Joker: My mother
always tells me to smile. Narrator: And let’s not forget one of The Joker’s most famous lines from “The Dark Knight.” The Joker: Let’s put a smile on that face. Narrator: At one point,
we see Arkham Asylum, which plays an integral role
in the “Batman” universe, particularly with its villains. At one point, we see
The Joker greet a child. This appears to be a young Bruce Wayne. Could this be leading to The Joker murdering Wayne’s parents? The murder of Bruce’s parents pops up in almost every “Batman” movie. In the 1989 “Batman,” in which Jack Nicholson plays The Joker, The Joker is the one
who commits the crime. This isn’t always the
case, but we’re wondering if that’s what this movie is leading to. Similarly, Arthur’s attacked in an alley just as Bruce Wayne’s parents were. Thomas Wayne, Bruce Wayne’s dad, even appears briefly in this shot on TV. The Joker’s makeup towards the end is similar to the mask
worn by the protesters earlier in the trailer, and he is seen dyeing his hair green, just like the wig he wears
while working in the streets. Oh, and we finally get to hear this new Joker’s trademark laugh. Narrator: Did you notice
anything we didn’t? Let us know in the comments.

Imma be honest, I never had an interest with the previous Jokers, my dad always loved the Joker.

But this one gave me a feeling of reality in it, with the villain's point of view. I guess people loved Joaquin's Joker because it shows the more of the human in him. I am not saying there is no humanity in the previous Jokers, but this incoming movie, in my opinion, shows the raw emotion. Which gave me an interest, Joaquin's Joker made me become interested.

BTW, dad wanted me to draw Joker and I couldn't pick one so imma pick Joaquin's.

DC has always done "dark" stories better than "bright" ones. The Vertigo titles are an excellent example. I might be a snob, but if they'd start aiming for an adult audience more often, they'd probably go much further…

Just a theory, but I think this Joker is the father of the Heath Ledger Joker. The first story he tells about how he got his scars was the true one. That his father after beating and killing his mom, cut his face.

Spoiler: I think the Joker is working so he can pay for his Mother's mental treatment and stay at this Hospital Care Facility which is owned by the Wayne Foundation. As the City grows the Wayne Foundation needs a larger building to handle the Health Care of the City's ever growing population and decides to break ground on a new sight and begins the construction of the Gotham City Hospital which will replace the older facility. During the Jokers visits to see his Mother he begins to notice the changes taking place all around him as he watches patient after patient being rolled in that appear to be dealing with Mental Issues far greater then his Mothers and worst of all these patients are criminals, evil criminals who have done some terrible Crimes. During his last visit The JOKER is giving a strong look from one of the facility's workers and he replies "What" he is then told his Mother is being discharged do to the facility being turned into a Psychiatric Hospital for the Criminally Insane. This catches The Joker completely by surprise do to his lack of mail reading and he is quickly brought up to speed and told that the Hospital is being closed and reopened as a new treatment facility and his mother would have to leave. Time passes and The Joker has moved his Mother into his Appartment where he watches over her and becomes her main care giver. On T.V. we see Thomas Wayne at the grand opening of his New Gotham General Hospital, he cuts the ribbon to let people in just as he ties the ribbon to keep people out of his New Arkham Asylum. Some time later the worst possible scenario for Author plays its hand, The Joker returns home and finds his mother as been murdered, this is the breaking point that transformes Aurther into The Joker. As The Plan starts taking effect The Joker who by now is a Kite loose in the Wind blames Thomas Wayne for his Mothers death, it was greed for money that caused Wayne to close the hospital if he hadn't of done this The Jokers Mother would still be there under the care of people who actually cared about her as much as he did, if Wayne took his Mother from him he would take his Son from Wayne. Other thoughts, I also see The Joker knowing every hidding spot and secret passage in the Arkham Asylum, since the Joker literally lived there when it was a Hospital he would create secret passage ways through out the building which allowed him to skip over the Hospitals Visiting Hours and spend more time with his Mother after visit I g hours were over, The Joker also created secret rooms where he would sleep and spend time watching over his Mother all the while learning more about the Hospital Staff that worked there. The Joker would also stock pile Medicine for his Mother that he would steal and administer himself during the times when work was slow and he didnt have the money to buy the medicine out right. Included with the Medicine stockpiles were also Surgical Tools that he would steal after hours when no one was around including guards, it was during these times that made The Joker feal alive, as if he owned the Hospital and it was his personal playground as he ran through the halls still dressed as a Clown from Work helping all the patients who were also in the same situation with money. The Joker learned so many medical practices that dealt with medicine, broken bones, surgey and connections, all of these Medical Traits he learned while bidding out in the Hospital would save the Jokers life on many occasions after his many duels with The Batman. The Joker would later state that the entire time that Batman and his Team were searching for him they never bothered to look in the one place he had been hidding the entire time, Arkham Asylum.

The building hallway he's walking through with flowers may be a foreshadowing of another piece of The Killing Joke. He may be on the way to Barbara Gordon's apartment (or maybe someone different based on the time frame) where, in the graphic novel, he shoots and paralyzes her in an attempt to get Commissioner Gordorn to understand that it only takes one incident to drive someone insane. This may be the act that Wayne is referring to on the television. Again the time frame would be mixed up based on the age of the characters, but it seems pretty obvious that the movie changing the story up a bit.

    Revisionist history:

Batman IS the bad guy, as he fights to maintain the social order of wealthy elites in failed trickle down economics!

And “villains” like the Joker are pushing back at social oppression and growing social inequality. Introducing chaos threatens wealthy elites the most, and therefore joker is force of good with justifiably evil means, while Batman’s good deeds to justify his brutal force are a moral facade.

This movie looks depressing and entertaining. I'm guessing the movie will end with the Joker being directly or indirectly involved with the murder of Bruce Wayne's parents, but I hope not. I hope the movie has more wit than that. The Joker should be an anti-villain sort of like how Batman is an anti-hero. The Joker should be the anti-villain who uses chaos and humor to rebel against an unfair, decadent, self-serving, self-righteous, and narcissistic establishment. Then the Joker realizes resistance is not enough, because an overthrow is necessary, and then comes the maintenance of perpetual anarchy, but that results in blowback for everyone, including Bruce Wayne's parents.

For example, Joker respects the Wayne family's charities and well-run corporations, thus, the Joker attacks other wealthy people's assets. A highly corrupt plutocrat/autocrat incorrectly believes the Joker secretly works for the Wayne family, thus, the corrupt oligarch covertly manipulates and commutes an imprisoned patsy (eg, reward is money for the patsy's wife and kids) to find and kill Bruce Wayne's parents. The Joker visits a mourning and adolescent Bruce Wayne, and advises the teenager to seek alternative means of executing justice in a world entrenched in corruption and incompetence.

The Joker didn't kill Bruce Wayne's parents, Joe Chill did. The Joker's hair didn't turn green because he dyed it. It turned green because he fell into a vat of chemicals while being chased by Batman.
