hey folks is a ray from DC ray maker we're here in beautiful days arc in the French Alps doing a bit of recording and testing out of the DJI phantom4 now in all fairness is actually the third time we've tried this the first two times sort of succeeded we got the aircraft in the air it followed me for about ten yards so the first time and the good news is we're learning a lot from this the very first time what happened was that we were too close so we put the aircraft out just a short distance there and I basically kind of overtook it too fast in the second time we didn't complete a complete circle around me and that's something that really helps to recognize me as a as a person which is what we're here for we're testing Auto track so you've seen some my drone videos in the past where I go ahead and have a small transponder or a transmitter on my person and then it goes ahead and follows that down with the Phantom 4 the way it works as it actually follows me or in theory follows me anyways by recognizing me as an object so the way we do that is we go ahead and tap on the screen and choose me and we go ahead and basically build this recognition of what I look like so in the second time we did do a full loop around me so as I headed down it got to a different angle and it kind of lost what it looked like so we're gonna do that here in a second so what's going to go on so I'm going to hand this over to David as soon as I take off the drone we're taking off by hand simply because the grounds not level here in the bag is introducing some interference once that's done I'm just going to put it out there a little bit give it to him and he's going to go ahead and enable the active track on me and I'm gonna ski down we're gonna see how things go hopefully third time's a charm if not then we pretty much give up so with that here we go okay so it's up I move it over here and move it back a bit okay there we go at this point I'm going to hand it over David using a reactor track all enabled and get ready to roll you out there a little bit so it you can distinguish you for me okay so what I'm doing is I'm going to hit the little button here looks like a remote control then I hit active track then I click on Ray it says aircraft to low so I'll take the aircraft up a little tiny bit now it says okay so I'm gonna hit so do I turn right before after look before I do it okay so now I'll do a loop subject out of range okay all right so we go I hit okay okay right off you go race on it lost you okay it's got you try again yeah so you see it lost him there when he got too tiny now it thinks that it's a limited staff so doesn't fly into anything fly back to me okay so you saw me go ahead and go down that hill here now to give some perspective on how long on how high that is the watch has me at about six hundred feet from the top of the lift so about two hundred meters now we start a little below that so looking at maybe 150 meters of vertical descent and it has me at about a third of a mile from the top of lifts and a little bit below that again so we're talking maybe three or four hundred meters tops in terms of distance outbound if that not even that probably and it struggled a little bit towards the end and one of the reasons is because with the Phantom 4 what's happening is it's tracking me is that object as opposed to a transmitter on me so as I go down it has to stay level because it's not following my altitude downwards so eventually just get so far away that it can't see what I am anymore and you saw a track onto that trainer as opposed to me now obviously I don't look anything like the tree I'm in bright red it's in green so that's kind of limitations of the tracking systems that phantom 4 I know don't get me wrong the Phantom 4 is an awesome drone for everything else on earth except for tracking sports and action so if you are going to head out and do that I'd recommend first making sure you play with it a bit and understanding some limitations that we talked about earlier in terms of distance and doing a loop around the person and then just be aware that's really a two-person operation so David is helping me out do this you have to leave the remote somewhere you can't take that with you so one of the other challenges as well so with that thanks for watching to keep tuned for more videos on sports to action cams as well as drones

So can another person during this kind of shooting do manual lower altitude in order to keep the distance while skiing down hill? If i start follow mode with circles around me and start skiing i would like the drone to follow me but i want it to drop the altitude as i go down so i remain the same size in the frame… that is the only reason i would buy this drone but i was not able to find is this possible or not?

C'est beaucoup trop haut une fois l'active track activer pour ce genre de poursuite il faut pas envoyer le drone a 100 mètres de haut un bon 25 metres aurais eu un rendu excellent. Je teste en février 😉

It's now November 2018 and the active track is not noticeably better – still pretty unusable. Only the Skydio R1 comes close to being able to actively track. I think this will eventually happen but we may have to wait a bit longer for the drone AI to improve. In the meantime the flight restrictions, regulations…etc is fast making it very very difficult to fly drones in any ski resorts……

Thank you very much for the video, revealing the biggest drawback of DJI drones!
Very disappointed with DJI that does not allow drone to descent below starting elevation level…So its actually not able to follow the object… 🙁
    DJI – Bullshit!!!

Total case of user error. They didn’t use the secondary settings at all and you can keep the remote with you.

Have you tried launching the Phantom from the bottom of the mountain up to where you launch from? That way it would desend with you.

The main problem here are the height differences, otherwise the Phantom 4 works great!

Looks like he just ski’d outside its view range and it lost him. Major flaw needs correcting.

why why is it so high ? Cant it just go down near you like 5 meters and following you ? Changing spot positions all around you while still tracking you very close, low altitude ??
