Ah one two, ah one two Ah one two, ah one two Breakadawn.. breakadawn Ah one two, ah one two Breakadawn.. breakadawn Ah one two, ah one two Breakadawn.. breakadawn Ah one two, ah one two Breakadown.. breakadawn Ah one two, ah one two Breakadown.. breakadown Ah one two, ah one two [Verse 1: Posdonus]
I was born in the Boogie Down catscan
where my building fell down on the rats and people sorta super wanna trip to the penile (penile)
While I settle off the shores of the Long Isle My father’s clean not mean my mind is clear when I transmit
I am the man-ner of the family cuz the pants fit I want to let forensics prove, that I can mends
Groove wit the thread from needle outta hay, wanna say salutations to the nation of the Nubians
We bout to place you in that (3 Feet) of stew again
I got the frequency to shatter Mrs. Jones’ perm I gotta (Hey Love) all the honies cause they’re short term
Tallyin the score I’m for the shottie in the jacket For the brother he’s a nigga when he packs it
So get your butt out the sling, I stung Muhammad float a note
that means I’m def, so like the autographs you sign until the “Breakadawn.. breakadawn..”
Ah one two, ah one two [x4] Aiyyo groove with the mayor, hazard on the sayer
Wave the eighteen mill’, eat a still
sack or bag of troubles, make the single double Loop the coin and join the minimum wage
I had a plan if I was the man, I’d throw the J Lay it low and late night I get sessed
Uncondition my ways, of the everyday sunset Wagin my days, to the one bet
Cause your breaks’ll have the carrot of cakes, whether mine
Out of line, I breeze into the early mornin Freak the WIC call and get a tap on my shoulder
cause the days of the breaks, be just about over The arts of the six won’t play my bag of tricks
I got the sevens in my pocket somewhere
Reasons for the Cheer All Temperature here I keep it to the rear, and then I’m EXPLODING I be the fab I be the fabulous but see unlike the Chi
I got the flea up in the name “ah one two, ah one two” Can’t no one bend my cousin from the Peter Piper like the others
latchin on to when I caught the fame “ah one two, ah one two” Pass the task to ask me bout the Native Tongue again my friend
I tell you Jungle Brothers (On the Run) “ah one two, ah one two” I’m shakin hands with many devils in the industry
Believe the Genesis life fill with stills mean that I’m def
so like the autographs you sign until the “Breakadawn.. breakadawn..”
Ah one two, ah one two [x4] We in the mornin at the end, but in the end I be the is
cause in the mix, man, it’s alright Momma got the rhythm to my daylife My pops gots enough so best to leave or sail the waves
to the Long I laid the anchor in the ‘Ville
And how I relate, the same side of my gates Paper days, mess up my mind, ground zero degrees
and the weather feels fine You opened my eyes man, thought I had a man
But how could I eyescan, I wasn’t around
I seen the states and played the dates in the far-far Gathered the new, from the zoas around
Grew old with Mikey Rodes and played the codes Sometimes I don’t budge, without my cous’ Fuzz/fuzz
A simple, “How ya do?” Ah check it from my friends and my crew makes it definitely special Now there’s no (Shiny Happy People) in the crew we play the rough
I got the huff, and puff, to blow the house low You know the neverending factor while I’m over, tell a squid
I know an Enterprising brother, so report to the bridge I bounce a ball with my left, a squid with my right
(Cause a squid is just a punk) Yo he deserved to lose the fight I might meander ‘cross your dream, travellin up the stream
Plug Wonder Wonder Why you’re lonely tonight We see the girls scream as if we’re shocked by the live shell
Let’s round em up and get em back to the hotel motel, holiday, inn-fact!
I’m gonna let you know, once again, that De La Soul
is sure to show you we will hit the charter harder
than the normal rappin fool “ah one two, ah one two”

One of the illest, dopest, sickest beats ever on any Hip Hop track. 1993 was such a solid year for Hip Hop. You had Wu Tang dropping their debut album Enter The 36 Chambers, Digible Planets "Reaching for Time and Space", Cypress Hill "Black Sunday", A Tribe Called Quest "Midnight Marauders", De La Soul "Buhloone Mindstate", Naughty By Nature "19 Naughty III", Onyx "BackdafucUp", 2 Pac "Strickly 4 My Niggaz", Souls of Mischief "93 til infinity", Snoop Dogg "Doggystyle" etc.

Whatever happened to Tommy Boy Records being a dope label? Y'all actually trash; You need to support De La Soul. This is just modern slavery? I hate to bring it up like that, but wtf is wrong with Tommy Boy Records? Less than 20% royalties to De La Soul??
    FACTS:
    Tommy Boy Records enables cheap as labor;
    Tommy Boy Records enables other labels to fuck over Artist(s);
Tommy Boy Records does not respect and care about the Artist(s) nor do they respect their consumers.

Hey Tommy Boy, rise from hell and be a good label. Whoever these greedy, nasty fucks are, ruining the label: grab them and boot they ass out the building (preferably out of a high as building at the top floor). Tommy Boy fucked over and cracked De La Souls head, why cant we crack Tommy Boy Records head??? Show some fuckin respect Tommy Boy Records, you greedy, slimy, ass fuckin elephants. So damn tired of this shit happening to Artist. I cant even support them because Tommy Boy is a Fucked up company. Shoot yo self; greedy ass white people… smh.

To play the devil's advocate, I started off being on De La's side when it comes to this matter but the truth is, they are not telling the whole story when it comes to this issue. They went to social media about this because they were unhappy with the deal, so Tommy agreed to renegotiate the terms. But as it turns out, De La did not want a better deal than the 90/10 split, they flat out want the masters handed to them for complete ownership. Here's the problem, Tommy Boy was the one backing them the entire time since De La signed with them. They gave them the budget and paid for all expenses to promote and release their music.

Moving on to 2002, De La still remained with them but then Tommy Boy was discontinued as a label and Warner Bros acquired their catalog. De La moved on with their careers and then came the digital era of downloads and streaming. Warner had all of De La's Tommy Boy albums in the vault and didn't release them on iTunes and other platforms because they were uncertain about the contracts used to clear the samples and according to De La themselves, they refused to deal with it because they thought it would be costly. So for all these years, De La's old stuff has been unavailable and Warner made no effort to rectify the issue. De La even posted them on their website for free in 2014 because they realized that it's a dire situation and people are kind of forgetting about them because the music is not immediately available online. They go on interviews and talk about how they just want fans to be able to access the music.

Fast forward to 2017 and Tommy Boy get their catalog back from Warner and in addition to re-releasing all their other music on digital, they go to work on De La's albums to remaster everything for a digital release. So far so good, even Posdnuos was on his instagram telling fans that the albums will be released "soon" a year in advance. Finally we reached the 30 year anniversary of their debut album and Tommy Boy was set to release their catalog until De La decided to go on social media and complain about the contract and the deal they were getting. They latched on to anything they could use to paint Tommy Boy as the devil.

But I listened to their interviews with Sway and N.O.R.E. and they are dramatizing the situation to make themselves look like the victims. They complain about the 90/10 split but then acknowledge that they have a 2 million dollar debt that was not recouped from the amount Tommy Boy invested on them. At the same time, they say "it would've been paid off if the music had been available all these years". They sound very dishonest here because they are well aware that Tommy Boy didn't own the masters so they had no chance of putting the music up so the 2 millions would be paid off. Now they have the chance to make that happen with the music finally going up and instead they're looking for a handout. Maseo said very clearly that he wants to own the catalog. No if's and's or but's about it, he stated that EXPLICITLY. But again, Tommy Boy doesn't have any reason to just hand it over to them unless they are willing to buy it for the price it would be valued at.

At this point, they're spiting themselves with this move. For years, they complained that Warner wouldn't put the music up but now when Tommy Boy wanted to do that, they decided to start making demands about the contract and music ownership. I consider that biting the hand that feeds you. Yes, the contract is not in their favor but they should've thought about it when they signed it. Ultimately, I think having your music accessible to fans helps you much more long term than trying to get ownership by campaigning on social media and get nowhere because you're a choosing beggar. I don't see Naughty by Nature or Coolio going on twitter to beg fans to not play their music because Tommy Boy should give them the masters. For another example, Scarface has expressed his regrets over what he was paid in Rap-a-Lot for record sales (this one being an independent black owned label too!) but not once has he whined about it.

De La even admit that Tommy are legally entitled to do as they please or else they could've sued the label for not getting paid. And on that note, plenty of disputes between labels and artists take place regularly, the difference is it gets handled behind closed doors and we find out about it after the fact via a third party news site (see Death Row selling The Chronic online without Dr. Dre getting compensated). De La Soul are being unprofessional, whiny crybabies that hope to get what they want if they throw enough tantrums on instagram. If they had kept their heads and let the situation play out, they may have seen the benefits and later even gotten the chance to have ownership over their music in the near future on good terms. But as it stands, the situation is damaged unless they act their age and accept the terms they had agreed to from the beginning.
