now that we have the history videos over there let's talk about something current the Washington Capitals and their current roster as it most likely is data and this is this is arranged by cap hat so this is arranged by cap hit not by points or by who's gonna play where so that way you know when people in the comment section are saying you got everybody out of order we can point out I did it by cap hat um who's gone for next year's roster will Connolly ended up moving on he's gone to Florida 22 goals 24 assists I believe it's a career year I think he'll he'll probably get about 15 next year but we'll see again people point out hey his points for sixty minutes are pretty good and he just needed an opportunity got that this year in Washington fine point taken we'll see what happens this season birkhoff's key 12 goals 13 assists he had to go it was not working between he and the caps he moves on maybe caret maybe Colorado got a huge steal maybe they didn't we will know pretty darn soon either way that drama has gone from the Capitals madness Canon got moved in kind of a surprise trade for Radko Judas the thing is well you can look at that goal in this cannons the better offensive defenseman Judas actually had a pretty good year four goals and 16 assists for him which was pretty darn good and niskanen eight goals in 17 assists I remember early in the season and scrolling out and scrolling out who was the leading scorers on each team that Goudas showed up in the leading scorers for Philly while ghosts didn't and it was weird and it was that way for a while so gunas had a pretty good start and it'll be interesting to see how he does for the Capitals this year or pick up courses retired or pick played a diminished role compared to his his his better days and so they're gonna miss him in the locker room but I think they can absorb that with some of the other pieces they have coming the one thing that stands out to me with with the Capitals is that oh she backs terminal vets Kenard all over the age of 30 now Ovechkin has shown no signs of falling off the mark or you know showing his age at all eventually it does happen Backstrom 22 goals 52 it says 74 points pretty solid season for him overall course Ovechkin had 51 goals and 38 assists Ovechkin signed for two more years Kuznetsov signed for quite a while until 2025 he had 21 goals and 51 assists 72 points and of course Kuznetsov capable scoring more than that I would not be surprised to see him score 30 this year Backstrom he's a free agent next summer what is he worth at age 32 which shall be next summer how much term do you give him how much money do you give him they've already got oshi at 32 years of age assigned through 2025 that contracts too long uh he had 69 games played 25 goals 29 assists 54 points oh she does get injured regularly it's the way he plays the game there's a recklessness to his game and you know III know Capps fans are gonna point out what happened in that series against Carolina and all that was an ugly hit and uh you know what on that in that situation yes it was kind of an ugly hit agreed but at the same time oh she doesn't seem to protect himself out there he he's kind of Russian all over the ice which is great when he's scoring but it does lead to some injuries Wilson of course one of the most unpopular players in the National Hockey League 63 games played this past season 22 goals 18 assists 40 points he's signed till 2024 and he's 25 years of age so he's honestly in his prime right now this coming season could be offensively his best 26 years of age settling in as a power forward and if he can avoid suspension then you've got something there Lars Eller 30 years of age 2023 he is signed until 13 goals 23 assists for eller he's a perfect third line center he can fill in in top six if he needs to and any C's kind of a guy who could do a little bit of everything so eller very useful to them Virata 23 years of age he signed for two more years 82 games 24 goals 23 says 47 points and I believe he's still to free agent at the end of that Ranas part of this the young corps that's kind of sorted there but one thing that stands out for me with Washington is they need to win now because they've been a good team for a long time eventually good teams need to do a rebuild Washington's not that far off so I'm expecting this season to see some kind of sense of urgency especially when it comes to playoff time for the Capitals they've got Hagelin 30 years of age she plays till he signed he'll 2023 he had 20 games three goals eight assists 11 points after the trade where he arrived in Washington I'm not worried about his stats before that's looking in stats on Washington they added Richard ponic he's 28 years of age signed to 2023 he had 14 goals 19 assists for Arizona so since it's Arizona where they struggle to score you got to think that's 20 goals in Washington more scoring's a little bit easier and they're not just playing that defensive style so adding panic kind of offsets losing connelly Hathaway 76 games played 11 goals 8 assists 19 points he's 27 years of age sign through 2023 and he adds some more sandpaper on a team that already had a bunch the Capitals this offseason seemed to have gone you know we're really not well-liked with Wilson let's add a bunch more jerks to that Carolina had the bunch of jerks thing added because of Don cherry we just like to be jerks because everybody thinks for jerks so they seem to go out and get as many as they could that said Hathaway had a good year calgary's gonna miss him and Washington I think is gonna love garnet Hathaway his game Travis Boyd 25 years of age played 53 games five goals 15 assists Nick Dowd 29 years of age picked up from Vancouver had a decent year last year 64 games his fourth line Center eight goals 14 assists 22 points they've signed Brandon Leipzig he's been added he's 25 years of age split the year between LA and Vancouver and then 62 games recorded seven goals 16 assists he's a felon he'll leave you wanting a little bit offensively that's kind of his MO but he can have his streaks as well so that's seven goals added there with Leipzig along with 11 so 1832 with Hathaway and they lost 34 between Barofsky and Connelly so if you're doing this as I've got to replace goals with goals they've done that you could argue they'll get more goals out of this group potentially than they got because they have three players rather than two so we'll see Chandler Stephenson who's still a free agent currently five goals six assists for him we'll see what arbitration does for him he's not gonna get a huge raise five goals six assists but again if the team and the player can't agree they go to arbitration on the blue line you've got John Carlson 29 years of age when we get into the age part of things it's it definitely affects forwards more than defenseman defenseman they seem to be built to play longer careers for the most part 20 26 is how long he has signed until 13 goals of 57 assists for 70 points in 80 games and Capitals fans will tell you he's underrated even though he gets Norris votes and Norris consideration people will still tell you he's underrated and he should have won a Norris Trophy by now I can't argue against that either Demetrio of 27 years of age signed through 2023 three goals 26 assists 29 points in 80 games I've been critical of Orlov at points I know there's others who have as well I I do think that when you look at the blue line that the Capitals have there are some concerns there I can understand why they move niskin and/or picks retirement may kind of cause some concerns as well but I can kind of understand moving niskin and even though with Goudas who's 29 years of age he's got one year left on his contract that may be part of the reason why the contract why this happened goodness don't have to pay for one year and then they've got some financial flexibility that I think niskin and has more years left than one Goethe 77 games as mentioned four goals 16 assists last year for the Flyers Kemp knee cam knees key and you wouldn't have thought that at the time that they acquired him but he's key and him being hurt absolutely hurt them last year 71 games played six goals 19 assists 25 points and you really know the difference on the Capitals blue line when camped he's not out there Nick Jensen course came over from Detroit 28 years of age 20 games played as a capital had five assists in those 20 games was not brought in to score points so that's not really a problem yonis Seigenthaler 22 years of age played 26 games for assists at age 22 this is the time if he's gonna get a regular job he'll step up now and again with our pick and niskin and both gone there's an opening for one more blue liner Christian juice my favorite name in the NHL it's up there anyways 45 games played 1 gold 9 assists for Christian juice and he's at 24 years of age again you're looking at a time to become a regular now is the time so juice and Seigenthaler it looks like we'll fight it out for that last spot but I've got on the board because I don't want to overlook them Lucas Johansson who struggled with injuries this past season which is I think part of the reason why he didn't didn't end up getting any kind of a call-up first-round draft pick and and I like the kid and I'm hoping he gets called up at some point this year if Johansen can take that next step and step in on this blue line and play a top role top six just top six that could go a long way the blue line is the one thing with the Capitals that makes me nervous overall that forward group is it a little older a little grayer yes but it's still an elite forward group that can put in a lot of goals you have one two three four five six twenty goal scorers and I would argue ponic could become number seven and then on the blue line you've got Carlson and then offensively there's there's a huge gap from 70 points for Carlson to 29 for Orlov they don't really have that offensive catalyst maybe if Johansen takes that next step like they need somebody so it doesn't it's not just Carlson um goaltending Braden Holtby and this is the big one he's 29 years of age but his contracts up next season and he made sickies making 6.1 million this year which we can all agree as a bargain he won't be a bargain the year after he could ask for 10 million and he could get it he had a record this year of 30 to 19 five the safe percentage of 911 which is low comparatively speaking to his Vesna years and I think he would admit he had an off year this year comparatively speaking with the year before stealing cup and all that wonderful stuff but of course the year before he also ended up a back up going into the playoffs Gruber was the starter and then they had to give him the job when Gruber our losses those first couple of games and then hope he went on a huge run that made us forget all about how he had struggles during the regular season and of course Phoenix Copley 27 years of age really came out of nowhere I didn't expect him to be their backup this year at all sixteen seven and three with the 905 state percentage he's a capable backup but look out for Samsonov samsonov had an 898 save percentage with Hershey this year is Sampson off going to be ready next year to do the to the Washington Capitals next summer do something crazy and not end up bringing back hope P and say you know what we're gonna do this and Sampson off comes in and then if hope he leaves does that signal that they're ready to start potentially some sort of a rebuild at some point so the point is that I'm getting to is this you've got hope II that's up this year and Backstrom they're both gonna get raises if they stay if they get big raises the potential for for the salary cap to remain kind of flat and by kind of flat I mean it only goes up by two million dollars rather than you know these orbited amounts that it was expected to if that happens we may be looking a situation where this is the best that's gonna get where the Capitals moving forward after this coming season may not get a shot at another cup there will be motivation on this team to to get back to where they were in 2018 there wasn't there this past season not only that but but rather than just throw them under the bus and motivation there's also just the the bumps and bruises they went through in the 2018 playoffs that may not have been fully healed when the 2019 season started so you know October of 2018 you've won the Cup in June you might still be kind of banged up and it's hard to mentally get back into it Pittsburgh Penguins went through that as well with their Stanley Cup championships where sometimes it's hard to get back into it Stanley Cup hangover is a thing so they won't have that working again from this year I like the additions I think ponics a good addition Judas potentially a good addition physicality in that top four if he plays top four if he doesn't end up getting bumped down to five right because Carlson Orlov can't me and I could see Jensen being in there and and this blue line again I'm that's my one concern hope be in the playoffs proved he can be the guy Ovechkin has proven he could be a superstar in the playoffs there's a really solid top six here a top six that can beat almost anybody in the NHL the question for me is that blue line so the overall reason for this video the overall question this video asks is can this roster as it's currently constituted win the 2020 Stanley Cup for people who've watched the the video where I try to predict who's gonna win the 2020 Stanley Cup they're my pick I I do think that they're a team that can have that come back and the the motivation to win it again but let me know in your opinion in the comment section below where you think this team has a weakness where they they have a strength what their chances are and who I don't have on the board that you think could be a key guy for the caps I looked at their prospects list and I don't see anybody else being close that can be a key guy for them but again there could be some surprises let me know what you guys think in the comment section below as always don't forget to hit like and subscribe if you're browsing away three just happen upon this video and hey it's just a look at the Capitals and a excuse for me to throw on the Jersey now that it's got the patch on it and there's more Stanley Cup final patches coming because I think they're fun to throw on jerseys and know that my collections as full as I think it can get it's pretty darn close now it's a matter of collecting patches to throw on those jerseys just to give them that little bit extra spice let me know your thoughts hit like and subscribe I'll talk to you again soon

it makes me think about penguins lost players after they won the cup and then came back with a new coach and roster couple years later and won again. I can see the same thing happening with the capitals

If they acquire Spurgeon at the deadline, they're my pick to win, until they add one more top 4 guy, it's Tampa's cup to lose.

Sound analysis Shannon.. I do however have a different thought on the D core.. There are quite a few D prospects that I'm excited about including Alexeyev and Fehervary.. By all accounts both are very close to being pro ready..

I think they could, but if it’s a rematch of 2018 in the finals. I think Vegas would take it because of the revenge aspect.

I don't believe the Caps can win it all with this roster. When will Lars Eller go to the KHL? He'd be a more effective player there (not trying to take away from his NHL accomplishments, but…just saying).

Way too many 28-30+ forward players, Most of these forwards run the risk of having their hands age anytime now. Only 7 players on the roster that wont turn 28+ during this upcoming season. Which puts it to what 14 players around the 30's only thing these guys will be fighting for is oldest team in the league after trading away younger developing players lol.

I disagree. First, great video as always. But here's something that I think looking at things completely analytically overlooks:
The relationships made within the team.
If you think about it, a lot of players want to come to play for the Caps. I believe the locker room is one of the best/strongest in the entire league. Players like Backstorm or Holtby who have only ever played for the caps, will probably look at their options at other teams and think to themselves, at their age, why go some where completely new and be uncomfortable?
I think the two will probably take a pay and stay within the caps organization.
The concern is the young core + blue line.

Caps does have a monster point scoring team. But will they have that tight defense? I agree that they could take it all. I actually thought they would have made it further last season.

Amazing video as always. As a caps fan I always forget how much everyone hates Wilson. I don't see any reason the caps shouldn't win their 5th straight metro division and go in to the playoffs looking like a team that could win the cup again. We really miss it. However I'm going to contradict my self our team is ageing and our division is improving my biggest fear is the caps my not have as much taller as their used to just beacuse they have ovi backy and kuzy.

Can you do a video about ovechkin's chances of braking the record for career goals.

I think most of us that love hockey root for Alex Ovechkin. He's just one of those guys that makes the game as fantastic as it is. I was stoked that he won it last year, and would love to see him win another. Last season it seemed like casual hockey fans were rooting for the Knights because they liked the storybook nature of it, but most of us long-time hockey fans were rooting for Ovi. Year after year secondary scoring let him down, and while he showed up in the playoffs, never had a good run, until they did. And it was spectacular. Additionally, those that wanted the storybook run got it this year in the Blues! What a game hockey is.

This team, like every season for the last 4 seasons, has the squad and skill to win it all. 100%. The only thing is whether they can maintain the momentum and intensity you need to win. It has always been their issue, whether they can find that extra edge and desire in the playoffs to win. They did it in 2018, couldn't repeat in 2019, so we will see.

That blueline presents more questions than it answers. Having Gudas and Kempny in the top 4 doesn't exactly scream "strong defensive core." The defense core kind of almost looks dangerously thin and doesn't seem deep enough to handle a physical playoff series.

Oh and kuznetsov is the biggest key to the capitals success. If he plays on that super star level then caps are literally the scariest team but if he plays like last year where he’s unmotivated & inconsistent then ehhh idk

people will go back to doubting the Caps but that’s a mistake bc we saw what happened last time people did. This teams getting a long offseason rest & they’re gonna be a whole lot better than last year where they were tired and banged up.

They can win in 2020 especially if one of their multitude of defensive prospects makes a huge leap. They could be the team to beat this year especially since holtby will play his mind out to get a bobrovsky contract

Go Caps! Though a lot of teams around em seem to be better (New Jersey, New York etc) so yeah, tough division. But I think having it too easy in the regular season actually hurts come play off time so it may help if it's more competitive. Don't know, can't wait to find out!

Shannon, I've watched your channel over the past 3+ years, and this video is one of my all-time favorites. Love the jersey with the Stanley Cup Finals patch. I enjoy the Caps' role of underdog as it's suited us well in past playoff series. Now that Orpik has retired, Carlson should be awarded as Alternate Captain, the best defensemen in team history behind Langway in my opinion. If Oshie can stay healthy in the playoffs, and if Tom continues to play smart hockey and remain out of the penalty box, then in theory, the sky is the limit and a second Cup in three years is certainly possible (2 Cups in 3 years constitutes a dynasty, correct)? I also noticed that this video at the time of my comment has received a total of 560 likes and 5 dislikes (99.1% overall likeability rating). Those 5 people who disliked this video must be bandwagon Vegas or Penguins fans. I love underdogs and home run heroes. Chokers no more. Forever Stanley Cup Champions. Thankfully, the popular vote does not count. #StanleyCaps #ALLCAPS #RockTheRed

I think their D now is arguably deeper than it was when they won the cup. Djoos, orpik, and Niskanen all were playing every night then.

The Caps can do it if they stay healthy. Wouldn’t be surprised if they make some crazy trade if things aren’t looking good by the deadline. They have multiple forwards and D rookies that will see NHL games, it will help their depth even more if some of them show they can be the guy.

Caps fan here. This is Holtby's last season in Washington. If the caps crater, he'll be traded at the deadline. If the caps do well, they'll keep him for the playoffs. Once the offseason begins, regardless of how the caps perform in the playoffs, he'll command at least as much as Bob on the open market (likely a little more). The caps wouldn't resign him at that point because they don't have the cap space to give him 4M more and he would be given a no-movement clause. Once that happens, the caps would have to expose Samsonov in the expansion draft, and I have a hard time seeing Seatle passing there. The only x-factor is Samsonov's performance. If he performs terribly the caps will re-sign Holtby. If Samsonov (or Vanecek) show some promise, Holtby will be gone, regardless of how the season goes.
