This activity is called the Task
Trampoline time management and staying focused on coursework tends to be a
problem among online students this activity will demonstrate how well we as
online students can bounce between coursework and other life tasks let’s
find out how good you are on the task trampoline where you bounce between
tasks such as schoolwork and other tasks performed on a daily basis many are
under the impression they can bounce between activities and it does not
affect their work productivity however attempting this is similar to
jumping on a trampoline or you may feel like you’re moving along while in
reality you are still in the same place let’s take a look at a few clues that
will help us determine if you spend time on the task trampoline do you have
multiple tabs open on your web browser at the same time if so you may be
spending some time on the task trampoline is your phone beside your
computer most of the time if so you may be spending some time on the task
trampoline are you working on an assignment with a friend or a family
member in the same room those friendly folks can be distracting and again you
may be spending some time on the task trampoline is your TV on at the same
time you’re working on an assignment are you binge watching a series on Netflix
while working on an assignment now let’s complete an activity to provide an
example of how bouncing between tasks or assignments can affect your productivity
to complete this activity you will need a sheet of paper a pencil or a pen you
need these supplies now so pause the video until you have them take your pen
or pencil and draw a horizontal line across the center of the paper on both
sides now you’re going to follow the directions on the next screen and be
sure to only start when the directions specifically ask you to the first part
of this task is to write a simple sentence and then count backwards from
20 to again make sure your sheet of paper has a horizontal line from margin
to margin first you will write I can bounce between tasks on the top of the
horizontal line next you will write below the horizontal line and count
backwards from 22 once you’re prompted to begin you will have 30 seconds to
write the text on the top of the line and then count backwards from 20 to
below the line at the end of 30 seconds you will count how many characters you
have written and how many numbers you have written add these two numbers and
write that number at the top corner of your paper there are a maximum of 44
characters that can be written are you ready start now 20 seconds remaining ten seconds remaining I four three two one and stop put your
pencils down count to see how many characters and numbers you were able to
write in part one write that number at the top corner of your paper now turn
your paper over and draw another horizontal line now we’re going to spend
some time on the task trampoline where we bounce between two different
activities again you will need a horizontal line at the center of your
paper however this time you’re going to bounce between I can bounce between
tasks and counting backwards from 22 for example you will write I and then 20 to
see and then 21 a and then 20 and so on at the end of the 30 second exercise you
will also count how many characters and numbers you were able to write in part
one you will once again write down the number and then we will make a
comparison are you ready start now 20 seconds remaining you ten seconds remaining five four three two one stop put your
pencils down count to see how many characters and numbers you were able to
write now that you’ve completed part 1 and part 2 of bouncing between tasks
let’s take a little time to reflect were you able to complete part 2 if so did it
take you longer compared your handwriting in part 1 – Part 2 do you
see a difference in quality did your anxiety increase in part 2 compared to
part 1 take a moment and reflect on how this applies to your academic studies when you’re trying to simultaneously
complete classwork watch TV have your phone nearby or family members nearby
would it take you longer with the quality of your coursework decrease do
you feel a sense of anxiety when trying to complete your coursework and life
tasks at the same time reflect on this activity ask yourself what can I do to
stay off the task a trampoline so I can focus on my online course and classwork
what strategies can I use to help manage my time so I can be more efficient with
my time do I need to have a conversation with my family to let them know I need a
designated quiet time for my coursework after reflecting on these questions
implement a time management strategy to make efficient use of your time and
increase the quality of your work this will also reduce the amount of time and
stress it takes to complete the work always remember to avoid the task a
