I started more or less
at 85. my brother started surfing, suddenly I saw
all this surfing magazines at the house I got my first board during the 85 christmas
finishing sixth grade it’s kind of funny to me if I think about it now… almost 30 years doing the same thing: SKATEBOARDING I don’t feel like 30 years riding, it feels like 10 at least… Obviously there was no Internet, no
cell phones, there was nothing, you know the only way to communicate was by
phone, line phones, you know and you had to know everybody’s number I knew them all, I was super good for phone numbers during the week we set the place where we
were going to meet “look tomorrow we’ll meet at the park in Curridabat” all the sessions always began there.. the alley in Sabana, was another spot at the time
where We got together for a session if you couldn’t make it in the morning
you were fucked You lost the caravan because it was like a caravan we didn’t take a bus, a taxi
all we do was ride our boards from spot to spot I have always said it. Skate here it’s like surfing the wave it’s alive and it moves skateboarding here it’s just like that
the floor it’s alive and it moves one hit, fall, make mistakes You have to pay to play, it’s part of the game You skate a spot one day dodge urine and cracks on the floor,
security guards and who knows what else… everything to skate the spot,
the following week you go there and its perfect 22 days later is completely different… you have to skate it different that’s why I say, or it looks to me the street moves here, it’s alive
it’s harder to skate I don’t know, it helps young people always bring that energy
we lack sometimes as we get older and that recharge you…
it makes me feel super great… that thirst to learn, to do.
they have no fear… They charge my batteries…
I like to watch them skate one is more cautious! I don’t know where I read it..
somebody said it… any skater goes far away from home day by day… you’re getting out of your comfort zone,
but it’s so true That’s the way I did it
first in my room learning how to ollie or at the patio, then at the garage, then the sidewalk then on the sidewalks of the
neighborhood around the block then at the city park, then another province, another country it can take you, well it has taken me …
it still taking me to a lot of places, so and it’s just like that if you skate, you’re always far away from home… it’s the tendency, I don’t understand people
who skates the same place all the time I can’t… I’m going through a tough phase
right now we’ve gone out early, I’ve slept well
and I just can’t land anything I’ts tough, you feel like you’re
not doing anything, you know? The videos I’ve made, normally the ones
that are just one trick, it takes just a day you went to a good spot and
landed something nice but the majority of videos I’ve made
have practically taken a year everything takes time too
if you want to make a good video You can do it, but it takes time…. Obviously if you don’t take care
of yourself, later you’ll pay.. I spent december drinking, every day, doing drugs and… Eating garbage, all that
affects you when you skate… I decided to stop working at Nasional I fuck it up
I did stupid things… Nasional was like my home…. I would come through, put some coffee on in
the morning and nobody would say nothing very mellow job, super cool… All that stuff, at some other job
they’d never let you get away with…. There are things you miss,
everything’s harder now…. Doing what one loves and earn a living. it’s everybody’s dream people says, “if you want to succeed in life ..” I’ve seen some shit like that TEDEX and all that shit telling you: “if you
want to succeed in life… you have to do what you LOVE…
is it true? I mean is… I love skateboarding and I can devote the rest of my life to it. But its not going to give me back anything. an economic future unless
I’ll have something else a shop, a company. or working jobs you know… The devil rides a skateboard too.
the enemy rides on a skateboard as well. We can’t be naive thinking we’re all the same because we skate and we fight against others. NO!! Other skaters also wants to hurt us. I’m a little disappointed right now, I don’t think You can tear the system apart from the inside… you have to be out to brake it… take advantage of the system the same way the bastards take advantage of you take advantage of such mechanism, these clauses and spaces to SKATE them… There are other ways to get out, but Skateboarding was my way out….. Our court is on the streets… Many people make a living off skateboarding,
companies take advantage of that… So either way, the system can
teach you to love skateboarding… I really don’t feel
there is a future in this. It’s not a…. logical choice, something a person
will choose rationally… thinking about your future… your life…. I feel there are like a 1000 people on a skateboard.. but at the same time there are less SKATERS… a lot of people thinking only about sponsors… just to look cool, being famous on social networks… living for a “like”… but it’s really about doing it yourself… don’t expect anything from anybody… Skateboarding will always be antisocial… Skateboarding goes beyond riding your board… is a lot more than that…. it’s a culture you don’t have to be the best or the worst.. you can’t go out thinking: “I’am going pro”, NO, NO…. you have to go out and say to yourself: “I’m going to enjoy this very moment” My scape to the system was skateboarding and listening to Music…. playing the guitar during the school brakes.. after school I grabed my board to go skate with Juan Diego… I don’t expect to get a lot of money from a gig.. so I can spend it the next day on the most expensive instrument in the store… I go to a show to have a good time
playing music with my friends that’s what I love a street guy can wears a 3 piece suit… or you can point at a guy and say: “look at that ganster” but can end up being a coward… and a guy with a 3 piece suit can kill you… you know… You have to be ready all the time in the streets… to go to La Paz we had to walk from San Jose… I had a couple of friends: Herson and Uriel.. We met at the gigs… after the skate session at LAPAZ we were hungry but broke to buy food… Herson and Uriel told me one day: “We’re going to eat man…” How? if we don’t have any money? “you’ll see, just wait here…” they said.. “Man I am so hungry”…This guy said to me… “Fuck man I am broke….” “I barely have for my fix…” “Why don’t you go ask for food to the place you got it the other day…” “Where? are you crazy? I am shamed” the restaurant takes out the food they couldn’t sell… because it got cold… if you knew about it..you knew it was good food that happens to be cold… “Excuse me, How long have you being living in the streets?” So We were there on time to eat like kings… you know: Punk Rock Style… you had to dig deep in the bag… trashy food, for free, who cares… “You’re just at the begining, getting out of the shell…” the guy said to me “”an advice from a man with 45 years a a homeless,
I don’t remember anything about my youth” he replied…. “the day you loose that shame… you’ll never leave the streets…” “if you loose it, you wouldn’t care about anything…” “you wouldn’t care about friends, relatives watching you in the streets…” “You’ll do anything… people can smile at you and then stab you in the back..” to live and walk the streets you need to know a lot… the street it’s another world.. in the streets you’re all ALONE…
